Well-Actually War Trall Spidweb
We have put up the first screenshots and official info for Geneforge 5: Overthrow. It's here. The world is about half done, and the beta testing will begin in mid-July. As you can see from the screenshots, a lot has changed. The play area now takes up the whole screen, which makes even old, musty graphics look a lot nicer. I've been able to add a lot of little graphical frills to make things look a little more professional. As I've said before, you can play in a window or play the game in any monitor size. I've been redoing a lot of the graphics. Almost all of the walls. A lot of the floors. Many of the terrain types. I've been quite happy with the results. I am starting to rethink the second tier creations. I will probably bring back some of the older creations that some people miss (like the rotdhizon). I have made melee creations generally tougher and far cheaper in essence. I think they have a role to play as cheaper, more disposable zerg-type creatures. The system for buffing has been completely reworked. Buffs are more powerful, but you can have fewer of them on at one time. You will have to think more to choose what set of buffs will be helpful for a given situation. Haste and slow have weaker effects, so they are no longer the all-powerful makers and breakers they were. I'll add more as I remember it. For now, it's nice to finally have the public announcement out of the way. - Jeff Vogel
Burgeoning Battle Gamma Janitorial Closet
Hooray! More info! Go Jeff! And I think I know what the new class looks like. Unless you changed everything. XD
Unflappable Drayk Evnissyen
Yeah... as I've said before she looks like some sort of assassin. Being able to float, I feel free to assume, is a benefit if you want to be able to sneak around unheard. If this is the character with strong magic, moderate shaping and weak battle skills, then I suppose this is the character I'll be playing at first go. I still love the floating. I also still love the new, refined graphics... although I still say that all that black is just a little too much black.
Easygoing Eyebeast Goldengirl
Some people always complain... Perhaps she (he?) is not floating, but instead her (his?) shoes blend in. They kind of already look like socks.
Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
Thanks Jeff for the news. It almost wants me to go out and get a 24" Mac instead of this little 14" iBook. I can't wait to beta test. I really want to see that cut scene where the Shaper Council questions a rebel servile by absorbing the essence from his limbs. Garrulous Glaahk Gandalf the Purple
We get rotdizhons back!?! Thank you, your Jeffness.
Burgeoning Battle Gamma emulrooney
Is there any chance of darker shadows underneath the characters? They're there, but they're so faint you can hardly see them. I'm really loving the new UI. Really, this is a lot better than before. I just hope you'll replace that scrollbar on the textbox; I think we've had that exact same one since the first Geneforge and it kind of doesn't fit with the color scheme. Understated Ur-Drakon Sudanna
So we shall secrete it in the form of noxious fluids Thank you for our old tier-2 creations. Ah, we have a new title. Tasty. Nalyd likes the new UI, including all the black. Can't go wrong with black. Good to see that buffs no longer make the world go round. Also, your generosity in the making of graphics is much appreciated.
Unflappable Drayk Xelgion
Yay! Black is good, SM, MS, WB is good! Solution to big fight: Buff. Solution to Titan: Buff and Slow. But now we can rejoice!

Having a widescreen monitor myself, I am also curious to know if there will still be black spaces on the sides or not. Edit: I assume not, since there is no frame interface, it should be able to be any size or shape your monitor is.
Kyshakk Koan tridash
I'm pretty sure Jeff said in the last thread that it takes up the whole screen.
Easygoing Eyebeast Xaiya
*sigh* Things like this is what makes me sad for a few seconds that I have a windows. I know this is going to be great! Also, lots of replay value! Say...where is this going to take place? Mind showing us the world map in a screen shot?

Hatchling Cockatrice Mea Tulpa
Huzzah! The new buffs system sounds like a great idea. And weaker haste is excellent.
Burgeoning Battle Gamma Janitorial Closet
With having the game take up the entire screen, I hope there is an option in the preferences menu to speed up cursor movement, like G1.

Garrulous Glaahk Brock The Archmage
i increased my resolution then zoomed WAY in on the picture, it definitely has a mask and is floating. some kind of special forces elite or something. As to whether that is the +magic/-melee character or not, who knows?
Unflappable Drayk Sleeping Dragon
I'm pretty sure the character's feet are just the same color as the floor. Jeff might want to remedy that... unless they really are supposed to be floating... you never know.

Curious Artila Dreadful Realm of Dynasty
Truely, I cannot wait for Geneforge 5 to come out... ...Not because of the new classes or the ending of the story. But because of the ~interface~. It looks more like a MMORPG than anything else (action bar, etc) and I'm a gamer, so I would love to try that kinda user interface. Sadly I'm gonna have to wait a lot, because I don't own a Mac. ~DRoD

Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
Jeff means that you have a choice of Rebel or Shaper sides not characters. There are 5 factions running from one exteme to another.
Hatchling Cockatrice Mea Tulpa
I'm pretty sure Jeff did say that you would be able to choose any of the 8 classes previously offered (that counts the three pairs of quantitatively identical classes) in addition to the one missing class.
Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
I've seen the beta and there are only 6 starting classes shown, but that could change. It looks like it will be massive since the early text indicates several different parts of the continent will be visited.
Magnificent Ornk Student of Trinity
Jeff has said that there will be nine classes possible: the three Shaper ones, the five from G4, plus the 'missing' sixth rebel class that was left out of G4. I, um, believe that Jeff will keep his word.
Garrulous Glaahk Brock The Archmage
speaking of betas, is there any way one could become involved in beta testing, or at least see what the it look like atm?
Understated Ur-Drakon Nioca
He usually sends out an open beta call for the public to participate.
Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
Jeff will make a request for additional beta testers for Mac version in another month or so. Windows testers will be in January. So watch What's New and GF4 forum for news. Jeff has released some screenshots at GF5 official game page. Edit- My mistake, I missed the button that allows you to start as a shaper group character.

Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
Jeff hasn't requested extra beta testers, yet. Of course except for the rare occasions where Jeff requests a specific computer and/or operating system version, no one knows what he looks for in an applicant. Unflappable Drayk Evnissyen
I think I'd like to start the game as a peace-corp volunteer. Then work my way up to freak rebel with glowing flesh. Anyhow... Evelyn is clearly floating. While it's true that in her inventory image she has feet: the circle is simply too far below the hem of her cloak, so that if she's not floating then she clearly has freakishly long, transparent legs that are apparently retractable whenever she gets her picture taken for inventory purposes. Of course, anyone who's watched the whole Monty Python series knows that Chopin's legs could be jettisoned at will... so I suppose that neither floating nor retractable or elongatable legs are out of the question. Adding on to that if you zoom way in that she has no legs or feet at all, they might be crunched up, but they simply arn't there.
Understated Ur-Drakon Sudanna
Actually, they're more or less the EXACT same color as the floor, with no outline. Check the position of her feet in the roster to the side, and then look in the same spot on the floor. There should be a barely noticeable smudge of slightly off gray there.
Rotghroth Rhapsody Uberdhizon
And what does the color of what's his face's feet have to do with anything?
Unflappable Drayk Evnissyen
Then the patterned tiles are apparently overlapping said feet. Either that or, as I said, the legs and feet are freakishly long and have chameleon ability.
Understated Ur-Drakon Sudanna
Ur-Drakon. . . We're discussing why the feet are invisible. Evelyn is wearing a long robe leaving only the feet exposed, and they're the exact same gray as the floor.
Chittering Clawbug Fringy MacGee
I agree, she does have legs. and very stylish grey socks. Oh man, this is a ridiculous discussion.
