  1. I feel like zombie horror has been played out already and Lovecraftian horror thrives on more audiovisual oomf than Jeff can provide. But there's one thing that Jeff already made that comes close to survival horror: Avernum 2, chapter 2. Play up the need for food and other supplies and the isolation in a hostile, unknown world does all the rest.

—Alorael, who thinks the idea dovetails nicely with Jeff's vague stated pondering about an Avernum prequel. The First Expedition would be survival horror, but early Avernite settlement would also come very close.

Keeping in mind that Lofcraftian horror is named after the (illustrationless) BOOKS written br H.P. Lovecraft, I don't think audiovisual oomf is really a requirement. The vagueness lent by limited graphics might even improve the atmosphere, since each player could project their individual fears onto the same template.

  2. I'm pretty sure Bernard's behavior being jerkish is, well... the point. It's one of the earlies and hardest clues of what the outcome of Barzite Philosophy would be. When everyone and their mother has power, there would undoubtedly be those who would use it and abuse it to get a leg on those weaker. People ARE that awful and when power is handed out indiscriminately some of those horrible people would get that power. There's no avoiding it.

Yes, but who cares about that when YOU (yes, you) could be one of those with the power?

  3. I get the feeling the game won't be out before November at least. Especially with the lack of updates on Jeff's blog. I remember when Escape from the Pit and Avadon were coming out, the blog was active with talk about the upcoming games and stuff. Haven't seen any update on Jeff's blog for aeons now

    So . . . The 5th of November maybe? :p

Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose.

  4. point of order: a macguffin is a specific kind of plot device object that doesn't do anything in itself, but is important to the plot because of who wants it. if the properties of the object are important to the plot in their own right (that is, if you couldn't swap it out for a similarly rare and valuable object and have the plot still make sense), it's definitionally not a macguffin

A Macguffin doesn't have to be useless, just a sought after plot object, and the OP's definitely wasn't, so that definition is sort of inapplicable.

  5. The Black Ka'kari from Night Angel. It shifts into any shape desired, grants you invisibility, night/soul vision, eats hostile magic (and anything else), accelerated healing, eternal youth, and it resurrects you even if you you somehow manage to die. Infinite times. Plus, it can talk to you, and has a snarky sense of humor. What more could a man want?

  6. Geneforge. I'd have the least chance of dying there.

You all go into battle if you want. Screw that.

Least chance of dying? With the endless fighting between rebels and shapers, not to mention rogue creations? I 'm pretty sure life in the Empire is safer than that.

  7. If you were to be teleported without warning into the world of Avernum, Geneforge, or Avadon, without any special advantages, which one would you prefer to go to and what would you do there?

I'd go to Avadon, because I harbor no illusions about my ability to master magic or shaping, and Avernum food is intolerable. I'd become a warrior fighting for whoever equpped me the best, a mercenary perhaps, and experience the thrill of battle, while amassing wealth for my eventual retirement.

  8. Probably a Drakon, since they're the creations that are closest to humans in the series, come on, they were shaped to imitate Shapers! :D

Drakons were shaped to be superior to the Shapers, so they're more analogous to some sort of superhuman race, like homo sapiens superior in the X-men comics. I think Serviles are the closest creations to humanity.
