  1. Sorry to interrupt the xp discussion, but Crenshaw (the wine seller besides Camp Samuels) also has a bottle of gremlin wine in his bedroom trunk. And the bandits in the Honeycomb (led by Hosharr) have a bottle of gremlin wine as well. That is all.
  2. Spiderweb games are different then other games.....they have their own style and personality. I think it's mostly the writing and the plots, it's not the engine or graphics. Wow, just realized my title has changed, now I'm a Shock Trooper!
  3. Oh the chitrachs were very annoying....so many of them, I was glad when the Eastern Gallery was finished. And then they were in the Great Cave too! Another annoying part was Rentar Ihrno's fortress and having to avoid all those pylons....I hate pylons And I missed the boats....but I also have lots of fun parts in Avernum 4 as well, I loved having pylon travel for the first time, and it was so cool seeing Motrax's and Khoth's old caves and it was great fighting the shades. I love that part it Almaria where you can't get in and the whole town is hostile and you have to go through the tunnel and sneak past the shade in the town. Also when you bring the crystal box back to Houghton.
  4. I totally agree Ociporus! I enjoy each of the games for various reasons, and definitely will replay them on occasion. I too enjoy the quick fire egg and bringing down the barrier between the giants and the troglos. Also, going after Garzhad in A2 and meeting the Vahnati council for the first time. There are so many great moments in all five of the games. They have cost me lots of sleep as well I think certain people should stop arguing because you can't change someone's mind when it's made up. And what does it matter? We're all different anyways. Just because people like games that others don't like, is no reason to insult anybody.
  5. I use the character editor to bring my party back to life, unless I'm outside in which case I reload the game. Also, save before you click on a body at the end of a corridor, or drink from a pool in a tunnel, or explore a cave in the wall. One of the best things about Avernum is that there's so much stuff to do, you can do tons of training before you tackle the hard parts.
  6. I think it was the attacking that made me fail the test before. I noticed that when I had everyone hasted, and attacking twice each round there was one round where the shade didn't attack me. That's why it says "you did not stand sufficient damage" because of the round where it doesn't attack. Once I shielded, healed as necessary, and stood still I passed.
  7. I had a weird thing happen with this one too, I kept on failing the test because I was attacking the shade and maybe using Mass Healing. Once I shielded myself, only hasted my priest and didn't use the spell mass healing (and didn't attack the shade) it was fine and I passed the test.
  8. I use the mouse all the time when playing games and such....I'm not good at the keyboard shortcuts, although I do know how to type. Somestimes I wish I was better at using the keyboard for games, as it's probably faster.
  9. Did the story you read involve one of the mages wearing a Vahnatai cloak and getting targeted by the enemy because it was so bright? And then he/she (don't remember) had to be raised from the dead after the battle? If so, it was the same story I read. I wish I could find it again!
  10. I like the new "lightswitches", plus the fact that you could tell where there was hidden rooms because of wall protrusions. I find it's much harder in Avernum 5 to tell where secret rooms are because so much of the automap is empty.... What I mean is, when in a dungeon in Avernum 1-3 the large empty space at the top right/middle etc of the automap would have a secret room or something. In Avernum 5 it would just be an empty space. I hope that made sense... I would like to have a combination of head bumping and lightswitches for the next game, or maybe a lightswitch that actually makes light! Wait, do they have electricity in Avernum?
  11. I use everything except for slowing wands and scrolls.....don't really see the need for them. Even my mage hardly ever uses the Slow spell. Spray Acid and Control Foes scrolls might get used a couple of times, but I don't really find them very effective. For potions I use everything, and I know you didn't ask about it but I don't use First Aid Kits cause they don't work very well. But maybe it's only me.
  12. ezAndy: how can you read the Song of Susannah without reading the other volumes? I could never come into a series in the middle, unless it was a standalone story. To Thuryl, Sleeping Dragon, etc: I wasn't really apologizing, I just assumed that Iffy was a young teenage male (as so many are on these boards) and assumed he wouldn't want to read about females.....that was a lot of assumptions on my part, I apologize for that.
