  1. For me the best game is A2, because it introduces the Vahnatai, who are one of the more original aspects of the Averniverse. 2nd best is A3 because of the adventuring potential; although it does unfortunately spoil the Vahnatai somewhat. A4 is comparatively weaker in terms of plot and population, but it does introduce a good game engine, so I am hopeful about future games.
  2. I've always used the PC versions and I've never found any major character to be missing. Even under Windows XP. So you went to Vahkhos's place and couldn't find anyone you could talk to? That could be an error or it could be an example of the feature that NPCs do tend to wander around (sometimes even going through secret doors), hence making finding them when you want quite tricky. The latter is more likely if all the other not-yet hostile undead are still wandering about. Go back and have another look. If it really is an error, it sounds like a corrupted save-file. You might need to reinstall, and start the game again from the beginning. Maybe you'd get a better response on the technical support forum?
  3. What on earth are you talking about? Please specify which white dot you can't get past.
  4. This is a long road- and at the end lies madness...
  5. What, so you don't think he rolls forward the same scripts from one game to the next? Get real.
  6. I can't really remember, but when you kill the King, either Erika teleports you away automatically, or you have to find a return portal (very likely behind a secret door). I don't particularly remember it and I completed it without any walkthroughs, so it must be standard Exilogy. The #1 Rule of Exile: There's Always a Secret Door, Except When There's a Special Item. Edit: I just played the battle again. You should be teleported away immediately you kill King H. The sound effects are such fun: [whip crack][oooh!][whip crack][uhhh!] and let's not forget the kill spell sound [chug-a-chug][blast!]
  7. Fair comment. However in the end game you are also usually fighting multiple enemies - for example in the monastery caves, the monsters are spawned in pairs of mixed type. While a rotghroth fights the enemy drayk/gazer/etc, one of the other attackers fights the enemy rotghroth. I find it's rare that a rotghroth doesn't have something to fight. And unlike magic creations, it never runs out of energy.
  8. I think battle shaping is worthwhile exclusively because of rotghroths. They are survivors - lots of health - and their attack slows and is lethal to all enemies except other rotghroths.
  9. Let's remember that in Avernum you have four characters with (presumably) different skills, so the issue of balance is less problematic. You aren't reliant on just one strategy, in effect you have four strategies running simultaneously. Thus you are much less likely to run into trouble. Someone with a knowledge of statistics can probably quantify the effect. PS. It's balance and Alorael. If I don't say it, someone else will.
  10. Actually I prefer the GF3 form of terror vlish. Terror attack irritates me because you spend half your time running trying to catch up with the fleeing enemy. I prefer the GF3 terror vlish poison attack, which is very powerful. Edit: However, terror was useful against Lord and Lady Rahul.
  11. Quote: Originally written by Zeviz: I prefer Shapers, because they fit best to the theme of the game. What he said.
  12. I tend to run a guardian plus magic creations. Make an artila as early as possible, at some point upgrade to a terror vlish, then switch to a gazer when available. I don't spend any points on other shaping skills. No magic except for healing craft & 2 points of blessing magic. It works, just about, but my guardian seems to spend a lot more of his time healing than he does waving a sword about. Very reliant on pods and crystals.
  13. Yes, and of course it is Dikiyoba's character who's obsessive-compulsive. Nothing to do with the player whatsoever. No siree.
  14. Why would you want to close doors - surely you're not planning to [sharp intake of breath] steal stuff from the poor folks of Avernum? If there's a legitimate reason do tell. To amplify previous responses, you need to stand near the door, click on the "look" button and then click on the door itself. Or, if you are using Windows, you can just right click on it. Edit: MORE typos...
  15. The only point of joining the Anama is to try out the 'challenge' of completing the game without use of mage spells. Joining then leaving again is just pointless.
  16. For no particular reason: Ethel, Jill - Agents Malcolm, Alf - Shapers Spike, Canute - Guardians For creations, I always give them an alliterative name: Archie the Artila (2nd one Annie) Charlie the Clawbug (2nd one Chrissy) Vinnie the Vlish (2nd one Vicky) Robbie the Rotghroth (2nd one Rory) Gary the Gazer (only ever needed 1 at a time so far) [Edit: sp]
  17. OK, I opened up the game again and I finally figured out what you are talking about. You need to destroy all 4 power crystals. They are outside the golem factory (to the N, E, S and W). You can access the E, S and W ones from the woods outside the factory. To reach the N one you need to go inside the factory and down to the basement, and out towards the north into the mountains. If you need any more help please read Relle's walkthrough here before you post again.
  18. Did you use the control panel in the SE corner of the 2nd level? You need to deactive the Alpha, Beta and Star barriers. They're toggle switches so if the Beta barrier is bothering you use the button once to switch it off.
  19. Yeah, I was replying to the person *i was talking to, the same person quoted by Thuryl in my quote of his (Thuryl's) post. I hope that clarifies things. Edit: even so, I can't see how the confusion arose - Schlotz didn't mention Geneforge, didn't use the words "how about" and didn't suggest a surface invasion. In other words not a single thing I said could possibly be taken to refer to him/her.
  20. Oh, that river. I see. I misread exiting the building as exiting Bargha.
  21. You need to fully explore the 2nd level and then come back.
  22. Quote: Originally written by Thuryl: Quote: Originally written by Marcelo: Quote: Originally written by *i: You mean your idea was serious? Why are you so surprised... creativity is not about coming up with broadly accepted ideas... See, here's the thing: it's not an original idea. About a dozen newbies before you have stumbled across the idea of mixing the Geneforge and Avernum continuity. It also sucks. Not to mention that Geneforge already has a plot arc established in GF1 which is still being played out and has nowhere near reached its conclusion, so it's just unnecessary to mix the two games. In terms of Avernum plot ideas, the idea of the surface world invading the underworld was already used in A2. And notice that it's not actually a plot in itself, it's merely a setting in which the main plot can take place. If you are going to suggest a plot (and I'm not going to discourage entirely), how about proposing something with a beginning, a middle and an end? Something that starts "how about" probably does not qualify...
  23. What do people think about Athron's lair? Do you feel your conscience twinge when you kill the drake, loot the dragon's stuff and read her books? [EDIT: Assuming that Athron is still a she in this particular game.]

  25. Bargha won't help you to cross the river, though. For that, you need to take a boat and explore the waterfall warren.
