Fledgling Fyora czartchonn
Hey there. Just bought the game off steam, and have a question. I've entered the first dungeon, but it isn't dark down there at all. Is this a bug or is it supposed to be like this?
Hatchling Cockatrice Lilith
It's working as designed. Even "dark" areas are not really all that dark: using a candle or lamp will make it easier to see, but you can get around without one. Fledgling Fyora czartchonn
Ok, I just assumed that areas were dark since you get light sources in this game. Why have light sources if you can see as clear as daylight everywhere?
Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
Light sources increase the radius that you can see in dimly lit areas. This gives you a chance to notice the monster before it attacks. Welcome to Spiderweb Software. Please leave your sanity at the door. Play Avernum 4 where light sources couldn't be used and try to find the blackened body lying on the black floor in the dungeon.
Unflappable Drayk ĐªгŦĦ Єяŋϊε
WOW had an april fools dungeon involving the cave of darkness inhabited by the Dark Something Or Another (i dont remember what)and there even were screenshots of a black screen to go with it. Understated Ur-Drakon Earth
totally dark dungeon/cave/etc would be slow to search throughly and added with ambushes it would lead players advancing on game to stop or at least slow it alot. Well-Actually War Trall A less presumptuous name.
Totally dark caves were by far the worst part of the pokémon video games. I like how spiderweb does darkness - it can be a little harder to see things, particularly switches, but you don't have to go run back and buy a candle every time you find a new cave. Unflappable Drayk ĐªгŦĦ Єяŋϊε
unless you go to the pit of the wyrm. (actually it wasn't pitch black, there was a ring of light around each character)

Actually in the older Spiderweb games (BoA and older, excluding the Geneforge games), darkness did mean you couldn't see anything, apart from one space in front of you. It's only the Geneforge/second Avernum trilogy engine that has darkness you can actually see in.

Of course, since the first mage spell created light for you and cost almost nothing to cast, you hardly ever had to worry about it. Dikiyoba. Burgeoning Battle Gamma ToddMcF2002
I wish Jeff would make lamps and candles useful like the Eschalon series. Near total darkness adds a great touch.
Easygoing Eyebeast *i
I disagree. We had this in Exile and the old Avernum series. It really just added a bunch of busywork. I'm content to suspend disbelief and assume that the party is smart enough to produce some nominal light source on their own volition, just as I'm able to suspend disbelief and assume that take care of other mundane life tasks. Ineffable Wingbolt Superba
Those like me who have older eyes thank for the lights. Then it is probably better to have them also to those who have older (and small) monitors.
Understated Ur-Drakon Earth
that pit in A5 was 1 of darkest places in Avernums and candles etc weren't much help.
Hatchling Cockatrice Alorael at Large
In earlier Avernums the proper solution to light problems was to cast Light hundreds of times in a row while wandering the outdoors. The light would then last long enough to get you through the entire game, barring any areas with automatic full darkness. —Alorael, who did not find this particularly fun or even interesting. And even if that were removed, just having to spend a few spell points on illumination or tote around some lamps doesn't actually add much to the game. That's gone for the same reason that mandatory food is.
Hatchling Cockatrice Quiconque
It did find it amusing in Exile that Light lasted for EXACTLY the duration of time during which you'd recover 1 SP (its cost), and Long Light lasted for EXACTLY the duration to recover 3 SP, also its cost.
