  1. If somehow guns became obsolete, I'd join the army/military and brandish my sword for many battles. It would be awesome. I'd even do it for no pay, and would pay 1 dollar to the American Military for every slain warrior. Plus I could keep in shape.
  2. To be completely fair, I'm sure this is a thing that is very much why the 2nd trilogy is that way. Its extremely linear, there are many mini-bosses that can shred through your characters no matter how godly your stats are (Well unless you went divine touched). I mean that's how the whole 2nd trilogy is, its very much like Icewind Dale series-that is brutal. Not that the original trilogy isn't, but you at least get a chance to lvl up much moreso than usually can. The best thing to do is get parry to 10 for fighters and from there boost your offense through quick action or weapon skill. Parry is an offense too as by missing getting hit makes them on the defense as you get more attacks off.
  3. Thank you very much Lilith. I was waiting for someone to confirm that it will work. Im almost finished with Geneforge 1 (this time is easy as I know mechanics of game). It seems that as long as you have 1 tank and 1 bombardier in party, you can complete jeff's games on regular difficulties. So far its proven true-Geneforge, and now Avernum. Pure awesome.
  4. Ive exhausted my time on Avernum The Pit. I just finished a 2 man party in said game with 1 tank that had parry so high, he was nearly ever hit. With him I brought a priest who blasted enemies, hasted/blessed him and what not. It was a good team as the fighter always had someone to hit and took down enemies that were AOE'd by priest. Good times.. It seems that the Avernum series doesn't really matter whether you take a 2, 3 or even 4 man party as it seems that you just get extra exp. I thought of using a tank fighter with parry and a hedge wizard like in Avernum The Pit. I have 2 questions- 1-Does Avernum 5 have a 10 cap for stats such as parry. I want to place enough points for it to be useful but don't want to waste any. Im asking because I currently am almost finished with Geneforge 1 (which does have a 10 cap). I found the thread on Avernum 4 10 cap but cant find one for this game. 2-If I completed Avernum-The Pit with a 2 person party, is Avernum second trilogy possible with setup? I really liked the current setup but don't know if it will work. My idea is to have at least 1 character that can fight and another character that can blast fairly well (hasted) and heal and what not as well.

    Geneforge MV

Who ever thought that Greenday mixed with Geneforge would equal one of the coolest things around. If I ever meet Billy Joe, I'm showing him that video
  6. Im all ears good sir! But really the only fantasies I saw that I thought incorporated 'good' magic/spellcasting were Merlin (british fantasy series), Legend of the Seeker and that's it really. Im looking for a good party based fantasy series where this kind of stuff happens a lot more. The problem is its either really really old and still ok, or just not done well. I thought Spartacus did warriors well but it was wWAYYY!!! too violent for my taste. I don't mind gore but some of the stuff happening in there I may never forget. You cant pay me to watch a women get taken advantage of, its just too sick. And they even show everything too. If you or anyone else know of any good tv series or shows with fantasy in it (other than lotr), I'm all ears. Edit- Yeah I agree to that
  7. I agree with everything you said, to a degree. I still don't agree with both being about equal. Swords and melee weapons are historically more deadly in medieval times because the speed that comes with the thrust and slash. If you just stab someone with a short sword in the side, as soon as you pull it out the pain is still magnified. Whereas with an arrow, the wound is much smaller and they can usually pull it out. Of course if you hit someone in a critical area, they are still destroyed regardless of weapon but hits to a arm, shoulder, side or leg are magnified depending weapon. Also blades go through full platemail much better than arrows in my opinion. I guess there's really know way of being wrong or right as both have their own pluses and minuses. I will say this-I read that a strong hit from a mace against plate armor can cause vibrations that shatter bones so maybe maces are better with that than both. The reason melee always appeals more to me is that there are always so many different types of it and everyone does it different. You could wield a sword and see someone exactly the same sword and skill that wields/uses tactics completely different. Arrows appeal to me too but to a lesser degree although still a large amount of skilled users. Mages/spellcasters don't appeal to me at all as there really aren't many types of them out there. Like you said melee will win against ranged if you have distance and a good shield/blocking skill, other than that you will get owned unless you can manage to take the hits and shrug them off. Most people cant do that.