  13. I don't find them boring, they introduce us to the main character, and give us backstory. All books can't go straight to the action. I guess it's just a matter of taste really.
  14. Read Lloyd Alexanders Prydain Chronicles books, they're really good. I also recommend David Eddings' "The Belgariad", which comprises six books, and the sequel "The Malloreon" which is five books. Both are part of the adventure/fantasy genre, and both recommendations are about boys who become part of tumultuous events and, of course, are very important though they don't know it. If you don't mind a female protaganist, I would also go for Mercedes Lackey's "Queen's Own" series, which takes place in her world of Valdemar (which has lots of books about it).
  15. Very cool, good work! Hilarious read
  16. I like it! But it reminds me more of the skeletons from the movie Jason and the Argonauts: http://uk.gizmodo.com/argonauts.jpg Where can I find a picture of the skeletons from Exile to compare with the t-shirt?
  17. LOL, I agree Matt, stick to first person. I found that I didn't have to store any items at all during Avernum 5, as I wasn't encumbered by having items in inventory....and I used up enough stuff (potions, wands, crystals) or sold enough loot so that I always had empty slots. Of course by the end of the game it was getting sort of tight. In Avernum 4 I picked the portal tower, because I was always going back there. I would do the same in Avernum 5 if I had too.
  18. I find sometimes that wireless mice don't last very long for me before they start to go unresponsive as well. Usually I change the battery on them and they're back to normal. In one case I went four weeks before I had to put new batteries in, meanwhile my colleague at work is telling me that she has a wireless mouse and it's been over a year without changing the batteries.
  19. Hahaha...just had to comment that I loved the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang reference! E3 was my first spiderweb game too, and I still like playing it for nostalgic purposes...but the flatness gets to me after awhile. I did like having 6 characters though.
  20. Are you talking about Foxfire, who sells you the key to the Monastery of Madness? If not, please elaborate as I am intrigued.
  21. How would I search A3's strings? Is that a file in the game data folder? And how would the A4 easter eggs work?
  22. Out of curiousity, where does the demo end for A2? I've only played the full version. Click to reveal.. Is it only the area you're barricaded in? Do you get to meet the Vahnatai and go on the rapids? edited to add spoiler tags
  23. Okay, so I've found the easter eggs in A2 and A3... A2 is a portal code you find down a secret passage in the Abyss that brings you to a strange town, and A3 is when you put pants on a rune and step on another rune in Rentar Ihrno's keep and get sent to a strange smiley face area. Or maybe they're the other way around.... Does anyone know where the easter egg is in A1? Also, were there any for A4 and A5?
  24. A2 and A3 are my favorites, I can't choose between them. Both of them had great plots, huge areas to explore and so many quests and dungeons. I also liked that it had quest functionality as in it saved a list for you so you didn't have to record notes all the time and that it didn't have that annoying bug when walking that A1 has. I like the newer games as well, I enjoy playing A4 and seeing all of Avernum with the new engine and I enjoy playing A5 and seeing the Dark Waters and new areas...oh, and for getting to ride boats again!
  25. I keep paper and sacks of meal and ore and iron bars in all the Avernum games, because of the various quests being related to them but I even save them even when there's no quest, like in A5. I also have a bad habit of not using my potions or herbs and saving them for an 'emergency'....well by the end of the game I have 12 potions or 20 uses of graymold and I still haven't used the items! Sleeping Dragon, I also have a habit of doing this as well, but for weapons I just equip the weapon that does the most damage. I also like giving an alternate weapon to the party members that have a specialized sword -- for example, in A5 my main fighter had 3 swords - the ice sword, the flame sword and the sword from the Dragon's keep that I chose as my reward. The flame sword and the ice sword wouldn't work against specific resistant monsters so there would be a backup. I don't think in A1-A3 it worked like that, but I'm giving my characters a backup weapon just in case while I'm playing A1.
