I don't know if you want to wait 'that' long. Depending on your individual damage spell preferences, there's a pretty good L3 spell within the tower. If you've managed to recover a Crystal Soul then you're probably strong enough to take the tower. (iirc the layout - hide around a nearby corner, fight mode, as many buffs as possible, he wants to chat before the fight so everyone races in & summons a distraction/meat shield before he turns hostile & you can hit him, chat, fight, hope for the best)

Add me to this camp too. First time through is on Normal. Then at least 2-3 run throughs on Hard before even attempting Torment. This gives you a chance to get a general feel for the game, knowledge of you should wait until you meet 'x' before doing 'y' (as an example, selling mined crystals in A5), major booby traps/hard areas, etc. Jumping straight to torment just seems like an exercise in frustration because for the most part you do have to min/max things to survive. Re: Journals One of the things I've lamented the lack of for years & years is having a real journal. One that notes that you wanted to write could be kept in. Especially in the early portion of the various games you're constantly running across a door/chest/spellbooks/etc that you need to have 'x' level of tool use/arcane lore to open/read. It would be wonderful to have a page or three where you could write/type "Chest in sw Formello needs TU 8 to open" or "Barrier in north Slime Pit needs L2 to remove". Reminders that I need to go back to areas later on to see what I couldn't see way back when. True, I could just write it down on a piece of paper, but invariably that paper will disappear into the void of my desk over the days/weeks in between the times I actually get to sit down & play. Deeply into the category of "First world problems" I realize...but it would be nice...

IIRC you aren't missing anything (switch or bypass) but have to blast your way through. Do you have an earlier save you could go back to & gain some more experience before coming back to the tower (it will get tougher than this before you reach Erika...)? Alternately, depending on the difficulty level that you're playing at, you could reduce that temporarily to get past that area & then put it back to where it was. (you 'might' be able to get past the gate if you can get one or two of your characters through before it closes and then exiting combat & hoping everyone gathers on the far side - but I wouldn't count on that to work)

Geneforge 1 demanding to make changes in order to be played

Possibly/probably asking to change the resolution on your monitor. I know when I play some older games on my newer system (W10) with a higher resolution monitor that I get a popup asking for permission to change things. Invariably it's just to change the resolution back down to what was more common 15-20 years ago. -
You're in for a good time as there are 5 more chapters to the Avernum story. I'd love to be seeing them for the first time again Yeah, that's the 'atrium' (you've got a ways to go before you finally get out of there - with several good fights along the way... (evil laughter). In the picture it looks like there is a hidden switch off to the left of your lead guy, did you push that one? As Randomizer said, there are a lot of hidden switches in that 'dungeon', especially the first part. I'm glad that you know about the 'u' thing (for others who happen to read this 'u' stands for 'use' and when clicked it shows anything in the area that can be 'used' ... such as secret switches...). About all I can suggest at this point is to go back to the start & keep clicking u to make sure that you didn't miss anything on the way in. Or even go back to the save right before you went in/before you got started there (you did save there didn't you...?) and start that section over again, you really aren't that far into it.

I wouldn't worry about it too too much. I tend to explore everywhere/do all the side quests & even with doing that I never really felt a time crunch that 'the cities are falling apart, go do 'x' RIGHT NOW...' IIRC, even if town 'x' is destroyed/taken over any NPCs that you actually interact with/do quests for, relocate to the nearest big city so that shouldn't be an issue. I think in all my assorted play throughs, only once have I puttered around enough so that enough time passed for 'the' big time related event to happen (ToM). So again, time matters but not 'that' much. (honestly in the early part of the game I kept an eye on the day counter as I was near Ft Emergence often enough that it was worth swinging by to pick up my 25gp per diem, once money wasn't so tight I really didn't check it too often) Have fun, it's a great game

Specifically a bow & arrow archer or ranged weapons in general? In most games (Spiderweb and elsewhere) my preferred type is a ranged weapon character. In Avadon I tend to play a shadow walker (who flings razordisks around) as they do decent damage (iirc anyway, been a few years since I've been in the Avadon universe) from afar to whittle down hit points & then can finish things off with melee if 'x' charges them. (shamans use javelins for their ranged weapons but, again, iirc that's more of a backup if their spell energy is low). And to add to Randomizer, welcome.

Yes... At 'this' particular point in time I'd go with Queen's WIsh. Jeff/SW is remaking Geneforge 1 with an estimated release date of January (?). So time to play QW & 'then' go onto the Geneforge series. Both do a very good job building their own universe/s & the story is rich either way (QW2 is probably the next game after the current one is done. One difference with that upcoming game compared to all other SW games is that (in theory at this point) you will be continuing with the character/world choices that you made in QW1 - which sounds really cool if he can pull it off).

