  1. What Erasmus is saying is that one can never be absolutely certain in any natural fact. It is theoretically possible that the existence of the now-extinct dodo bird is a myth propagated and maintained by the archeological community. This can be expanded to pretty much anything. Is the Earth really beneath you, or is it just an illusion? What exactly is real? One of the old dead Greeks has a great quote about the only thing one can be certain of is one's own existence. I'm too lazy to find it.

I know that the 2 college calc texts I have have differentiation, integration, series, and multivariate, with maybe a bit of extra diffy-Q.
  3. What exactly has Bin Ladin been doing in the last half-dozen years? Has he been active in anything significant, or is his death more symbolic of Bush's "War on Terror?" Maybe we can quick screwing over the Middle East now. It's been nearly 100 years (WWI really started the whole Israel mess, although it wasn't made until after WWII). I think we should care more about the Beatification of Pope John Paul II (the Great). Then again, wikinews is all I ever see.
  4. Hmm, I think my French proff should give me some extra credit for these forums.

  6. In game explanation: You got there too late. Most of the fighting has gone down, and most of the surviving invaders have fled. Redbeard stays away from the fighting because, well, he's old enough to be a grandparent. Out of game explanation: More work, less story telling. Jeff didn't feel like it.
  7. The dialogue doesn't really affect the game in any major aspect: it's more of a bonus. That said, any combination of characters will give interesting dialogues. Playing through right now, my party of Click to reveal.. Shadow Walker (me), Blademaster and Sorceress (I'm bad with names) as my partners is working quite well. It's a balanced party and the companions' dialogues mesh well.
  8. As great as that was to watch, follow the advice of the larger part of my icon/avatar thing. "Firefly, look it up."

That'd be lovely, but I'm not in high school. I'm doing my BA. I wasn't talking about you specifically, just mentioning that, in my experience, high school provides situations that had been under discussion. College Board divides calculus into AB and BC, which roughly correspond to the first three sections of calculus. A (or I) is limits and differentiation, B (or II) is integration etc, and C (or III) is Series. My understanding is that C/III often includes some multivariate and vector, as that's what we did. College Board only goes up to series and a few other tidbits, but after a year of AB, there was very little B to cover, so we did far more C than is required.

  14. Facebook probably wants to stay away from "dislikes" to avoid harassment issues. Given how touchy people can be, it wouldn't take more than a day for someone to get offended by a comical "dislike" on their status before Facebook was dealing with a whole new swarm of complaints. I'd still like to see a "dislike" button, but I'd like a lot of things that I'll never get.

  17. Euler's method is hardly used any more in generating functions, or so my calc teacher says. I know that Apple's "Grapher" program has Euler's, Runge-Katta's, and Romberg's methods all built in. There may be other applications of Euler's of which I am unaware. That seems often to be the case when I assert things. Oh well, I'm still young.
  18. My guess is that they're guessing. With the mac release, it just appeared and then Jeff announced it here.
  19. Who knows, maybe Jeff has a secret criminal past, and he got out of it because someone screwed up his Miranda rights and got major evidence removed from the case!
  20. Hey look, a coherent guide right where I should've expected it. Thanks.
  21. Taylor Series (serieses?...) are infinite series (adding up an infinite number of terms generated by a rule, like a function's improper integral to infinity being evaluated only at integer values) that give equivalent values to certain transcendental functions. Uh, let's try again. A sequence is a string of numbers generated by the rule evaluated at consecutive integers from start to finish. Add up all of the numbers in the sequence and you have a series. Infinite series start at a non-negative integer and add up all of the terms until the final term, when infinity is placed in. The integer being placed in the expression is often denoted as "n" or "k". Taylor Series are Power Series, which means that they also contain a variable, often "x". Taylor Series are used to generate polynomial equivalents to transcendental functions (like trigonometric and logarithmic stuff). Take Calc III.
  22. Eleven? My sister is 8 and finished reading the first book recently. Admittedly, it took her quite a while to finish. After she had watched the first 5 movies and my mom wouldn't let her watch the 6th, we looked at the film ratings, and she has now seen her first 2 PG-13 films. The books and films alike both take on darker and darker tones as they progress. The first book is fine for children 10 and under, but by the 5th, I think 13 is the minimum appropriate age. After all, they were banned in Texas!.....
  23. So here I am, back with another mac-related question. I hope you don't tire of them, as the internet is a big place and finding an actual mac tech support forum is a daunting task (change is big and scary!). Alright, so here's the deal. Our old G5 iMac's harddrive died. And rather than replace it (it's a PPC, so we need to in a year anyway), we just got a new HD for it. We have a USB external drive that we use to back it up, but my dad relies on Time Machine. We found the Time Machine backups in a file with the computer's name on it, but all of the folders inside each dated backup are shortcuts to gibberish land, except for a few (such as Applications, and most of the ones in that folder are gibberish). Two points to make: 1. We booted onto 10.4 (my brother stole our 10.5 disc, although it is expected to be returned via post in a few days). 2. Where can we find the actual applications, iTunes music, etc. Do we have to wait for 10.5 to get them off; will 10.5 do anything to help? Thanks again!

It seems like they cut too much our of the movies in an attempt to keep them around 2 hours. I would have been much happier with a more properly paced and fleshed out 3 hour film per book.