  8. And there's varying degrees of how it works. A critical hit slash from a two-handed sword will naturally deal more damage than an arrow. However, a bow and arrow is easier to shoot off. The thing is that most d and d rpg games always make melee more useful than ranged with a few exceptions. I would say its more realistic that ranged weapons are easier to pull off with that, but melee still deals more damage in the long run. The thing is no fight is the same as previous ones unless you are literally forcing it that way. Sometimes someone is on the ground in a grapple and will it be easier to pull off a critical from melee there? Heck no. One of the things that I found made no sense in toee and knights of the chalice was that there are all these feats that you have to get to even attempt ranged combat. When in all common sense does it make sense to have to take a feat where you can shoot at a enemy next to an ally. I know you can miss but its not like everyone is like cheney in that aspect. We took archery in high school and if you honestly were that bad to hit another target I don't know. With guns its even more simplified, point and shoot. Its only complicated with rifles. I think that d and d turn based games are poor in that aspect. Ranged should be stronger in some areas and they really think one beastly guy is going to run through a line of 5 archers without at least getting hit once. Its completely unrealistic.
  9. So yeah the title says it all. Ive come to the realization that any of the characters in the 2 new games-Avernum and Avadon can be competent at dealing massive strikes be it bow or sword from the excellent critical hit system. The thing is you can look at Avadon and see that even the sorceress can snipe with a bow with the right equipment giving her chance to critically hit. Its not plausible but it comes to show a few things-weapon skill damage rolls are good but dexterity stat modifier is much better as you can evade as well as damage. Avernum has it even moreso for archers especially. Why waste more than 10 points in bow weapons or melee weapons when you can just place 3 or 4 points in lethal blow, then train 2 times and you have a reasonable chance to critical. My first characters were terrible because of staying away from lethal blow and then again that is why they are my first characters. Now as soon as I get weapon skill to 10, I focus on other stuff that helps said character. It just makes so much more sense. The thing to make it even better is if jeff adds just 1 trait in the 2nd avernum remake that gives a bonus to it. Once that happens, we'll know what will happen in next game. I think that critical hits owning the house is only plausible even though they don't own ALL the time. Still most of the time is better than sometimes. Its like in d and d when everyone went after scimitars and rapiers not for damage but for critical hit chance.
  10. Redbeard is almost a god when you meet him in the beginning, that doesn't change in the later parts of the game. He even tells the player at one point early on, "To get to be keeper, you have to defeat me-And I PROMISE you, you can't". The guys 100 years old and still running around like a madman. If anything he should be coaching Sarevok and Irenicus on how to be god-like. I defeated Sarevok with a 2 man party of my swashbuckler and a blackguard. If I tried that in Avadon with a 4 person party on torment-Nice knowing ya.
  11. I really cant find any flaws in the game. Its sort of funny how the more I play Avernum, the more I like it a bit more than Avadon. It used to be the opposite.
  12. My guess is that Redbeard wont "die" until late Avadon 3 and likely will be based on your choices or overwhelming odds. I really think that aside from Greta, there hasn't been any other npc/main type character that has had such a big impact on the story in these games. Greta is probably the only really tough/cool character that has made it in 3 games, other than Alwan who is basically changed in the last installment. I really don't know much about Avernum series, so far the only character who is awesome and I cant stop reading dialogue from is Captain Johnson (fort duvno-Ave1). His face turns into a wicked grin-"Vicious vermin, I'd love to strangle every one of them." Such a funny line even though he has such a small part.

    Hold me

Im doin good. I had a pretty bad experience when I watched Aliens at age 9-I threw up all over the place. I watched it again a year ago and I didn't throw up but it still bothered me. Im too emotional with regards to extreme violence and if women or children are getting brutally hurt I have to turn the show off. I just cant handle that kind of stuff for some reason. One of my buddies asked me to watch the movie-"Last house on the left", it was disturbing to say the least. I sometimes don't understand why they need to show all that stuff in a game/movie. The world's violent enough as it is. Also one of the reasons why spiderweb/basilisk/redshift are some of my main favs for game companies. Mature in nature but doesn't actually show any of what is going on-how it should be.
  14. I decided that since I completed this game 3 times with a ranged weapon user, why not go with a melee user. As I know the game fairly well with each boss fight proving not too bad, what should I go for with regards to items? I will most definitely want to play as a blade master that wields swords. 1-Is it unrealistic to place points in dex and endurance then use the strength gems enchanted into equipment? Ive heard that melee users need strength, dex and endurance and not just strength and dex if that is true. 2-Also I figure to move around I'll get that scarab in the beginning smith which enables teleporting like SS. 3-For tactics Im guessing that my warrior won't be the king damage guy that goes after mages but rather the slayer of everything else that comes near the party. Will challenge usually serve the purpose for always giving me something to slice at? Any other tips are most welcome. Oh and Im playing on normal.
