  1. I would like to point out that no one has mentioned listening to new music? There is a lot to explore.
  2. The saved games should be located in your My Documents folder, in a Spiderweb Software folder. For example: C:\Users\Accountname\Documents\Spiderweb Software\ EDIT: Sorry, this seems to not be the case with A4.
  3. My mage template at level 30: 8 melee wep ** buy 2 trained levels 10 hardiness - train only after 10 0 quick action ** buy 2 trained levels 2 lethal blow - train only after 2 15 mage sp ** buy 2 trained levels 8 priest 10 spellcraft - train only after 10 10 resistance - train only after 10 My priest template at level 30 is only a little different: 6 mage spells ** buy 2 trained levels 16 priest 1 arcane Both use + weapon skill items (or buy more training) to reach adrenaline rush.
  4. I read this on a guide here before I played the game. It is not quite capped, the automatic +1 to a skill on level up will still occur.
  5. With that attitude, you won't attract much help. Despite that, I will reply with what I know. The Exile trilogy are very old, and were programed with an architecture which is no longer supported by modern operating systems. You fail to specify what type of computer and operating system you use. Microsoft Windows? Apple Mac OS? Instead of the daunting task of modernizing the code, the games have been completely remade once over already (the original Avernum series) and are being remade for a second time now (A:EFtP); so the original Exile series is available for free on their respective pages on the SpidWeb site. They should run just as they always have on an older computer from the era when they were released. As for using a modern computer, you may be able to run them using a sufficient way to emulate an older computer's environment. That might be accomplished using a virtual machine, or what have you. I suggest reading previous threads, the game pages on SpidWeb, and other sources on the internet to help you if your goal is to run these older games.
  6. Oxymoron, how is that possible? One of my favorite forums unfortunately has one or two moderators who escalate situations by being overly aggressive and using unnecessary tone of language, even to the extent of flaming and trolling, which is against the site rules. Nothing is going to change their behavior unless they leave the site. The culture of a forum is complex and relies on a double coincidence of positive behaviors from moderation and members.
  7. Only adjacency is needed. BTW there are many topics already with hints and tips for new players.
  8. Avernum 1 [nephils n/a] 1. NPC Jay - Elite Warrior - Melee damage, tank, 1 Priest spells early 2. NPC Andrew - Natural Mage - Priest, melee/ranged backup, 3 Mage spells early 3. Mage - Fast on Feet, Natural Mage - Mage, 6 Priest spells early 4. Mage, same as above Avernum 2 1. NPC Becca - Elite Warrior - Melee damage, tank, 1 Priest spells early 2. Nephil Priest - Fast on Feet, Natural Mage - Priest, ranged backup, 3 Mage spells early 3. Nephil Mage - Fast on Feet, Natural Mage - Mage, 6 Priest spells early 4. Nephil Mage, same as above Avernum 3 1. NPC Falko - Elite Warrior - Ranged/tank, 1 Priest spells early 2. NPC Hsska - Natural Mage - Priest, melee backup, 3 Mage spells early 3. Nephil Mage - Fast on Feet, Natural Mage - Mage, 6 Priest spells early 4. Nephil Mage, same as above Haste is the key.
  9. What? What are you trying to say? What are you even talking about?
  10. Most of the examples you gave are reasons why I like A2 more.
  11. There is a point in playing the older ones: if you don't want to wait. Also, if you are like me and prefer the original trilogy's engine.
  12. I use one fighter, one priest, two mages. The priest starts with one mage spells point. The fighter and mages start with one priest spells point. I agree that this is important for the fighter to have, and disagree that it's a waste for a mage since the cost is so low for the flexibility it gives you right at the start. Healing is important given the hitpoints of enemies, which is why I didn't find hard difficulty a breeze in this game. edit: as for the topic title - no love for archers from me!
  13. Yes, portraits are images G1800.BMP through G1823.BMP on my Windows version. Also, G904.BMP has the headshots. Replacing these files will show a different portrait. I assume that you must keep the same dimensions, etc. Backup the originals and give it a try.
  14. Playing again with your experience from the first attempt counts for a lot. I love these games because I find them challenging, and they punish poor strategy. I also prefer the original Avernums 1-3 and BoA. But I enjoyed the newest remake Escape from the Pit. It is a very polished and upgraded version compared to the second series of Avernums 4-6.
  15. Ok. You can use them to get a stronger party. I think that I clear areas at a lower level than you, yes. If you make arbitrary rules that you follow, then others are going to come to different conclusions.
  16. Did you skip Becca with Elite Warrior? She gives a big boost right at the start. I wouldn't recommend taking negative traits, the experience penalty is not a huge deal. The class traits like Natural Mage are very good and Fast on Feet works for everyone. I choose Nephils for speed also. Also, I play with 2 mages, so that has a different party balance. Certainly allows faster damaging spells and summons.

    Which to play

http://spiderwebforums.ipbhost.com/index.php?/topic/19496-confused-on-where-to-start-with-avernum/ http://spiderwebforums.ipbhost.com/index.php?/topic/19445-new-to-spiderweb-software-games/ http://spiderwebforums.ipbhost.com/index.php?/topic/18915-whats-the-correct-playthrough-order-for-avernum-games/ and also the threads about the SpidWeb sales...
  18. I agree, though my first playthroughs in any of these games is always very long, being a bump-into-walls type of player. Length to finish isn't the best measure of content; I've spent much more time playing Avernum 2. Nethergate was never as long for me as an Avernum title, the game world seems pretty tiny after a while.
  19. Whack humans, the paintbrush is mightier than the sword, etc...

    Hello

I have successfully played the original Avernum series, Nethergate Resurrection, and Blades of Avernum, as well as Open Exile in Windows 8.
  21. Almost 11 years being registered, more like 12 since starting as a lurker. More than half of my life. Being in and out means not integrating in the community here, but this is still the only place I've visited repeatedly for more than a couple years. This is a special place also because I grew up with it; this was my most significant introduction to the internet, etc. Can't count
