  1. To be honest, your best option is probably just to use a virtual machine like VMware or VirtualBox to run Exile under an older version of Windows rather than trying to run it under a modern version directly.
  2. The first set of coordinates sets which outdoor section to place the party in. The second set of coordinates sets where in that outdoor section to place them. Also, note that despite its name, the node doesn't immediately place the party outdoors: it only affects where they'll be placed next time they leave town. So if it doesn't immediately appear to do anything, that's normal. There isn't actually a way to directly transfer the party from a town to outdoors using a special node: the best you can do is move them to a location where they have no choice but to leave town. For further information about special nodes, you might find this guide helpful.
  3. Also, if you want to know where it's listed so you can check what training you've already received, it appears in your special items list.
  4. move_to_new_town only works if activated by stepping on a special encounter rectangle, not through dialogue, and you can't place special encounter rectangles through scripts.
  5. It's a Windows program, so you'd have to install Windows 3.1 (or 95, but that's more of a pain) inside of DOSBox, but in theory it should be possible.
  6. fair enough, i've gone ahead and spoiler-tagged part of that answer. there's lots of examples of Shaper authorities being useless at their jobs even from g2 though. and i mean what they did with sucia in g1 didn't exactly work out either
  7. It's been a while, and unfortunately Strategy Central doesn't seem to mention this one, but I think you're right and you need beautiful crystals.
  8. on the other hand, the fact that the Shapers are consistently hopeless at enforcing their own laws doesn't exactly inspire confidence that they're the right people to be in charge
  9. well, "opposite" sort of implies that they exist on opposing ends of a spectrum encompassing the entirety of moral thought, when in fact there are other systems that are more or less orthogonal to both. for example there's virtue ethics, which argues that by focusing on how to decide what to do in specific moral dilemmas you're already on the wrong track and you're better off focusing on developing positive character traits in yourself so that making good decisions will come naturally to you. that still raises the question of how to decide what counts as a virtue but it does seem to be a distinctly different approach
  10. While in combat, hit A on your keyboard or click the attack button before selecting a target.
  11. another thought: you could limit the number of guesses each poster is allowed to make per day so there are still ones left for other people. this would also encourage more thoughtful answers over scattershot guessing if that's what you want
  12. 409. Recursive Bow {inscribed} -- Artifact from Godelescherband inscribing is a game mechanic from popular roguelike angband that allows you to inscribe notes on an item in your inventory for various convenient purposes. many variants of angband have been made and most bear titles with the suffix "-band". Godel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid is a book that discusses, among other things, the role of recursion in logic, computer science, psychology and various other fields of human knowledge
  13. 367. Piety Nor Wit -- Moving finger immunities, according to Omar Khayyam ok so this one is a reference to poet Omar Khayyam's Rubaiyat, or more specifically, to Edward Fitzgerald's translation thereof: "The Moving Finger writes: and, having writ, / Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit / Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line, / Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it."
  14. 379. Solipsissimus -- The loneliest philosopher solipsism is the philosophical position that holds that only oneself exists or can be known to exist. the worst thing about being a solipsist is that if you're right, nobody will ever agree with you
  15. 386. Clash of Crayons -- MMO aimed at an untouched demographic Clash of Clans is a massively multiplayer online game (an MMO) available for mobile platforms. the joke here, which i will proceed to ruin by explaining it, is the idea of an MMO marketed to toddlers, who draw with crayons. possibly this is a jab at the perceived deleterious effects of the rise of freemium mobile gaming on the games industry or possibly it's just an amusing mental image
  16. 396. Beards -- Another attempt to live up to that first "psychosexual" proclamation, maybe when avadon was still in the planning stages jeff made a blog post about it where he mentioned it was (loosely (very loosely)) inspired by seeing an opera about noted bad husband bluebeard, which was apparently described in a review he read as having psychosexual elements. a beard can mean one of two things: the thing you can grow on your face, or a spouse married for the purpose of concealing homosexuality. avadon character redbeard, in addition to having the first kind of beard, has three "wives" but doesn't appear to be in an actual romantic relationship with any of them. now i'm not saying redbeard's gay, but it would explain some things, wouldn't it
  17. 399. DLRO REDR WEHT AHSI -- Grave puzzle fit for a hardtype okay so in popular 90s video game Final Fantasy VI there's a puzzle involving gravestones with inscriptions that spell out ERAU QSSI DLRO WEHT: "THE WORLD IS SQUARE" backwards. this is like that only it spells out THE WORLD IS HARDER and also the order is mixed up a little, making it harder to decipher, hence hardtype. "hardtype" itself is also a final fantasy reference: Final Fantasy IV had an "Easytype" version that simplified the game, leading the original release to be nicknamed "hardtype" by comparison, and some other unofficial difficulty hacks of games to be named "hardtype" by analogy. incidentally, the version of ff4 originally released outside of Japan is widely believed to be the same as the Japanese Easytype version, but that's a misconception: there are some similarities between the two, but also some ways in which the English-language release is closer to the original (notably, the final boss's sprite, which was changed for Easytype, is still the same as in the original version). i got off on a tangent there a little bit i think
  18. I think the problem is clear enough just from your description. Plus it's usually better to not send attachments unless they're asked for first, to reduce the chance of your email getting accidentally caught in a spam filter.
  19. That might be for the best. I'm fairly sure it should be just a matter of finding and deleting a preference file somewhere, but the difficulty is finding it. There's one more thing I can think of to check: when you searched for the Avernum 4 Settings file on your hard drive, did you have the search settings set to find hidden files?
  20. i mean, for one thing he's basically a walking retcon to avoid Chevyn inheriting the throne
  21. The Steam version might store data differently. In that case, your easiest option might just be to uninstall (right-click the game in Steam and select "Delete Local Content") and reinstall. I'm not sure if this will preserve your saved games so you should probably back them up first if you do this.
  22. I think your best bet is to delete the file where the game's settings are stored: this will reset all of your preferences to the default but will leave your saved games intact. Look for a file called "Avernum 4 Settings": it should be inside the Avernum 4 Data folder, which in turn should be inside the Avernum 4 folder, which if you've got the Steam version should be inside the "common" folder inside the SteamApps folder inside your Steam library. Or it might be easier to just search your hard drive for a file with that name. Anyway, find and delete the Avernum 4 Settings file and hopefully that will solve your problem.
  23. Do you remember the exact error message you got when trying to open the page? It could be some kind of transient server error, in which case it might go away if you try again in a little while. If you email Spiderweb directly at support@spiderwebsoftware.com they might be able to help you further.
  24. You don't actually need to any more. They've been 100% free of charge for a while now. If you're having issues with the game not letting you continue without registering, make sure you've downloaded the latest versions from Spiderweb's website. If you just want to give Spiderweb some money by way of support, feel free to buy one of their newer games.
  25. Having those options is normal: if you've paid attention to the dialogue about the ritual, you should have enough information to perform it. It's a small puzzle. If you still can't figure it out, let me know and I'll spoil you on the solution.
