  1. By the way, the experience to which we're referring when we mention that there's a rule in play here is from BoE. There was a BoE scenario Corporeus (by the illustrious TM) that told the player in the readme that one should replace some of the default graphics within a BoE file in order to play the scenario. Also, TM put a MIDI in the download for background music. Spidweb refused to host it, partly because of changing the default files, and partly because of the MIDI.
  2. As a hint, I think it would involve going into gf3itemschars.txt and replacing a creature that you can shape with a servile. (That is, swap in servile stats in place of a fyora or a thahd or some other creation.) The exact details, though, I leave to you, since I haven't actually done it myself.
  3. LP doesn't require you to modify default graphic files. It accomplishes its default-modifying via a cmg file on a Mac (which doesn't change anything among the default files), and it happens to mention that one can create the same effect via modifying default graphic files on Windows. If you can manage to modify default graphics without touching the default graphic files, you're fine. Spidweb is just worried about people permanently damaging their games.
  4. For the record: making some effort at reasonable spelling and grammar is generally considered good manners around here. A typo or two is fine. A grammatical error or two may also be fine. Writing in chatspeak is not. This thread probably has little point, because Spiderweb is almost certain not to go in a particularly different direction than it has in the past few games (by which I mean multi-player, console-based, something like that). Basically, what Stareye said earlier in this thread is true. I'm tempted to lock this based solely on that, but meh. It's fine to dream, as long as you know that you're dreaming.

Which, if you really look at it, is quite an achievement. Neither do my scenarios, I think — except maybe LP, whose villain is probably my favorite of the villains I've created. Still, I don't think I've written a really memorable villain in a scenario. That's one of the things I'd like to try at some point, perhaps in a short scenario.

The rule, which you, in your infinite wisdom, have not grasped, is the following (and it bears repeating every now and then): it is generally considered bad manners to revive a topic without anything genuinely new and useful to add or ask. This person did in fact have something genuinely new and useful to ask (sort of), so this topic revival was fine. Woe betide those who virtually never have anything useful to say, though (and you know who you are).
  7. Isn't there a little landing you can reach to the south, also? Even if not, those gazers should walk around a little if you walk around long enough, I think.
  8. Quote: Originally written by Glory of Glorycles: Crossbows aren't necessarily superior, they are just used in a different way, generally faster and easier in combat. He meant in Avernum, not in real life. Crossbows always do more damage than comparable bows in Avernum, so they're superior in that sense.
  9. The alternative to dropping the bomb — continuing island hopping — was not exactly going to be a picnic. Read up on Iwo Jima. I shudder to think what would've happened if American forces had to do the same thing on Honshu as they did on Iwo Jima. It's worth bearing in mind, too, that the Japanese were a generation or two removed from the most intense medieval honor society ever to exist. Surrender was far, far worse than death. Back on topic, Rentar? A good villain? In BoA?! Rentar was not the greatest character to begin with, and her only appearance has been in UV!
  10. It mentions A4, which reminds me of something. I'm surprised that Jeff has never attributed the commercial success of A4 to the most obvious thing: the popularity of the previous Exile/Avernum games. It was the first all-new game in a very popular series in several years. Simply making an "Avernum 4" guaranteed that it would sell well, and it still would have even if it were just a port of Kill Ogre, Win Prize to the Geneforge engine. Still, on a more relevant topic, I'm definitely going to play GF4's demo, and there's a good chance that I'll actually get the full version and finish the game, which I didn't do with GF3. I like all of the things that he's saying about GF4. New AP system?

  12. Hmm, I guess I'll actually play the demo.
  13. Quote: Originally written by Emperor Tullegolar: The point where your evil actions outweigh your good intentions is when the line is crossed into villainhood Well, now we're back to definitions again. Does villain mean "antagonist" or does villain mean "evil character"? The creator of this poll clearly meant the former, and there's no reason to insist that that's a false definition.
  14. Quote: Originally written by Emperor Tullegolar: Your supposed to hate a good villain, not agree with him. Your supposed to fear him, not feel bad when you bathe the people he was tying to save in his blood. It sounds as though you're talking about heroic fantasy, something vaguely akin to Lord of the Rings (although Sauron has his own subtle motivations, lust for power and the like, but that's neither here nor there). I'm not sure that anyone in any Blades scenario (E or A) has pulled off a good Sauron-style villain. In a completely different point: by your definition, Stalker isn't a villain. However, he's included in the poll as a villain. The poll can't be wrong about what it means by a villain. Therefore, your definition isn't applicable to the poll. Thus, the relevant definition for the poll must be "antagonist."

Do the twelve that voted for him care to explain? It's probably as I said in another topic recently: the best villains are not just the ones who sit in their towers cackling and ordering innocent children to be slaughtered; the best villains are the ones who have a legitimate point to be made and happen, via circumstance or hubris or whatever, to be on the opposing side of the struggle.
  16. I can actually make it either way, probably.
  17. My opinion is a distinct "Meh." I don't care either way.
  18. I should actually be able to be there.
  19. It's generally good to find old threads that answer a question rather than creating new ones to ask the same question, but it's not necessary to check every single thread every single time you have any confusion in a game — it's just good manners not to ask a question that has been answered lower down on the same page. This question was fine. Lying to a newbie, on the other hand, is generally bad manners and foolish. The question for which this thread existed has been answered, so I think we're done here.
  20. Code: || ((i + 10 > get_memory_cell(7)) && (get_memory_cell(7) != 0)))) { There is apparently an extra parenthesis here. Delete the last "close parentheses."
  21. Yes, that was the point. You can't get 6 points in that. Come to think of it, could you with a script edit?
  22. Yeah, post the code. It's just about impossible to debug otherwise. Bear in mind that you have to give the special ability to everyone if you want everyone to be able to use it.
  23. Quote: Originally written by Nemesis: Alright then, if I want to give the ability at the beginning of the scenario, where do I put change_custom_abil_uses? I've tried putting it in LOAD_STATE, START_STATE, and START_SCEN_STATE START_SCEN_STATE is the one you want. Look at Bahssikava (among others) for an example of this.
