So there really is no place like Oglai, and not even Oglai.

irony : the use of words to express something other than and especially the opposite of the literal meaning.

Q: When is the game coming out? A: Not soon enough. To my knowledge, Spiderweb doesn't usually give an actual release date; the game will be ready when it's ready and that's when it'll be released. In the past we sometimes were told which month (and experience shows it could come out on the 2nd of the month or equally the 29th) but that's as precise as it gets.

Delicious Geneforge

"secluded" for "excluded"? I think -X- has already been got at by the Thing. Cue scary music... -
Yup, I ripped through the shaper crypt with terror vlish. I guess I'll just have to wait and see about GF4...

Yes that's a point, is it still the case that vlish are over-powered in GF4? They are ridiculously effective in the trilogy.

Drayk kebabs - a forbidden delicacy, and all the better for it. -

The only problem I have with range is accidentally clicking next to a character rather than on it, wasting action points by running around, which is my own stupid fault. The hints about Geneforge 4 have been very encouraging. It sounds like it will be an excellent game.

Do you think Rentar really has a heart of gold? How improbable.
-
I guess in that case I would be allowed a fish? Hooray for nudity! Not too keen on giving up spells, though. That would make the game impossible, wouldn't it?

I really like the geologist idea. Not so keen on the gynaecology idea, though I forget, does Avernum 4 also have anything else collectible, other than stones, steel & herbs?
-
I'm looking for reasons to replay it. Please provide suggestions...

There are several demons in patrick's basement. Go back, kill another one and try again.

I agree, the avernum 1-3 monster graphics were a bit of step backwards from the exile ones. Only in Avernum 4 did the monsters start looking a bit more distinctive, with the increased screen resolution. I particularly like the eyebeast graphic, it's one of my favourites from the geneforge series. I have no problem with recycling successful graphics from one series to the next.

There are also a couple of fights with these guys called the Darkside Loyalists, who seem to be some anti-Avernum splinter faction of the Empire.

It relates to doors locked with marginal difficulty. It's all about whether you can unlock the door using lockpicks alone or whether you need to spend spell points to cast unlock. (Actually this may not matter in A4 where spell points are not appreciably scarce. It matters more in Geneforge where essence is more limited.) I am always in a dilemma whether to buy some mechanics - avoid casting unlock spells & maybe escape some fights - or whether just to buy more intelligence giving me more spell casting capacity and hopefully the ability to just walk over everybody. This dilemma is crystallised more when the same character is lockpicker and unlock caster. I like dilemmas.

Cowardly picking off enemies one by one from a distance was definitely a good strategy in GF1-3. But I thought from Jeff's earlier comments that he was trying to emphasise more group combat in GF4?

Let's just leave it that for some reason, which I can't quite put my finger on but which involves character building, I prefer the mage/lockpicking combination. It's even better in Geneforge with living tools. Edit: fixing the quote

I have some sympathy with most of this, but not all of it. For instance, I think the Geneforge engine and look and feel are here to stay. I am also quite happy for lockpicking to be rolled up with the mage skill - it makes you choose between spell energy and skill points. And I really quite liked the continuous mapping in A4, who cares if Silvar and Fort Avernum are a little bit close together, it just made the world so much more believable. I often used to wish Geneforge was done the same way.

I did it to earn the money for the blademaster skill. In A3, the trading runs are like regular quests - if you trade enough then the quest is completed and the merchants won't buy anymore.

I'd say the source of most negative comments is that people expected (maybe unrealistically) something a little bit more like Avernum 2 and a little bit less like Geneforge 3, in terms of engine, linearity and plot originality. That doesn't make it a bad game per se but maybe a little disappointing, for those who had such expectations. Its replay value is also reduced compared, to previous games. In difficulty terms, I would say that Avernum 4 is considerably easier to beat than Geneforge 2 or 3 and more like a regular Avernum trilogy game in that respect. I think A4 is a perfectly good introduction to spiderweb games if you are a new player, and a respectable continuation if you've only played the Avernum trilogy. Where it maybe doesn't work so well is for those who have been playing Geneforge (they've seen too much of it before) and for the Bladesoholics, who have more esoteric tastes (if the scenarios released so far are any indication).
