  1. My singleton could blast between 2 to 5 pylons between recharge trips depending upon what stray monsters were in the area. My party of 4 could get more because of first aid recharging of spell points. Being frozen is temporary, just watch that a frozen character doesn't get damaged and go unconcious. Team work speeds up the process. I tried the finesse approach and found that you miss the spellbooks until after R-I flees. Then the pylons go neutral.
  2. What I liked about the ghostly blade is that it is lower in weight for low strength characters. The hostile effect reduction and damage are nice too. I used it until deep into the Great Cave.
  3. Why go around the pylons when for a little more effort you can blast them to bits? Apply the same rule as going around them. You can nail the pylons with spells from outside their attack range. After a few of them you'll get it down pat. There's something nice about going from Fort Remote to R-I's Basalt Fortress without having to stop and inch around pylons. Not to mention it solves most of your money problems.
  4. There are 2 groups of goblins. The ones you need are past the message. There are 3 more in a holding cell in the center area.
  5. The aranea stoneseer is in the Great Cave's southeast corner east of Almaria. There are two entrances to the lower level. The shard arachnia are hard to kill since most spells and weapons do little damage.

  7. I'm still working through GF1, but I would like more multiple target or area effect spells than searing orbs. Having to haste just to have a real chance versus multiple monsters is a bother. I've been using crystals for a second spell attack and trying to use speed pods to keep from getting swarmed. I usually am out of spray crystals when I face 3 or more attackers. I haven't shaped yet, but it should always be an option. Maybe leave it to the middle of the game so you develope other skills first.
  8. Increasing R-I's health so the battle takes longer isn't the problem. The choice menu for actions taken needs to be increased. Hrickis and Nodicuas had enough different options so it was somewhat interesting. They were also a challenge because they were significantly higher level than the player's level would normally be at the time they were first encountered. R-I has two summoned creatures, the energy balls, and 3 scripted attacks. In A3 she has a better scripted fight than this one. Even the liches are better scripted for their fight options. I fought her as a singleton without my Vahnatai allies. I got down the stairs ahead of them and killed everything myself. It should have been harder. The only problem was I got into a stun loop where I didn't get an attack.
  9. I'm trying it with an Agent and a Guardian too. I'm just past that point and from what I've seen with the walkthrough it's not going to be better for a while. Shapers and Agents get almost no benefit from increased endurance. Guardians get the most according to the formulas. Shapers are meant to hang back and let their creations take the damage for them. Agents are supposed to blast first and hope nothing is left to fight them. The next section north of Watchhill is no better. The Atrilla nail you with poison or is it acid so you can't fight more than one at a time. I tried the Dry Wastes north of the Bandit Woods only to find that the monsters do over 100 points of damage. Raise quick action to go ahead of the monsters and just save often. It's suppose to get better eventually.
  10. Jeff made one panel tool use 16 just to screw with everyone's minds. The final battle isn't that bad even as a singleton in Torment mode. R-I just summons help that summon more help. If you turn off all the panels, then there is less to fight. I missed the one to stop the golems, and they weren't that bad. The Vahnatai Lord isn't too bad either. He can't parry area attacks like Icy Rain. The same problem you had with Nodicuas comes back to haunt the monsters. I thought the end was too easy. It doesn't make the top 3 fights. For me they were Nodicuas, getting Demonslayer, and that Gazer in the dungeon with Demonslayer. I know Jeff said that he wanted an easier end after complaints about a Geneforge end, but the Torment version should have a special script to give a true challenge.
  11. If you got the message about goblin tracks in the lower level of Fort Monastary, you should have gone farther and killed the 4 goblins around the corner. You need to do both to get an option about saying you found the way.
  12. Some of these already exist. The divine retribution wand doesn't work too well for high level encounters. Lightning wand is fairly good. The corruption baton covers all monsters with acid spray. All of them work well for low level encounters.
  13. You can always overwrite an old game file.
  14. Once you find the passage you have to go until you trigger the message that you found it.
  15. I'd rather use another sword that has better attack bonuses like Radiant Soulblade or Seeking Rapier. By the end game I boosted hardiness so I don't take much damage. That and a lot of invulnerability elixirs that were just piling up. In the end I was zapping everything with spells or bow since I was too far away for melee attacks. Demonslayer didn't seem as good as in the other games for damage even versus a demon.

  17. Singleton in Torment I finally finished at level 45 for my nephil pure spirit divine touched archer/fighter/mage/thief/priest. Missed level 46 by a few points. Dorikas and the Darkside Loyalists were a challenge, although for a fight versus party level it was still easier than Nodicuas. The last battle, I was two rounds away from winning and the screen froze. At least I only had to refight that battle. A bit easier than I thought it would be after the fights in Erika's Ruins. I'm taking a break from Avernum to load and run the Geneforge Trilogy before the next chapter is released.

  19. All it's really good for is to fulfill 2 quests. The Almaria one at least has a good reward. The gazer in the north part of the area has a better reward in the Gazer Sandals. Demonslayer wasn't any help versus the haakai since melee attacks slow the attacker.

  21. I glad to see Jeff's reply. The problem with lighting is the choice of color backrounds. If there is enough contrast between the colors we wouldn't have to increase the brightness to see in the lower black backround areas the black monsters.
  22. As a singleton you have trouble when you have to fight both at once. Switching off to go after the unprotected one means that the demon mostly holds back and terrorizes you while the golem attacks. You can do it with more mindshield scrolls and invulnerability potions than I had available. I needed to have shades between me and the demon so he wastes his terror on them. But then the golem whacks two shades a round and I have trouble fighting both and creating allies.

  24. The maps are in the NW area of Blosk in an upper level box and the quest (job board I think) and reward are in Dharmon.
  25. With Farsight its easy to find secret passages, but if you map enough you could usually narrow it down to a blank area on the map. After a while I could usually guess where a secret door should be hidden. Besides it's fun to find hidden stuff.
