Some things that fall into this range: - attacking off-duty soldiers - attacking military factories - attacking railroads, bridges, and other infrastructure that can be used by both soldiers and civilians - attacking power plants, machine shops, and other industry that has both military and civilian use - kidnapping/killing political leaders - kidnapping/killing relatives of leaders - kidnapping/killing relatives of soldiers - kidnapping/killing regular civilians None of these things fall under the definition of "gentleman's war", but at least some of them (attacking off-duty soldiers and dual-use infrastructure) are necessary for any meaningful resistance against militarily-superior enemy.
  2. If I remember correctly, you can't do it in combat mode.
  3. While I don't normally play on torment, it seems pretty obvious that 0-intelligence creations are usually worse for any level. If you can't control your creations, you loose all tactical advantage you have as a smart human against a dumb AI and have to rely purely on firepower. The gain in firepower from not buying two points of intelligence is almost never enough to compensate for loss of tactical advantage. Yes, you can do well with 0-intelligence creations. However, in most cases you'd do even better with creations you can control. Quote: Originally written by GoodCanisters: ... EDIT: Quote fixing. It was unsuccessful. To get your quotes to work, make sure the closing tag (word "/QUOTE" in brackets) is at the end of the text you are quoting.
  4. Did you join any of the fractions? If you did, ask your fraction leader for instructions. If you didn't, go to Loyalist Encampment area and talk to the loyalist shapers there. Once you've fulfilled all instructions from your leader (or loyalist leader if you aren't allied with anybody), go to the place where game began and leave through the exit area to the south. If you never joined any factions and failed to kill some of the people loyalist leader wants you to kill, you will find the ending to be very unsatisfactory.
  5. You get equally semi-random text whenever you Google anything. The text you see under the search result link contains just a few words of context for your search term, rather than any kind of description. In this case "Drakon Fortress" is the Alt-text for image at the start of the first paragraph, so Google, viewing the page in text-only mode, sees those words as the start of the first sentence.
  6. Are we just making up amusing cheat effects here? If so... skinbrightassunlight - Makes you completely canister-crazed, regardless of number of canisters you've consumed. All dialogue options become "(Attack)", "Die rogue scum!(Attack)", and "MUAHAHAHA(Attack)". Iamcool - Turns you into Drakon, enabling the use of Drakon Geneforges from later games, with Geneforge-using Gf1 endings. Imcool - Turns you into an ornk, disabling further use of cheat codes.
  7. Another bit of game advice is that doors requiring rediculous amounts of living tools aren't meant to be opened. (They often contain either quest rewards or faction-specific areas.) As for using the editors/trainers, simply use the links in forum header to download them. Then follow instructions. (You have to replace some files in Geneforge/Data folder on your computer with the files you download. Then start the game and interact with sign/book/person who contains the editor. (See instructions for details.))

  9. It's not a bug, it's an undocumented feature.
  10. The idea sounds intriguing. Unfortunately, the game isn't as easily modifiable as it might seem. You can add quests by changing existing dialogue and area scripts. (This is how character editors work.) However, as far as I know, you can't add anything to the map, or integrate completely new scripts. Adding a few quests might be a fun challenge, but don't try anything too ambitious until you get a good idea of what you can and can't modify.
  11. Talking about staying away to avoid spoilers, please don't include spoilers in thread titles. (For example "What did you think about [important character]'s death?" could be a spoiler even to people who just look at the forum's main page.)

Do not meddle in the affairs of Drayaks, for you are crunchy and taste good with Ketchup. (I hope I remembered that quote correctly.)
  13. The next thing you know, we'll be forming an exploratory committee to research the approaches towards selecting the most suitable venue for appointing the designated official, or at least authorized, topic starter with the limited privileges of opening up the discussion of the topic in question in the venue agreed upon in prior deliberations.
  14. I prefer silence while playing games. (Or doing anything else for that matter.) I turn on my PC speakers only if I want to listen to something online, or if I want to hear what sounds a game has. I might have radio in the background if a game is particularly mindless or a radio program particularly good, but it's a distraction, rather than enhancement of playing experience.

