  1. There isn't a good way to delete saved files. You can overwrite them with new data either through playing the game or copying blank files from a version where a game hasn't been saved. When copying files you have to remember that the first slot is save0 and that quicksave is save18 and autosave is save19. If you use up all your slots, the game starts saving in the first slot when you don't specify a slot.
  2. I think in appearance it's a color difference. The main drawback is that like exploding roamers, they explode for damage when they die or get absorbed. You don't want to be next to them when that happens. The exploding kyshakks are summoned by the Titan in ur-drakon form and are in the northwest corner of the Titan hall and also there are three in the section before near the electrified fields. There are three unstable wingbolts guarding the drakon's lab in Khima-Uss in the southwest corner.
  3. It varies, in later parts of the game you can use more canisters before you lose options. You don't need to use that many canisters to have a good game and Thuryl played it without any canisters.
  4. I don't think you have access to enough canisters before you encounter Dinitia or the others that you start having anger issues. By not having canister rage you can use your leadership to put them in their place (collect experience) and then attack them when they aren't expecting it (more experience). Ignore ET, he has been using canisters too much and no longer has any empathy for anyone that can't be used to help him get ahead.
  5. If you are looking for normal then you are in the wrong place. Dikiyoba refer to herself in third person isn't that strange compared with Alorael changing his public displayed name every day, Lenar Labs with his alter ego the Silent Assassin, etc.
  6. You meet a lifecrafter, Burkes, down in Chickweed Bridge who learned some shaping for artilas the old fashioned way so he could teach you. There are mages who want to get Shaper texts so they can learn how to shape and advanced mage spells that are restricted. There are also the comments from GF1 that the serviles in the Taker area had learned the basic training that Shapers in general have to learn. This allows the Shapers to use their minds to cast spells and shape using essence.
  7. The minimal party at the end is a drakon and a gazer or wingbolt. I know from experience. You can use all that extra essence to buff up your creations. But really quantity is somewhat better than quality since with mass energize you get more attacks per round. Even if they do a little less damage the attacks mount up and you can go after more targets. You might lose a creation, but you can kill more opponents in a single round before they even get to attack.
  8. Avernum 4 seems to be the most tempermental of the games in terms of system freezing crashes even on Mac systems. There seems to be no single explanation for why it happens. Some of the ones that have been proposed involve the game not liking to share resources with other programs, corruption of files, it's just that time of the month.
  9. You are seeing the difference between scripted encounters and AI controlled situations. Certain characters are scripted to always survive because they are needed elsewhere. The game still doesn't have a way to let NPCs that are spies and should be friendly as you slaughter their enemies stay friendly.
  10. No testing ground or Sharon's Grove type of place this time. Sandros Mine has an expert area on the west side that leads to the Shaper's Trueweave that helps creations sort of like the ring/band. Jeff doesn't always repeat himself.
  11. Game on hold while I finish some other ones.
  12. I told you ET that serviles learned about banditry from a human book back in GF1. Besides there are plenty of human bandits in GF4 (Jadetree and company). The serviles going insane to learn magic seems to be a very peculiar sect trying to shortcut the process. There are some serviles in GF1 that seem to be on the verge of gaining spell ability without the insanity. Humans weren't a whole lot saner when they rushed the training process.

And...so...how's it going? And how are XP working out? -S- After doing the slimes, roaches, cave murders, orb theft, Golddale mines, and a few minor quest, I'm at level 50. XP is easy and until I reached Bigail almost any quest XP reward would give me a level. I had to redo the game since I wanted to have less melee damage by increasing my dodging. Most monsters have 5% or less chance to hit in melee. Spellcasters are nasty so I need enough endurance (about 5-6) so my health will help me last through several rounds in case I can't heal. I hope this time the character will be able to face the troglo altar demons without multiple save and reloads.

  15. The only problem with getting a CD of the new game is if there is an update. I remember for Avernum 4 sending away for the first CD version and then still having to download all the updated versions and patches, I hope Jeff keeps the random monster encounters from the earlier version, There weren't that many, but they did provide a little extra experience.
  16. I'm currently trying A3 as human fragile bones and totally inept for a 70% experience bonus. I'm running a normal version and an Anama offshoot starting at Bigail. It depends how much of the game you know and how good you are at figuring out how to do the game without backup. I ran A4 with a singleton nephil divine touch and the priest trait without too much trouble and also ran human elite warrior divine touch and nephil natural mage divine touch through most of the game before getting burned out. The worst handicap game that was posted was doing the demo without having any spellcasting ability. Only weapons and items. It won't work for the whole game since you burn through items too quickly and there are those slimes in the Honeycomb that are only really damaged by magic.

  18. Bad Synergy. Show some self control. Save it for General.
  19. Wingbolts are magic class, tier 4. For the first two chapters a flock of fyoras or a swarm of artilas will do just fine. Cryoas are nice, but they have to bite shades and use up essence. Drayks are great general purpose creations that will make it through the remainder. Wingbolts are nice, but take a lot of essence and will run out of energy. Kyshakks make great shields with their massive health. If you just want one creation then get a drakon. Gazers don't deal out enough damage in fights with ur-drakons and will run out of energy. Never tried an eyebeast.
  20. I'll agree with Alorael on what is better. Exile still has a better spell list. The dialog system changed, but it pretty much had the same content. Avernum 3 had those nice caches to find.
  21. Great news on how far along you are. For those that haven't bought Nethergate there is some incentive to buy now and have something to do until summer. Since there will be new material you will have something familar and something to look forward to seeing.
  22. The Shapers will want the idea of the Geneforge and canisters gone forever. No one should know that there is any way but under Shaper control to learn shaping and even magic. The idea that a Rebellion almost succeeded will only encourage others to try and learn from the mistakes.
  23. Each servile tech adds 5 to mechanics. The lowest I've seen in the Fens is 15. Most of the mines in Monarch's Realm below Northern Grosch are 25 difficulty, but there is a route with 20. The worst traps are 30, but the chest with 30 difficulty doesn't have anything of real value. Some of the mines release creations like a kyshakk in Grosch Pits near where Kryryk is held.
  24. GF1 has serviles getting the idea of banditry from a human book. Some creations just want to be left alone. The serviles of Sucia Island would probably resolved their differences eventually when one faction died out. Since the Takers were being poisoned by a sealed lab, they were more likely to have been the ones.
