Easygoing Eyebeast Jerakeen
Does it seem right that giants are big pussycats compared to most Horde sliths? Clearing out Grindstone was a big yawn after doing Formello. Maybe the giants have grown complacent and soft, while the sliths have been breeding and training warriors in secret for decades, but it still seems as if the big guys should be tougher than lizards. Rotghroth Rhapsody Soul of Wit
You could have gone to Grindstone before you went to Formello. They would have been tougher then. But, yeah, they're not the big-G giants that I remember.
Easygoing Eyebeast Jerakeen
Actually not levelling up very often at this point. Even the 26 knowledge brews I got in Tenevra haven't made a huge difference.

Easygoing Eyebeast Jerakeen
I know. I meant that 52 skill points spread between 4 characters only gives you one or two useful skill levels each, so it doesn't make an enormous difference at this stage of the game. Hatchling Cockatrice Lilith
The best thing to do with your knowledge brews is to dump them all on one character and give him 20 Quick Strike or 10 Riposte or something.
Easygoing Eyebeast Jerakeen
I tend to hoard them until I see who needs a couple of extra points to get whatever skill they need next--early in the game it's not always obvious. But by the time you get to Tenevra, hoarding is certainly counterproductive. The point was that the giants are wimpier by any standard than the horde sliths--it's not because my party is stronger. Mind you, the wandering packmasters put up a bit more of a fight. Must be all the exercise.

I went there today too, after having done Formello (but not Tenevra yet; as it is Vanathai-territory I was under the delusion that it is to be saved for after the Sliths…) Well. I just want to second, that the Giants are just big softies, if you have been able to do Formello. The fight in the alchemical lab with the ambulatory goo is still some fun, though…

Thank goodness for Return Life. Would be interesting for a singleton.
Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
As Synergy pointed out you use summoned monsters to keep unstable monsters away from you. Adrenaline Rush provides enough attacks per round to take them out with area attacks.
Rotghroth Rhapsody Kreador
When my entire party dropped dead in an instant the first time I wandered into that shop and charged the slimes, I decided "ranged attacks are good."
Kyshakk Koan Tcheedchee
So did I. I liked how the things kept on exploding the rest of their own kind. Stupid things… Probably a dead end in Avernum evolution anyway…

Sure, unless they're coming at you from two different directions, which they do. I'm just saying it would be tricky, that's all.
Easygoing Eyebeast VCH
For the exploding slimes I just sacrificed my two front fighters. They get full XP because they die after the slimes have exploded. My tactic was send the front two in, then blow up all the slimes with some ranged magic, then cast return life. It was really funny too.
Kyshakk Koan La paix
Death is so much more merciful in these later games! It's not even actually death anymore! You need not do more than walk through a gate or cast a spell/read a scroll to revive anyone unconscious. It can be pretty funny.
Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
That's because players are wimps. Too lazy to reload and fight the battle over or go back to one of the few towns with a healer that will raise them for an overpriced fee. Back in the old days of Exile you had to rearrange equipment to keep the most valuable when a character died dumping his belongings in a bloody pile. After having run out of return life scrolls (sic!), my party decided to go for the 'cheaper' version of blowing the things up from far away. I just had the tank 'out there' to distract the goo from attacking the rest of the party, so they could stay out of the dangerous zone. Rotghroth Rhapsody Kreador
In the room with the ogre mage and the three slimes, I did have my main fighter quaff an invulnerability elixir, charge, and blow everything up around him. It was a lot of fun to see him standing in the wreckage.