I'm not in town now. I'm in the beginning of part 2 below many waterfalls. Could you explain? In Exile/Avernum terminology "town" refers to any area that is not part of the overland map, including dungeons, caves, etc. If you have a button to enter/leave combat mode, you are in a "town" if you don't have such a button, you are "outdoors". PS You can scroll the screen by using "look" command and clicking on the border of play area. This way you can see what is attacking you. And, as Alorael said, if you aren't in combat mode any breath, firebalt, or similar attack will hit all party members.
  16. I always play the games on normal difficulty, because I can't enjoy the role-playing aspect of a game if I am too conserned with game mechanics. Once I get deep enough into game mechanics to play on highest difficulty, the game turns into a bunch of numbers, and I already have other games that are intended to be just a bunch of numbers.
  17. The only other thing I can think of is that, if I remember correctly, Item Lore is checked when the item is generated. So increasing it afterwards will have no effect on the items already in your inventory. (I don't remember whether and how Item Lore affects the items that are already in the room before you kill anything.)
  18. Quote: Originally written by How: Quote: Originally written by Thahd Lemonade: The problem is that Item Lore is so expensive, in gold but mainly in skill points. At FOUR skill points per point of Item Lore, it's easily the game's worst value. (Well, maybe it's better than buying Health directly.) Item Lore is a relatively small convenience, for which you are willing to give up 2 points of Edged Weapons, or 1 1/3 points of Intelligence? Or most of a point in Luck or Priest Spells? Absurd. I have sometimes edited 10 points into my singleton games, just to make monster drops less than totally useless. I just got the registered copy. I raised everyone's Item Lore to 8 as a test and still, several items are not being identified by the party. Very bizarre. It would seem that the stat is useless if it doesn't work with a total party lore of 48. And, I'm talking about low level items still showing up with a ? Those items are probably cursed. It usually takes much higher levels of Item Lore to identify cursed items than to identify normal, or slightly blessed ones.

  20. If I remember correctly, in Geneforge series luck has an effect on chances of getting gems, monster parts, and monster-specific items such as clawbug shield. If the effect on loot is similar in A4, you aren't going to see it until you fight many dozens of battles against monsters that have a chance of dropping rare items affected by Luck. (To give you an idea of rarety I am talking about, in Gf games you could play through entire game without getting some of these creature-specific items, and even with high luck you'd only get a couple throughout the game.)
  21. Quote: Originally written by *i: I've said this before, but personally I'm ready to see something totally new. Don't get me wrong, I like Geneforge and Avernum, but I think it's time for a nice standalone game like Nethergate. I agree. I generally dislike long series, because quality tends to degrade over time and even if it doesn't, I prefer to read/watch/play something new. Even the best story gets stale if it's milked too much. I'll probably try a demo of Gf4, but it would have to be better than any previous games (a very high bar to cross) for me to register it.
  22. The game will start at the funeral of Learned Darian. It will be a festive affair, with lots of drinking and dancing to celebrate his/her life. While you are dancing on Darian's grave, his/her ghost will appear and tell you how to craft the Crystal of Ultimate Knowledge to revive the Awakened and lead them to power. You will spend the first part of the game gathering followers and looking for ingredients of the Crystal of Ultimate Knowledge. A lot of abandoned mines and sealed labs will feature prominently in your search. When all the ingredients are gathered, you will perform the Great Crafting Ritual. Unfortunately, an ill-timed attack by Shaper troops will disrupt the ritual and cause a demon to be summoned instead. After defeating both the demon and the Shaper attack force, you’ll try to use the partially completed crystal, but you’ll get only partial information on how to create Geneforge. The next part of the game will be spent looking for instructions and ingredients necessary to create the Geneforge. During this time you’ll travel through lands more and more ruined by the fighting and teeming with progressively more powerful enemies, so that by the endgame every swamp path will be patrolled by groups of half a dozen Ur-Drakons and Eye-Beasts, or Shaper generals and arch-mages. Finally, you’ll be able to re-create Geneforge and use it to attain godlike power. At this point it would still be possible for Shapers and Rebels to stop you if they’d join their forces, but they continue to fight each other, allowing you to grow an army of super-powerful creations. With this unstoppable army you easily slay Ghaldring and crush the Shaper Council. This is what happens when you let people check all 8 checkboxes.
  23. One reason for relative lack of activity now is that, with the availability of detailed walkthroughs, there are much fewer people asking questions about gameplay. So most discussion centers around strategies and phylosophycal question, and there is only so much you can talk about those things before exhausting the topics. A4 came out more recently, so there are still more things to discuss about it. PS Talking about long tails, my A2 page is still getting several visitors per day, and Nethergate page is getting several visitors per week, so there are still people playing even older Spidweb games.
  24. If I remember correctly, Sharon is talking about the "tunnel" which is a map area leading to the inner valley. So just return to Sharon once you've passed through that area.
