It may be that the game doesn't have adequate privileges to write/update save files. Where have you installed the game ? If you had installed it in your Program Files, and your Windows is anything beyond XP, you could try installing the game in a non-protected location like C:\Genes or D:\Genes. Edit : Oops, just remembered that the save files go to the docs folder. So this won't work.
