older games (1st trilogy prolly) player was able to get stucked party out with editor and in later games (2nd trilogy) player was able to get party outside game area (into darkness) and only way out was prolly backstostart-cheat unless had savegame before getting into darkness.

Ultima 6 is older and it had semi-sorta automap (although via spell or gem usage). if op wants to play flash rpgs then list expands quite a bit with single hero or with team-members.

why all-mage (caster assuming you will use priests too) party? you'd have troubles with monsters which are magic resistant and equipping 4 casters could become problematic.

priest spells are mainly heals and buffs and some enemies have good resistance to phys damage so mage is needed due that and what randomizer said, 3 fighters and priest can't kill big groups as quickly as 2 fighters and 2 casters (at least not until priest has access to div fire (useless against fire resistant monsters) and then priest needs tons of energy potions).

1. update graphic drivers (intel's site not dell's) and try again. 2. if steam-version has avernumdx.exe then download and install directx9.0c and try running that exe-file. no idea if avernumdx.exe is available to other than SW-versions.

Basilisk's games Eschalon Books are similar (although more to Geneforge than to Avernum/Avadon) and Ultimas (from 6 onwards).
