  7. If you're really worried about that 51%, then when you see the result, toss the coin again. If it comes up different, then use the result of the original toss. If it comes up the same, start again from the beginning.
  8. Avadon introduces Giant Intelligent Friendly Talking Ninjas. (You might disagree with the "giant" part, but they're larger than GIFTS).
  9. You can't teleport over special encounters.
  10. Not everywhere is as blatant as the US when it comes to gerrymandering. You won't find anything in the UK quite like this:
  11. So you have to vote for eight people? How much knowledge do voters have about them all? You seem to have quite a spread of parties on your chosen options, which suggests that you have a position on more individual candidates than I could ever care about.
  12. I like it that you can't get unlimited loot/experience by killing the same things over and over, if only because games that allow it tend to gravitate towards forcing you to do it. Disclaimer: Despite this, I have played and enjoyed Disgaea and Etrian Odyssey. There's probably just something wrong with me.

That sort of stuff gets called Analysis over here. btw, what's Cantor's lemma? The only thing I know of with his name on it is nothing to do with calculus.
  14. Given the sheer number of games out there that fail at it (ie, every game with an escort mission), it's got to be harder than it looks.
  15. The real reason for the famine is that a group of soldiers are running round Avernum obsessively hoarding every scrap of food that they can find.
  16. I think part of it might be because in A4, we're in territory that we "know" from previous games is nonlinear. So although we're effectively forced down a tunnel (but not completely - nobody's making you kill all those chitrachs), it's the route rather than the cave that's linear. In A5, we're in a totally new area, so we can see the tunnel for what it is. It probably doesn't help that pretty much every area in A5 has either one town, or one town at the start and another at the end. A4 had more variety there.
  17. The best thing about the old dialogue system was having no idea what you were supposed to ask about and typing xxxx in the hope that you'd hit something useful.
  18. The scripts are probably worth mentioning - as well as the game engine in C++, there's a custom-made scripting language that deals with things like dialogue and special monster abilities and so on. You can see those scripts by digging around in the game's folder.
  19. Late game enemies in A6 that you are supposed to kill do have a ludicrous number of hitpoints relative to how much damage you can dish out. It's very noticeable compared to the Geneforge games, where even late-game you can kill just about any non-boss-fight enemy in 3-4 hits.

Kind of tangential, but this reminds me that Greg Egan managed to write a story where an injection from the real line to a set of measure zero was critical to the plot. I can only assume that he did this because someone dared him to.

  22. There actually aren't any major conspiracies. Any time an organisation tries one, the Shadow World Government steps in to prevent it.

  25. The problem with most of the optimisation that goes on is that it's optimising for the whole thing. People will make things overly difficult through the whole game for the sake of having the most powerful character possible right at the end. A real optimiser would realise that buying that mass haste scroll now would have a bigger effect on the next battle than saving the money to buy 1/4 of a point of anatomy ever will.
