Easygoing Eyebeast VCH
Is food actually limiting? I started the game looting every piece I could find. Then I got curious from the message after leaving the castle for the 1st time about how food is so important. To test food's importance I stored all that I had at the fissure post, and haven't picked up anything in a long time. When do the effects of no food kick in and what are they? Kyshakk Koan Sss-Chah
if i remember correctly, i think you could die of starvation in exile. that'll probably happen in this game, too.
Hatchling Cockatrice Alorael at Large
The description of food makes it sound more like you get a hefty rebuff for starvation. I don't think Jeff is likely to reintroduce potentially save-ruining death. —Alorael, who hasn't come anywhere close to running out of food in any case. Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
Jeff lenghthen the amount of time after you use your last food and getting a message that because of starvation you will be weaker in combat. I don't know what the negative modifiers are, but they will probably like weaken and curse for to hit and damage.
Magnificent Ornk Ephesos
I'll admit, I haven't tried it. I hoarded food, and badly...
Rotghroth Rhapsody madrigan
Slith shot the food! I haven't noticed, does the food disappear from your pack automatically? Do I have to put food in each character's pack?
Magnificent Ornk Ephesos
It disappears automatically, and no you don't need to distribute it. I had one character pack the snacks and everyone was fine.
Hatchling Cockatrice Lilith
It seems to automatically go for the least valuable food item first, too. Which is nice if you're planning to sell some of your food (it's worth a fair amount of money).
Garrulous Glaahk Fael
I'm still pretty early in my first game, but so far it looks like food's going to be like light was in A5 -- you have to have it, but the game provides so much more than you need and you use it so slowly that it would be extremely difficult to actually run out. Of course, it may be that there's no food at all in later in the game and the stuff you find in the Great Cave is all you'll get for the entire game. But I sort of doubt it. And I'm not sure that it would be all that hard to avoid running out even if that was the case.

Easygoing Eyebeast VCH
Well I'll just continue on with no food and see what happens. I hope Jeff has a warning message somewhere along the line.
Well-Actually War Trall Synergy
Food started out being eaten more often in early versions of the game. Now it's very trivial for you as a soldier. It's meant to be presented as critical in the Avernum world due to the blight, but not to you, as a well-fed soldier. I just carried mushrooms around (the kind you keep finding in the wild) and sold everything else for $$. Occasionally, you will eat. If you aren't running a singleton, allocating one inventory space to food isn't too big a deal. -S-
Easygoing Eyebeast VCH
I was hoping that food would be more important. 6 hours of playing and nothing has changed.
Hatchling Cockatrice Mea Tulpa
I assume that all you have to do to end the starvation effect is pick up a single piece of food and eat it, right? Does it kick in as soon as you are supposed to eat and have no food, or not?
Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
Going back to a friendly town also eliminates the effect.

Easygoing Eyebeast The Mystic
That's how it was in the Exile series. You could be in a town walking towards a food merchant, and still potentially get hit with the starvation effect if you were out of food. Hatchling Cockatrice Alorael at Large
You could also always cast Minor Manna or Manna, so starvation wasn't really a problem after E1. —Alorael, who made judicious use of those lovely spells in Dark Waters. You know, back when waterfalls were actually dangerous. You kids these days have it easy.

Very true; to be honest, starting in E2, those two spells were my party's only food source. I was (and still am) too cheap to buy food for my PCs. Fledgling Fyora Skythyryx
I'm not sure what starvation does to you, but honestly you don't have to worry about it at all. You pickup enough food throughthe game that you'llnever need half of it- in fact, I recommend selling meats, fish, and bread, while keeping fruit and mushrooms. Once you get to the Abyss, there are so many fruit I doubt you'll run out of them for most of the game without going back to fetch more rolls. Also, fort remote cook gives you an additional roll, giving you twice as long between trips if you do sell all food.
Understated Ur-Drakon Earth
it makes char(s) less effective in battle and eventually to death I think..
Hatchling Cockatrice Lilith
I'm pretty sure it's not actually possible to starve to death in A6; hunger is more of a nuisance than a real danger (and intentionally so).
Easygoing Eyebeast Trenton.
I didnt know you had to eat. I thought its somthing to do to boost health, not mandatory.
Hatchling Cockatrice Mea Tulpa
In A4 and A5 and Avadon and Geneforge, yes. A6 is different.