  15. Other games would be off the top of my head-Arcanum (solo or party), Wizardry 6-8 with different class exp requirements (although Ive only read up on it-will get 6-8 on gog), TOME (cormac human-outlvls enemies), Divine Divinity (same as tome except a trait). You could even have Eschalon on there as you basically can ignore the main quest, level up 5 lvls higher than the normal endgame lvl and destroy the entire lot of them. Edit-I couldn't have been more wrong. I just read up on Wizardry 6-8 and the game makers are insane. It seems that the time it takes to finish one of those games is anywhere between 180-250 hours as said on howlongtobeat. The time it seems is taken account of by your experience points it takes to get a lvl. 3 million exp points for some characters 1 lvl. That is insane and checks all of wizardry off my list. The makers must be insane to think that someone has that much time. 40-60 hours is enough already, jeez.
  16. Well aside from that, its also pretty clickfesty like diablo. There really aren't any tactics you normally would have access to. Once a battle starts you really cant run away and regroup like some other games. In morrowind even more so-click click click. The reason why I like games like Eschalon is that while it is click click, you can also change the pace of the game whenever you want. If you are in a large battle, you would be almost forced to take your time. The problem I have with almost all the first person rpgs is that the tactics just don't mesh well and usually force the same results time after time. Vampire the Masquerade-Bloodlines is a perfect example-its nothing more than a click fest in melee, guns are useless throughout beginning midgame and controls are terrible. Other than that, has a lot of the good stuff like Elder Scrolls. But again if cant stand the combat system, you'll never make it through midgame. People have recommended System Shock 2 and Deus Ex, Arx Fatalis to me. I ask them the same question-is there any real difference between each game? Ive been offered a beta/qa testing intern at an indie company that is making a vampire first-person rpg like Bloodlines. The game looks cool and it would be interesting, but I doubt I could wade through the whole game as first person rpgs are just not fun to me. They are almost like getting teeth pulled at the dentist. I give anyone credit to get past those games, I find controls are very crucial to making a simple, easy to use game. Spiderweb games have some very minor things like pathfinding, but I could honestly care less as I can figure those games out with little problem. Guess my hat's off to everyone that master controls of games like Gothic 1 and 2. Those games are brutal.
  17. I dislike many things about the elder scrolls series. Here's the things I like first-Its an old school rpg and like Trenton said has 'a few similarities between arg. and Khajits and Avernum.' Other than that, I can't seem to get into the game even though Ive tried and at one time owned both oblivion and morrowind. If I ever was to give it a shot again I would go with morrowind as the direction the game took after that was not favorite. Here's what I don't like-The lvling system is horrible. I really can't seem to figure out why I have to use a skill to put points in it. I much prefer the idea that I want to make a build-I make it. The fact that the game has skills on everything such as athletics is a little problematic. If you played morrowind you know right away that taking athletics as a main skill will ruin your character as you will just lvl that skill up so much to the point where all you get points in that skill/nothing else. For me, I just can't enjoy the game as the lvling system makes everything impossible to. The first time I played morrowind I had a nord who wielded axes. The game wasn't much fun as I had to power game to make the lvling system somewhat work. I ended up with a lvl 15 nord that could kill anything in 1-2 shots with his axe. I couldn't keep on maxing the weapon skills as my strength was cracked to 100. Agility was high too. I didn't like Oblivion any more than morrowind as they took out number of weapons in game.

    Hello

I would go with whatever everyone/poll else has said. Try Geneforge 1 to see if you like it. If you do then I think its only obvious what you should do if you complete it. The gene forge series is by far the most original rpg series I have ever come across. I still to this day, get people who ask me if they've ever seen a roleplaying game that has always been 150% original. Geneforge series is the answer. If however, you don't get into that/not your cup of tea, Avadon is a little bit like Geneforge with some of the aspects of it and is more forgiving. Avadon also in my opinion has some of the best/most memorable characters Ive seen in a rpg. Avernum Escape from the Pit is also another good choice seeing as Exile doesn't work on your comp. Either one you choose, you can't beat the deal your getting when you can play 20% of the game before paying for it.
