  1. G2 > G1 > G4 >= G5 > G3 Just to clarify, the fyora graphic was only changed in G2 in the Windows version.

  3. Someone told me that Intel strips their factories and sells them every two years because the technology is already too outdated to use. And what was that theorem that predicted the growth of technology in a linear pattern?
  4. I always wondered about the seemingly multi-gender dragons of the trilogy... Also: Originally Posted By: waterplant I don't like his mind control stuff - a pleasant, functioning society without anyone being actually free. sound familiar...? North Korea, anyone?

  6. Quote: Non-native speakers of Latin Wouldn't that be the whole world? We read The Princess Bride in my English class. I thought it was a really fun book, with a funny (but totally false) frame story. It's also laced with interesting bits of satire, especially in the made-up frame story parts. Without the fabricated backstory, the book would lose a lot of depth and appeal. All in all, I liked it. It's better than the movie, though the movie is one of my favorites.
  7. As far as the end of the world goes, this would be interesting to see. I wonder if anything will end up going wrong? Or if anything has already gone wrong? (I.e. calculating numbers that deal with the future beyond this point, such as long-term mortgages.)
  8. You can use the Return Life spell (which you probably should not have, unless you've been cheating), reload an earlier saved game, or, most easily, find a healer. Healers can revive your dead characters, for a cost. I believe that Carol in Fort Duvno is a useful, nearby healer. If not, talk to people in other nearby towns. Priests often offer healing services, but not always. Oh, yeah, you can also use the character editor. Open your saved game and click the "Do Healing" button next to the dead character.
  9. I was simply paraphrasing the radio show, in which the expert (don't remember his name) does indeed more specifically state that in order for certain drugs to work, they have to have receptors in the brain. (i.e., yes, not all drugs affect the brain or nerves, or even work.) As for his allusion that all drugs are in the brain, I think he meant that if we could directly control the receptors and transmitters of the brain, it would almost be as if many drugs were in the brain, ripe for the using. The very trick of which waterplant speaks is also covered in the show, by its inventor (also can't recall the name here). Odd how we begin talking of "the brain" and "the master" even though it is from that very place that these words spring. We may think we're in control, yet we are so easily tricked by simple placebos. Another interesting example of placebo found on this radio show is medical hypnosis. A doctor removed a never-before-cured dermatological disease from a patient using nothing more than hypnosis, but could never duplicate the magic again.
  10. See also Placebo. Strange how for a drug to work, our brain must have receptors for it, implying that every drug in the world is also in our brain. Harnessing the power of the placebo effect is quite difficult, but has a lot of potential, though I doubt it can ever replace regular medicine, since the effects wear off more quickly. If I may, I recommend this show in the highest regards. (Oh, and that stuff about believing The Onion was funny. And sad. Also, I've never heard of noncebo, sounds interesting.)
  11. Strange. It's possible that the runtime error corrupted data, though I highly doubt that mere hanging could cause corruption. Some more detailed information about your computer would be useful: OS, processor speed, RAM, etc. You also might try emailing Mr. Vogel. Welcome to Spiderweb, by the way!

  13. 1. You can rarely have too much endurance. Luck is very useful for resisting magic (and basilisks) and saving your life if you die. I second Random with the Assassination; it can make all the difference. 2. I just finished A2 with a duo on Hard (or whatever it's called). Fireblast was definitely my most used spell. Sadly, the further you get, the more useless Sanctuary becomes. I had it at level 3, but multitudes of creatures still easily attacked me. You probably know already, but First Aid is quite a waste. Same with Anatomy, but most others have their points. For special skills, I recommend Barter, Magery (expensive), Blademaster, and Parry. Again, most spells have their points, but Sanctuary is bad, and Call Beast + Create Illusions are mostly worthless in about the last fourth of the game. Slow and Haste are both extremely useful, especially at level 3. 3. Pretty much. 4. Welcome to Spiderweb! (Please leave your sanity at the door.)
  14. Moi aussi. I'm a sucker for well-thought graphics.
  15. Welcome to Spiderweb! Good luck using little magic. I've been wanting to try just this, so I might copy your interesting build. Have fun!

. . . if you're a random ignorant idiot. Green meat scares me, not entices me. Of course, the general public of America is frequently considered to be composed of random ignorant idiots, so maybe it is a good idea. (Don't worry, I understand this concept, I just fear the example.)
  17. It seems that crystal items work better in the earlier games. Also, try increasing your Luck skill.
  18. I agree with everything; I was just thinking that America will never be in that kind of situation, so now's as good a time as any. But you're definitely correct, and I would go fight if Canada got angry. Very angry. Now though, it's looking quite unlikely.
  19. Welcome to Spiderweb! 1. All I can say on this is to make sure you killed the guards and let the slaves escape below. I'm not sure why else this would happen. 2. Same lack of knowledge here. What's supposed to happen is this: you get Asterios back. You go downstairs with him to try to blow up Cotra. Myranna appears and kills him, and then you kill her. You flee to the east, killing sliths as you go. The barrels should be exploding as you go. You escape, run away, and the city explodes. Any more details you can give would help a little more. And to ditto Randomizer, your problem could have happened if you stole too much in the sight of others. If that is the case, I fear it may be too late. 3. It's a quite powerful enemy. Shift out your warriors, since its fire attack gets stronger the longer it's on one character. Use lots of Invulnerabililty Potions. Hit it. A lot. You might need to wait until you have a higher level . . . or even turn down the difficulty. Good luck. Sorry I couldn't help more! Edit: Random beat me to it when I was typing. Gr.
  20. Yes, but (I think) only if you kill the leader and find the evidence that they are working against Avernum.
  21. I agree. He is depressing. And an annoying used-to-be. I may be wrong, but it seems to me that some people who say no might not really be putting themselves in the situation. Would you go off to war right now? Or would you prefer to stay at home? Of course, many people still sign up for the army today. Avernum has the advantage of giving you fame and fortune if you're a very successful soldier. I'm just saying that it seems that most people in this country (USA, and many others) aren't willing to go risking their lives for their country. If you are, I must say I am quite glad and impressed to hear it.
  22. What happened to his A2 walkthrough? I liked that.
  23. Well, there's plenty of topics around that have to do with party creation, but here's a tiny handful of ideas: (note that I haven't tried any in A6 yet) •Two characters, one warrior with Priest spells, one archer with Mage spells •Four characters, all spellcasters •Two characters, one all-out warrior, one Mage/Priest I can't recall many right now. Keep in mind that fighters make bad Mages, but good Priests.
  24. @Celtic Minstrel: I actually play cello. Sorry, I don't know much about other instruments, though I do also play piano. Also, those factors would apply to the viol family as well as the violin family. Whatever. I've never heard of this mantis shrimp! It's really cool. It's quite amazing how complicated their eyes are, since one would usually consider shrimp a fairly simple creature.
  25. I love those drawings! And I agree, I also enjoy A3 a lot. I must admit that when I first saw A4, I was scared. It is the worst Spiderweb game, but it's not completely bad. @Hapsen: I actually like A1, though it does have a couple problems. Sometimes the dialogue can be slightly shallow, and the lack of a quest list drives me crazy. When I finished A6, I felt compelled to go back and play through all of them in order again. It was fun to go from the sadness and unfortunate changes in A6 back to the original feeling and freedom of A1. (I'm on A2 now.)
