Unflappable Drayk Death Knight
I tried playing spiderweb's geneforge a while back and couldnt get into it. Im not a big fan of party based games and am more into the lone wanderer type rpgs like oldschool fallout and eschalon series. What game would be a good game to play for those tastes other than Avadon which isnt out yet? Or should i just wait for avadon? I dont know much about these games, but they've been praised quite a bit and seem very my style. Any info would be helpful. Thanks.
Easygoing Eyebeast VCH
Geneforge is a lone wanderer type game. I played all the Geneforge games with a blademaster guardian that never summoned creatures.
Rotghroth Rhapsody RCCCL
You can play the Avernum games with only one character as well, it'll be more difficult, but if you check the forums, you'll find topics and guides on solo attempts. Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
It's just harder to play without the others, especially the earlier games when you have to carry all that loot back to sell. But there is nothing that says you have to use a full party. I always had trouble getting into Geneforge games because the real time movement outside of combat meant having to constantly watch for rogue creations suddenly moving across the screen when I grabbed a bite during the game. VCH - Geneforge has guardians not blademasters.

Hatchling Cockatrice Alorael at Large
Avernum can be played with a solo character, but it's more challenging. Geneforge can very easily be played with solo characters; in some games it's harder, in some it's easier, but many builds will have just you or maybe you and a few temporary creations. Avadon is the least friendly to going it alone. —Alorael, who recommends trying Agents in Geneforge if you really want to avoid making creations. At least for the earliest games it should work just fine.
Unflappable Drayk Death Knight
I started playing as an agent in the 1st geneforge. Its pretty fun so far as i am in the tutorial. I am going to go all out with blessings to make my guy a melee powerhouse. Dont know about magic and mental spells though. Just another question, Are there any skills in avernum and geneforge series that give stealth or ability to sneak and get by enemies unnoticed? I would like this agent to have a skill like that as agent in meaning would suggest stealth, guile and finesse.
Magnificent Ornk Dikiyoba
Leadership and mechanics are always good if you want to avoid combat. There's no trainable skill for stealth, although the fourth and fifth games have an invisible stealth skill. There will be plenty of opportunities to sneak into places you don't belong in all the games. Dikiyoba.
Unflappable Drayk Death Knight
Thanks for the info. Im going to make this agent go with missile weapons like batons in the later geneforges. Ill mix that with spells and tools. Batons are in the 1st game right?
Well-Actually War Trall Micawber
They are- but be warned, in GF1 you lose a round whenever you reload the baton. Sod's law dictates that this always happens at the worst possible time...
Rotghroth Rhapsody Tracer Bullet
And that is why all batons need to be upgraded from six-shooters to eight-shooters. Or, better yet, they could design some kind of easily-exchangeable magazine for them.
Magnificent Ornk Student of Trinity
A baton specialist Guardian is one of the most fun ways to play most of the Geneforge games.
Rotghroth Rhapsody Tracer Bullet
Is it effective?
Easygoing Eyebeast Dantius
You can roleplay as Dirty Andras! "I know what you're thinking- did I use up four action points, or was it maybe only three? So tell me, Creation, are you feeling lucky? Well? Do ya?" Magnificent Ornk Student of Trinity
Yeah, a baton specialist is quite good. You can use them hand to hand, or from a distance. Pumping Dex lets you act fast and dodge (at least on lower difficulties) as well as increasing your damage. Batons and thorns are always plentiful; there's no risk of running out of any of them. Often you can get hold of a higher type of baton a bit early, and though it will be a while before you start finding refill thorns for it, it will give you some extra firepower for emergencies. Once you get to reapers, you're really deadly. Those things do more damage than any other weapon, I believe. You don't get the extra attacks from Quick Action, or the Anatomy bonus in G1. So you probably never do quite as much damage as a melee specialist. But being able to fight from a distance can let you run around and stretch the fight out, and win a few more fights even if you win them a bit more slowly. It's fun because you have to think a bit about where to stand and shoot from, and where to move to, instead of just clicking on the thing next to you until one of you dies. Plus, you know, millions of games have swords or firebolts. Not so many have thorn batons.
Easygoing Eyebeast Dantius
It's also worth noting that in every single game, the most powerful attack has always been the Reaper Baton with its unique d12 damage die. At higher levels, this can cause absolutely crippling damange to a single target. Combined with a Submission baton for stunning and a few creations forcrowd control, boss fights begin to approach a trivial level of difficulty. Easygoing Eyebeast The Mystic
Guns, though not quite as widespread as swords or firebolts, are still much more abundant than thorn batons.