  19. Das gut, du bist fantastisch! I wish you all the best with this movie. If/when you complete it, I would like to watch it if you don't mind as anything spiderweb/avernum related is cool in my book
  20. I usually like it when games have a way of making it fair to play the game at any rate you can. One of my favorite ways of playing games is when you take a character that is not normally as strong as the others, and you allow said character the ability to gain experience much faster than normally possible. It usually makes the character 'outclass' his allies if in a party based game. So for example, my 2nd play through of Avernum EFTP had my main fighter 2 lvls higher than the rest of my 3 person party. Daxen was his name and he not only had 2 lvls more health but also 2 stat boosts to boot. The reason this is possible is through exp. bonuses and taking a smaller than 4 man party. This works in Baldurs Gate Enhanced Edition as well. I had a swashbuckler (which is a thief class) which normally rises in lvls faster than usual fighters. Although my party member (dorn), a half orc blackguard was strong, at end game, I tested to see who would win in a fight and due to the extra health and more lvls (plus more lvls equal more damage bonus for swash), my character won. This is ridiculously powerful as not only did dorn wield a magical two-handed sword, but also my character only wielded a magical poisonous dagger. Planescape torment is even crazier. With added wisdom bonuses, my thief who was teamed up with morte, had gotten to lvl 25 while morte was only 22. Just pure awesome! I found that those 3 extra lvls were 3 stat points and very needed. I had about equal power as my Baldurs Gate 2 character had, and they were an undead hunter (paladin class!) Fallout I didn't try as swift learner sounds good but really isn't. If you look at the exp you gain, you don't gain extra exp from kills but moreso just from skills which is very lame in my opinion. Still worth try as it might be fun. Icewind Dale doesn't really have a lvl cap so in reality it can be very lethal to try what I did in Bg and PS:T. 'Outclassing" is by far one of my favorite ways of making a character in a roleplaying game. I am hoping that jeff will keep those 2 experience traits in Avernum as I am looking forward to making a 2 man party in the future to see just how many lvls I can gain over my other party members. If anyone knows of any other rpgs that have this, I'd like to know as its fun.
  21. Im definitely going to eventually try Nethergate and hope to complete it. From what I've read, its very very good although didn't sell well. The new way I like to get through the older games is by getting the hint book and that way I am more informed. I used to think it was a weakness to get through any of the games by switching to easy, but now I found a better way. Go through almost all the game on normal and when you hit a rough spot, switch to easy only to switch back to norm after the boss/whatever fight you had trouble with. I did it with Avadon the first time I fought the mindtaker Zhossa and now because of it, I can do it easily on normal. Do many people buy the hintbooks? I think they are very helpful and I would urge jeff to advertise them more on the game's page. So far they have saved me a lot of aggravation in Avernum 5
  22. Randomizer, got a question about the mini boss fights. I noticed that a lot of them are geared towards starting and abandoning only to come back later. I find that works the best as I usually cant do them when right away. I now have the hint books so I guess that is why I don't have as much problems. But my main question is is it SUPPOSED to be hard if you do it right away and am I doing the right thing? Im only asking as I noticed that some of the creatures are naturally tough when you fight them without the right stats/items. But usually when I come back, I always am able to win. I just hope that Im not supposed to be able to get through asap. That would mean I made my party weak, lol.
  23. You are definitely blessed my friend The cool part is when you get to see if she likes Satriani's remake of voodoo child and what not.
  24. Thats a will do and thanks! I always love music because its the one thing other than games where you never can have enough of. I find out about more stuff all the time from movies/what not. Its awesome. Seeing as you recommended something, I have a band if you like grunge. I started listening to a band a while back (6 years) called kings x. They are very interesting and I can't really put a label on them. The singing is very melodic but the riffs on some of their earlier albums (about 5) are very grungish and sound like hard rock. Look up the song-"Dogman". The only thing that annoys me is that they were labeled as christian rock due to their inspirational lyrics and what not. Thats not the problem. What annoyed me is that when the singer came out, they stopped selling them at certain christian stores. It was annoying because they come to jersey a lot when touring and the group of 3 are really just cool guys to talk/hang with. It sucks because the singer and band altogether are some of the most under appreciated bands. I'd really like to meet them once before I go to the bone orchard
  25. Yeah it seems that there are a lot of great bands from outside the us, even moreso than I would think. I found that a lot of the music/bands I just started listening to are from europe or outside USA. Even though rock/metal has mostly waned quite a bit, outside the us its just getting started again. Its friggin awesome.
