  2. In the UK you won't have to rank everyone. I'll most likely go for my actual first choice as number 1 and then the major party I hate least as number 2, and leave the rest blank. There's no real point in me expending effort working out how much I like all the random independent candidates I don't know or care about.

What's so confusing about it? "Number the candidates in order of preference until you don't care any more" isn't terribly hard to do. For the counting, it's just repeated "Eliminate the least popular candidate, everyone who voted for them gets to choose someone else instead". (It's worth noting that the No to AV campaign has described the system in the most confusing way they could get away with, so if people are getting their information from that, it might explain why they don't understand it) I do appreciate the thought that my vote will get transferred to another party. Letting me say "I'd like A to win, but if that's not happening B would be my second choice, and C is terrible" is better than letting me say "I'd like A to win, but if that's not happening completely ignore the rest of my opinion", and better than "I'd like A to win, but because I don't think A will win, I'm going to have to lie and say I most want B to win, to keep C out".
  4. Either way, we'll be stuck with the voting system that gets chosen for ages. If No wins, the story will be "the people have spoken, and don't want electoral reform". I think AV is still better than FPTP though, so let's go with that.

I have no plans to trick google translate into doing something they don't want it to be used for.

Picking the texts out of the scripts is easy. The problem is that after the first 20 or so, the translations coming back were all "Suspected Terms of Service Abuse"

I'll point out that Avernumscript is written for just the Blades of Avernum game, and was designed without speed in mind; if you don't care about speed, you can of course run checks to see if you're taking up too much memory or still in the same while loop. Be careful here - you don't want to give the impression that Avernumscript is solving the halting problem by not caring about speed.
  12. I think the pointfulness of leadership/tool use depends very much on the game. In the Geneforges, it's a big thing, to the extent that it's possible to win the games without actually killing anything in combat. In Avadon, lockpicking is just a little thing that lets you get a bit more treasure from places, rather than something you'd build a character around. Whether to get lockpicking or not isn't a terribly interesting choice, and I suspect most people will maximise it early then forget about it anyway. Sure, Avadon could have been a game with diplomacy as a big thing, but it would be a radically different game. Incidentally, I suspect some resistance to a "leadership" stat comes from how making decisions in a game is generally the domain of the player, not the character. I don't know how to cast a fireball so it doesn't break suspension of disbelief to have to have the character learn to do it. I do know how to talk. (And finally, I'm perfectly fine with complex games. My favourite game has 24 races, 28 classes and when you die you stay dead)
  13. In combat mode, having one character go into the library and get the book, and another character leave the zone.
  14. I completely failed to notice the switch, and used combat mode trickery instead.
  15. Watch the movie Cronos. That's what scarabs are.
  16. If an item is useful for something other than selling, it'll tell you so in the item description.
  17. I was disappointed that I couldn't get a bribe to not kill her, then turn round and kill her.

    Healing

It opens up a little trick for tough fights - have one character run/teleport away out of sight, while the other two try to kill as many enemies as possible before they go down. When they die, end combat and have them resurrect/heal, then go in again.
  19. Jeff is sitting in his lair reading your posts and laughing about how Avadon has actually been finished for years.
  20. Someone still made them up. Might not have been one person, and might not have been the guy who wrote it down, but why should that matter?
  21. I didn't make any resolutions last year. This year, I made one. I've already done it. Next year, who knows?
  22. I don't like stuff that's designed to be addictive. I'll play it, but afterwards (and often during), I'll regret wasting the time.
