Understated Ur-Drakon Callie
WoW's monthly fee doesn't seem that bad when you consider the sheer amount of time some people spend playing it. Someone playing 2.5 hours per day is really only paying ~20 cents per hour of gameplay, and there are plenty of WoW players spending more time than that on the game. Rotghroth Rhapsody Artemis~
Since I've helped contribute to the destruction of this thread, let's fix it, shall we? One would have to buy the game, ($20) Choose subscription plan, ($15 for monthly, $14 for a 3 month plan, $13 for a 6 month plan) This would end up as about 70 dollars a year, more or less. And because of one's tendency to become addicted to online gaming, this would end up being very, very expensive for a number of years. Which brings us back to the initial topic. That's still quite cheap compared to actual drugs. I don't think anyone would have to resort to theft or murder for $70 a year.

That was the basis for Les Misearable, where the crime was stealing a loaf of bread.
Hatchling Cockatrice Alorael at Large
A loaf of bread while starving (or while one's nephews and nieces starve) in 19th century France is not quite the same. People commit crimes for less, but they usually aren't forced to. —Alorael, who on the other hand could imagine someone being addicted enough to be forced to steal for hardware, internet connection, utilities, housing, and so on and so forth. At that point, though, this requires quite a lot of imagination and has gone beyond high-functioning video game addiction to dystopian video game addiction. That way you'll have more people able to purchase them, and they'll quickly come back for more. My girlfriend has mentioned starting WoW back up now that she's got some income. I am trying to prevent that.
Ineffable Wingbolt Tirien
Its easy to stop that. All you need is some C4, a taco, and a satanic kitten. Doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out what to do with those. Of course, some of us never played any of the Monkey Island series... Which is a shame, because we only got like two weeks when a bunch of us were playing League of Legends. ...also a shame because I know I can't let myself join them. Addictive personalities are not good for that game.

Ineffable Wingbolt Tirien
I think most spiderwebbers have addictive personalities. At least those of us who post often. I blame the first Avernum trilogy, hunting down all those secret passages really messes with your head.(And gave me carpal tunnel)..

I tend towards completionism, whether it's getting every square of map explored in a borderline ocd fashion, acquiring every familiar in KoL I possibly can, or frantically hoping I can win back what I had lost in KoL's casino games. Yup, that was a pretty bad day.

Buh dum tish! Tunnel....get it. Anyway, I've avoided mmorpgs, mainly because I know I would play for a good while, then grow bored, and not play for a long while. Then any thoughts of resuming later on would result only in me feeling like I've missed so much grinding and looting time, having not played for a bit, that I would be so far behind any of my friends(guild members, companions, whatever you want to call them), and I would only end up feeling frustrated. I choose to fore-go this experience. Besides, I enjoy spending time with real people in real life.

Ineffable Wingbolt Tirien
Heh, I was wondering how long it would take for someone to notice that pun. Also, I feel your pain. I havent been on Guild wars for almost a year now. Then again, I had done pretty much everything there was to do already. Mostly I just feel bad about leaving my guild to be run by my idiotic officers...

Rotghroth Rhapsody RCCCL
I still play Diablo II myself from time to time. Likely about in the same vein as yourself.
Ineffable Wingbolt Tirien
The only MMORPG that ive ever liked is Guild Wars, and thats becuase of the level cap being set at 20. Finally no more wasting all your time grinding just to gain a few levels. Instead, you just have to farm for gold if you want anything good... 200th post! Also made the "All your rabbits are belong to us" my wallpaper.

Articulate Vlish Petoffen
There are a lot of ignorant people who express opinions on the coffee lawsuit based on wrong ASSUMPTIONS that it was just normal 'hot coffee'. This is how proapganda works - a believable lie used to manipulate people, in this case wealth corporations who don't want to be help accountable publicizing this case misleadingly to try to sway public opinion into supporting legislation to cap their liability, which actually punished the public from being able to get fair compensation when wronged, but which they're told is to cut the costs of their products from greedy lawyers getting outrageous awards. As I recall, this lady had her groin skin melted off and skin grafts from other parts of her body required to repair. Now I want you to think a moment about your groin being melted off for spilling coffee. Any problem? The lawsuit made clear the recommended temperature for coffee, and McDonald's profit motive for superheating. It'd be nice if so many people weren't such suckers to fall for this propaganda so easily.
Hatchling Cockatrice Alorael at Large
Not exactly pure profit. McDonald's makes money by moving its products quickly, but customers also have the expectation of instant food and drink. —Alorael, who also isn't sure it's propaganda, exactly. Mostly, the suit seems to have been mocked soundly in the theater of public opinion because it was a lawsuit over hot coffee. Coffee is expected to be hot. The details that made the case worthwhile got lost in humor and mockery on the late night circuit.
Ineffable Wingbolt Tirien
If your going to call people suckers for falling for McDonalds "evil propoganda", then it would have been better to post that on the conspiracy theory thread.
