Easygoing Eyebeast Goldengirl
Political Compass time! I don't know when that time is. I usually just post it when it feels like it's been a while since someone else posted it. For those who are unfamiliar, this is a short and simple political quiz that does its best to quantify where your political ideology is in terms of economics on one axis and social issues on the other. It's not decisive, and it has its short comings. In general though, I think it's a good way to find your political ideological neighbors, relatively speaking. My results: Economic Left/Right: -0.88 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -8.36 I'll leave it to the more archive-minded Spiderwebbers to dig up past results to this test so we can see how some of the community members have shifted over time. What I will say is that my economics have definitely moderated; I used to be way more left. I attribute this to my collegiate studies in economics, where I've learned more of the empirics and the mathematically-based principles that are simply true, in that they hold to ideology. I still have a lot of problems with capitalism in its current iteration, but I think that any alternative system still needs to play by essentially capitalistic principles to operate effectively. Well-Actually War Trall A less presumptuous name.
I'm not sure what my results have been in the past, but I feel like I'm still in the same quadrant. Also, I feel like many of my answers should be taken with a grain of salt - tests that have agree/disagree scales for absolute statements tend to leave me wanting to debate the finer points of many issues. Hatchling Cockatrice Lilith
i'm not a big fan of this test tbh but sure why not -8.25 / -7.74 is anyone really surprised by this result

Unflappable Drayk Edgwyn
After taking it, I have severe doubts about its calibration. I ended up with Economic -.88 which I just can't see and libertarian/Authoritarian of .10 which I can see. I also feel that there were not enough options for the answers and not enough questions to really cover the fine points of my personal beliefs. Magnificent Ornk Dikiyoba
I don't know when that time is. It's typically once a month. Anyway... Easygoing Eyebeast Goldengirl
With the onslaught of the typical demographic polls and surveys coming out, it's time for a return of the Political Compass that circulates through the boards every now and then. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Political Compass, it is a very short and simple test that plots your political opinions on economics versus social positions. Economic Left/Right: -4.50 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -7.13 Someone will dig out the old community charts that show how people have changed over time, mapping current scores against older ones. I've forgotten mine, but I know I've definitely moved further to the right economically. Actually taking economics classes made me take many of the more philosophical positions I hold and replace them with ones that abandon ideological purity for actual functionality. Comparing this old post from when I started this thread (hmm) to the current one is somewhat unsettling.

Unflappable Drayk Edgwyn
I believe a key question that was left out of the Libertarian/Authoritarian track that might have effected some results is the ownership of fire arms. I would not be surprised if several of the folks who scored more towards social libertarian than I did (which so far is everyone) would move a step towards authoritarian if that question had been asked whereas I would have crossed into the libertarian side. Understated Ur-Drakon Callie
Yeah, it's a little odd to me that a political compass lacks a question about gun control. Gun control is probably more relevant to one's political ideology than abstract art or astrology.
Rotghroth Rhapsody BJ Back From the Beyond
Economic: 1.25 Social: -2.00 I have to admit, I found a lot of the questions rather peculiar. On several of them, I wish there was a button labeled "Yes and No, for varying reasons," and on others I wish there was a button for "Huh? Please elaborate." My score should probably be taken with a small grain of salt, but it does still make sense to me. Free will is a pretty important part of Christianity, so me being on the Libertarian side of social issues isn't too surprising. As for economic issues, I've always felt capitalism made more sense than communism, so no big surprise there either. ĐªгŦĦ Єяŋϊε

Garrulous Glaahk Mistah Q
Economic Left/Right: 4.88 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -0.10 I don't know about that. Some of the questions seemed loaded - some in each direction. And the trouble with this kind of test is that the results leave no room for interpretation of nuance. Economically that's probably about right for me, but what that doesn't tell you is how I'm for tariffs... not protectionism but certainly appropriate tariffs, and how regulations should follow but not until we have the leverage to put human rights pressure on our trade partners... and how much I loathe Nixon. Socially I'm about as far left as you can get... except for maybe one or two issues. So I always get pegged as a centrist instead of a radical lol. If I were self-grading I'd probably give myself a -8 but with an asterisk, instead of -0.1 ĐªгŦĦ Єяŋϊε
Hatchling Cockatrice Alorael at Large
That's possible, but there's a rather large difference between -0.1 and -8. I think there may be more room to the left of you than you're aware of. The political compass test isn't perfect by any means, but it does mean something. —Alorael, who can't be bothered to retake it yet again. He's usually been around -8, -6, and imagines he hasn't moved much. Say ±1 on both of those. That's a good couple of minutes saved.

My perennial complaint is that I just don't understand what things like not thinking about sadness, or whatever that specific question was, have to do with anything political. Is it authoritarian to never think of how sad I may or may not be? I don't know, because I try to not think about things like that.

Is it authoritarian to never think of how sad I may or may not be? I don't know, because I try to not think about things like that. they did write an explanation for that at some point. it was along the lines of authoritarian people being less likely to dwell on potentially socially disruptive thoughts like whether things are really as good as they could be. i'm not saying it's a good explanation but it's what they wrote
