  1. So you're saying a predictable game would be un-spiderweb? I'm predicting we play as human - with the opportunity to become mage, fighter or shaper as the game progresses. EDIT: If not become, then at the very least, recruit.
  2. I think you're looking for Elmer - he's in the auction house.
  3. Don't give up yet. I think it's possible you already have the key. Check your special items screen: do you have the Silver Key? The tunnel is an outdoors encounter and you can't ever enter it as such, you can only pick up the key once. Reading your first post again more carefully, I note that you refer to "opening the doors to the chamber". You don't need to open any doors. There is a secret passage at the north end of the east wall of the circlet chamber. You can enter via Meena's bedroom. You can access Meena's bedroom itself via another secret passage, from the east. This leads to a long passage and a door to the brigand's lair. Hope this helps.
  4. I suspect you won't get many disagreeing views, on this board. For me the Exile trilogy is one of comparatively few computer games I have ever got really into. I even liked the Exile graphics (more so than the Avernum ones).
  5. You can't find the key until Scab tells you where it is. You need to activate the right conversation option with him. It is possible to add special items using the character editor - if you know the right number. There might be a list floating around somewhere...
  6. This is one of those crimes, where in Exile the town would have forgotten after a while, but in Avernum the game never forgets. I guess this is more realistic, but rather annoying nonetheless. Not all posts need have a point, but all points should have a post.
  7. Church of the divine thud, or something? Oh that's right, Temple of the Crossed Blades. I knew it was something like that.
  8. 1) Re Bolt of Fire, it doesn't do anything that a decent pole weapon can't do, and better. 2) Re Anama not talking freely to anyone outside the Anama, let's remember we're talking about a crisis situation here (plague of disease-bearing cockroaches). Get some perspective. The people of Sharimik are even less friendly - at first they won't let you into their city, for pete's sake. As for Gale, as soon as the mayor claps eyes on you, you're thrown in a prison cell! Give me the Anama any day.
  9. Quote: Originally written by mistica: if you have no probs with your food supply, you can rest outside angel's rest, & check in everyday to see if the old gal's there or not That's precisely what I did, and I've told you what the results were to save you the bother of doing it for yourself...
  10. The spellbook isn't precious, it's rubbish (who ever uses bolt of fire?). Edit: another possible culprit is that well-known criminal element, the Guild.
  11. Curse all and slow group are for sale in Shayder. Major haste is for sale in Sharimik.
  12. That's good advice. The only thing to add - giants aren't difficult to kill, the main problem with them is their attacks do a lot of damage to your PCs. So if you haven't already, invest in some decent armour, defense skill and dexterity.
  13. I voted rotdhizon because (a) very hard to kill and ( very deadly to anything except another rotdhizon. However, as previously stated, as creations rotghroths are actually more essence-efficient than rotdhizons. Edit: Can't spell rot* to save my life.
  14. That's nothing to be proud of. Most of Mondrian's paintings looked like this: Yes, it's just a lot of straight lines and coloured rectangles. Sigh. No wonder modern art consists of a lot of pickled cows... Edit: this is a reply to Mr Thralnai, not Mr Ephesos. He sounded pretty proud of his compatriot.
  15. Proposition. Garzahd is a rubbish wizard. Proof. Suppose, in order to obtain a contradiction, that Garzahd is a really a great wizard. Then he wouldn't be scared of a bunch of adventurers. So he wouldn't need to hide away in the far corner of his fort. And he wouldn't need to create impassable runes to prevent moving around his own fortress. And he wouldn't need to create a massive barrier outside the fort to stop people from entering. And he wouldn't need to conceal the coordinates of his fort. Nonetheless, Garzahd does all these things. Furthermore, if he had any intelligence whatsoever, Garzahd would simply cast three kill spells on anyone wearing a ring of will - thus neutralising any potential threat. Yet he doesn't. To sum up then, Garzahd's behaviour is inconsistent with being a great wizard. He's actually a bit of a wimp, and relies on his summoned demons to defend him. Thus is demonstrated the desired contradiction. QED Next week: Erika is less of an arch-enchantress than a sub-mumbler.
  16. I think the chasm drake one is a "spare" crystal - there are actually 6 very close to the cavern itself. You've probably just missed a secret passage. EDIT: If you're really stuck, buy the hint book.
  17. This is just unsupported speculation. There is no evidence to suggest that this unfortunate mage was executed by the Anama - it is far more likely to have been a rival mage. Any Empire that requires magical enchantments to keep itself in power is undesirable, and we'd be better off without it. If on the other hand the Empire is fair and virtuous, then it will survive without the need for magery.
  18. After a bit of testing, I think she's only there every third day. When I tried it just now, Shahpur was in Angel's Rest on days 48 and 51 but I couldn't find her on days 49 and 50. I suggest you rest outside AR until you reach a day whose number is divisible by 3.
  19. There's a fletcher in Delan (pretty average prices). Edit: Archery may be useless most of the time, but it still comes in handy whenever there are chasms.
  20. What does divinely touched do, exactly? When I tried it in Avernum 1 it just seemed to give my PC lots of once-a-day abilities that I never wanted to use. Does it have other benefits as well?
