Garrulous Glaahk Ociporus
Anyone know how a guy gets to be a beta-tester?
Hatchling Cockatrice Lilith
Keep checking in on the website: there will be a beta call announced at some point. Be warned that applications tend to close very quickly.
Understated Ur-Drakon Nioca
Simple. First, you have to demonstrate an interest and drive to study fish. Then... Oh, wait. Basically, Jeff sends out a public tester's request sometime when the game is close to completion. You just sign up then, and if you're lucky, you're chosen to be a beta tester. EDIT: Sniped, and by someone more informative, too.
Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
Beta testing with "experienced" testers has just started. By "experienced" I mean they have tested a previous game and lack the sanity to stop. Jeff usually starts asking for new testers in about 2 months. Understated Ur-Drakon Earth
and those "experienced" testers abuse all available loopholes on game and then jeff fixes those and normal players have hard times ahead.

That's only because starting with Avernum 5, Jeff wanted to know how we were fighting boss fights. Before that ignorance led to exploits. Magnificent Ornk Student of Trinity
I remember in testing Geneforge 4, when I spilled the beans about the corner exploit. (Under the old Geneforge combat system, where you could move after attacking if you had enough points for a second attack, you could step round a corner, shoot, then step back out of sight. If your opponents were far enough away, then by the time they got line of sight on you they'd have too few AP left to attack. In congested zones you could kill everything without getting attacked at all.) There may well have been other reasons for Jeff's big combat change in G4, but it did happen right after I confessed that stuff, so I feel at least somewhat responsible. The rule that you couldn't close a door if enemies were close started there, too.
Hatchling Cockatrice Mea Tulpa
And those were good changes -- because they made things more challenging and less exploitable for optimizing players without making things any harder for more typical players. Easygoing Eyebeast Dantius
Originally Posted By: Ociporus Just where does this "public tester's request" get posted? Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
It's placed in the News section of the Spiderweb Games site and usually someone sees it and posts a message here with a link. Announcements is for new game release notices.

Articulate Vlish Tuldrac
<3 abusing a new game to the point of ultra glitching. Never been a tester before, but still have found bugs =D
Fledgling Fyora T. Scott
How do you actually "ask" to be a tester? At first I thought you were talking about an in-game...thing.
Understated Ur-Drakon Earth
if you see thread at announcements where reads beta-testers wanted then you do as post says and you might get to be beta-tester.
Easygoing Eyebeast VCH
isn't beta testing like, work, or something
Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
Beta testing is just playing the game until you find a way to make it fail.
Easygoing Eyebeast Triumph
The application for Mac betatesting is now open. O.o

Easygoing Eyebeast VCH
I was going to apply but then I thought to myself why would I want to play a unfinished game? And besides I have my hands full renovating my home.
Easygoing Eyebeast *i
Beta testing sounds like lots of fun. In reality, it can be very frustrating as well. If you agree to beta test, make sure you are willing to sink hours of your time into playing a game that will be broken in parts and be willing to replay those parts repeatedly to help Jeff fix the problem. Also, make sure you are the type that is good at taking notes and documenting. This is valuable to ensure the community gets as bug-free of a game as possible. Fledgling Fyora HardCode
Wish I had the time to sign up. But at least I can offer some helpful hints for those who are going to beta test. Start off by reading the section titled Three Parts to Every Good Bug Report found in Joel Spolsky's article Painless Bug Tracking.
Chittering Clawbug jecowa
Is anyone else checking their email much more often than usual?
Understated Ur-Drakon Earth
not me.
Chittering Clawbug jecowa
I notice from the link Dantius posted that the Avernum 6 beta application was only open for two days. It's been nearly a week with Avadon, so maybe he isn't getting very many applicants.
Hatchling Cockatrice Mea Tulpa
The timing of the beta testing is different from any of Jeff's releases in half a decade, or maybe longer. I would guess that the time between (American) Thanksgiving and Christmas is the busiest time of year for the target demographic, between the academic calendar, holiday travel, and the holidays themselves. It's entirely possible that a number of Jeff's regular beta testers said they couldn't commit to Avadon's timetable.
Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
Jeff's last comment to us was that he was working on writing the game. All the applications may just be sitting in his in box while he's eating Thanksgiving leftovers.
Chittering Clawbug jecowa
Have to constantly check emails. Beta invites could be sent out at any time. Wouldn't want to waste any time that could be spent with Avadon.
Easygoing Eyebeast Triumph
Umm...the News page has said since the 5th that they got all the beta-testers they needed. So you probably don't need to keep up the e-mail watch any more.
Chittering Clawbug jecowa
Longing for beta. Today or two to three weeks? Wait! *checks mail again*
Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
Based upon my experience, Jeff takes about a week to send out notices after he closes applications.

Chittering Clawbug jecowa
I'm kind of thinking Jeff plans on waiting until after Christmas to send out beta copies. Maybe I'll stop checking email every minute.
