Hatchling Cockatrice Mea Tulpa
It's not impossible. Maybe I'm misremembering, but I think there has already been a case (maybe an Avernum compilation CD?) where you could get discounts both for Exile purchases and Avernum purchases. Magnificent Ornk nikki.
The new game will probably have the same registration system as Avadon, since Jeff blogged about liking that system pretty recently. Yeah, it can be broken, but pretty much any system of locking games can be. The idea isn't to make it impossible to break, because pirates will never pay anyway; it's all about getting the honest players to remember to pay. To that end, a system that's just difficult enough to stop a player long enough to reach for their credit card is all Jeff will need. Anything more complicated else is a waste of his time, and complex registration systems run the risk of putting off potential customers. Just a reminder, while we're at it. Talk of illegal activites (and that includes software piracy and keygenning) isn't allowed here. Nobody has done anything wrong yet, but this thread could easily go that way. Just to clarify the intent of the rule: talking about illegal activities in the abstract is fine. Talking about plans to commit or committing specific illegal acts on this forum is not, and will probably lead to banning. In this case, talking about keygens is okay, and even discussing a keygen-proof system as a suggestion is fine, so no foul here. Where the line is if we talk about how to acquire or use keygens to crack software.

Ineffable Wingbolt Necris Omega
Jeff's just one programmer vs. an army, nay, a LEGION of hackers - people who'll do it, not necessarily because they want a free copy of the game, but because the idea is like climbing a mountain. They do it because they can and because it's there. Jeff himself has written extensively on the subject, and for all intents and purposes he seems to have made peace with the inevitable. His goals now are more making his system more convenient for people to purchase rather than elaborate anti-piracy schemes, which is why he's kiboshed the "send me your code and I'll send you the key" idea because that was a hassle/too complicated for some customers. Reports on the success of Avadon are very positive, so I'm certain he'll continue the trend. Really, as long as Jeff's games are good enough to buy and get enough exposure, he'll do just fine, piracy be damned.

Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
What's interesting is reading from people that acknowledge that they pirate software still wanting to get paid for their own work. In one case all the pirate did was install software for people to lazy to do it themselves. I mean why should they get paid for no creative input. At least they should get minimum wage at most. Why is this surprising? Most software pirates are not software communists (although some certainly are). Most of them are just people who are willing to give a chunk of their morality over to "might makes right."
Hatchling Cockatrice Alorael at Large
There are many convoluted rationales supporting and ethical codes legitimizing piracy. Some are probably heartfelt. Some are rationalizations. Some are lies. If you're the developer, it doesn't matter. —Alorael, who is most interested in the pirates who claim that they're acting on the right to try before you buy. That's not entirely unreasonable... except when the games already have substantial demos. It's easy not to want to buy a game once you've finished it. I really can't see Jeff selling this for $5 (due to the double discount), but the wording is ambiguous enough that you might get away with it. I can't recall any precedent, but that's not to say there hasn't been one.

Hatchling Cockatrice Mea Tulpa
Let's be fair, it is not 3 versions of the same game. It is 3 games with mostly the same plot and story elements and somewhat similar mechanics. These games are actual re-makes, not just re-releases with slightly shinier interfaces. Being able to try before I buy is the number one reason that I've bought more games from Spiderweb than any other producer. I am always fearful at dropping $20-60 on a new game that could very suck, eventually talking myself out of most games unless I know someone who has it and can experience it first hand. The demo parts of the spiderweb games are perfect in providing an accurate sample of game play and drawing you in so that you feel you need to buy it to find out how everything plays out. Ineffable Wingbolt MMXPERT-seraph of thermodynamics
the thing is, 60% of pirates are people who for some reason, cannot buy the games, even if they do have the money for it. and yes, I am a pirate, but not when it comes to Jeff's games. Garrulous Glaahk MissSea
I genuinely felt bad when I paid only $10 for this game (having received the aforementioned Avernum discount). Looking back, I shouldn't have said I had other games -- $20 is a STEAL for a game this involved and intense. And considering the fact that I guilted my in-laws into getting my husband a new laptop with the thinly held belief that he needs it for school and "why don't you get him a MacBook because Macs are SO much better" JUST so I could play this game now, instead of three to six months down the road, I should really be giving Jeff twice as much. In the interest of giving back ... and swinging the karma meter back my way. MissSea

Easygoing Eyebeast *i
I always pay the premium rate for his games, even though I know there are cheaper options elsewhere. Some might call me stupid, but I find it in my own self-interest to chip in what I consider a fair price asked for if it helps produce more games. I mean, most economical use of $20 on entertainment I spend.
Kyshakk Koan Skwish-E
I went to the movies with my wife the other day. $20 for two tickets. The movie wasn't even that good. 90 minutes of entertainment for $20 vs (How many hours am I going to get out of AEftP?) for $20. I think we have a clear winner here!