Nice certainly is ... well, nice & a good attitude/default setting to have towards others. I look at it as more a practical, goodwill building exercise. Who was it who said "Quantity has a quality all it's own..." (Stalin, Mao, one of those who didn't care about taking casualties). You're three (granted, highly skilled & armed) Hands all by your lonesome (maybe with an Eye on the far side of town). If you piss off enough of the locals, they 'will' eventually be able to get to you (you've got to sleep sometime, even if you're rotating guard shifts). And then when the inevitable investigation into your disappearance starts, the town will just say "I dunno, they said something about having to go see some Titans, maybe they got eaten..." (for a real life example of this - Ken McElroy). Again, it's been several years since I've delved into the Avadon universe (perhaps while waiting for Geneforge...) so no specific examples. I do think that him eliminating true threats/rivals was implied if not specifically mentioned. Yes Hearts are 'supposed' to speak their mind/give good advice. Redbeard however comes across as a "I know better than you" narcissist. The Hearts have been with/observed him for years. They know him well & probably tailor their advice to be somewhat along the lines of what he wants to do (for self preservation purposes) even if they don't agree at all (think of North Korea now or Iraq under Saddam, the people around the dictator have had a long history of stroking his ego/telling him for the most part what he wants to hear - to do otherwise gets one tossed under the bus and run over). They may argue with him, but again for self preservation, they're going to agree with him more often than not. Redbeard may think that he's open minded enough to listen, but bear in mind that he's been in place for decades, in a job where the previous occupants were assassinated on a fairly regular basis. Paranoid suspicion of most everyone isn't just a job description, it's a requirement. -

Another thing to keep in mind (if I'm remembering my Avadon history correctly) is that over the decades, Redbeard has eliminated/exiled/killed pretty much anyone who showed up who was smart/ambitious enough to potentially be a threat to him. So you wind up with a powerful leader surrounded by unthinking toadies willing to do most anything asked because their Dear Leader told them too... So while a significant portion of the population may hate who's in charge & are willing to revolt, there's nobody in the opposition strong/smart enough to do so through the systematic elimination of those who might be able to over the years. It was into that maelstrom that you were just dropped as a common soldier/Hand -

You've hit on many of the reasons/points why the Avadon series is my least favorite of all of Jeff's/SW's games. But the moral ambiguity/chaos isn't necessarily a bad thing. Most games are fairly black & white - you're a hero who sniffs unicorn farts to build up your strength (Avernum 3 excepted...) to go out & battle the monsters who are drowning puppies in outhouses. The side you 'should' be playing is pretty clear cut (there are of course the occasional people who want to act completely chaotic evil & kill everything in every town/dungeon they come across...). Avadon is one of those reasonably rare games/series that makes you actually think about what's going on/deeper issues (which isn't a good thing for the real life player who just wants a bit of escapism for a few hours). It's been a couple of years since I've visited the Avadon universe so I can't give specific examples, but for me personally, the way I got through things was to just play it as presented & let events unfold as they do. You're essentially a low ranking foot soldier acting on a tactical level with essentially no impact/input on strategic issues (the ones that Redbeard is dealing with)*. It's not perfect, but I can at least internally justify some of the actions that my character is forced to make. (I do wish though that there were other response options in some encounters (such as helping out a poor farmer clear out some local monsters) where you could just have done what you just did as a matter of building goodwill with the local populace rather than accepting the meager payment offered or demanding even more. *Think of it as you being a rookie police officer joining a fairly corrupt big city's force. If the corruption/shakedowns run all the way up your chain of command, there's really not a lot that you, as someone on the bottom of the totem pole, can really do to change things. If you don't accept your portion of the (extremely small at your level) kickbacks, nobody who is corrupt (a significant portion of your day to day work partners) is going to trust you/have your back in dangerous situations & might even think that you're an undercover Fed looking to break up the corruption (which could be very dangerous for you even if it's completely wrong). Sometimes you just have to go along to get along until you can get yourself out of that hellish situation. -
I've long thought that a better ending for him would be a note found in the wreckage that he & a few followers were headed north. If A5 is ever redone Jeff could add a new area with their survivors/wreckage of a new town (maybe somewhere near the Drake Pillars - as they would have been one of the first human explorers down the river (probably wreckage as otherwise there would have to be a lot of rewriting history). **** Anyway, theloathable, you say that you're at around L30 but don't say 'where' you are in the game/where or why you're stuck. Are your guys/gals glass cannons, able to deal out a lot of damage but get crushed when any damage is dealt to them? All your money spent on training in 'all' spells rather than the ones that you use the most? Etc. I know that you don't want spoilers, but with no information on what/how you're doing it's hard to give any advice ("well, if you're at 'x' place, why don't you go do the easier 'y' quest rather than the 'z' one that you're leaning towards"). I don't generally play on torment, but of the three game ending quests, I always found the alternate exit one the easiest of the three fwiw.

Zombie courier job

Hopefully that will work. If not, well it should drop off your quest list once it goes unfulfilled. You'll be locked out of that particular job dispatcher for a month but the others should be available to you (hopefully you didn't get the job at Spineridge as they seemed to have the best paying jobs available most of the time). I just finished a replay of A3RW & noticed that some of the time with an AoE spell (in addition to not collecting needed parts) you wouldn't get experience for killed bad guys. But sometimes you would - which makes it next to impossible to recreate for Jeff to chase it down as a bug. It got so that I would use something like icy rain (spray?) to damage the monsters quite a bit & freeze them where they were. Once they were worn way down & frozen then I'd switch to my guys finishing them off, safely distant, with an arrow or bolt of fire (& get the experience). Something to keep in mind if you're trying to level up. If you haven't seen it yet, there's a good thread in the A3RW Strategy Central on Job Board bounties & where to go to find monster 'x' (& apparently I was biatching about AoE problems three years ago...)
