  1. Thanks -- Based on previous games, I assumed that Dex wasn't helpful for tanks. That, and I still need to get a feel for the new ability system. I'll give it a few more tries, then go back to the auto-save (or hit "retrain").
  2. I've been doing alright so far, but am getting spanked by the Beraza Bandits. After surviving a fight with a bunch of swordsmen and archers (EDIT: with the help of some consumables), I don't seem to be able to produce enough damage output to kill the main boss-mage before some other bandits show up and help him massacre me. Have I totally screwed up my build? (My blademaster so far.)
  3. In Avernum and Geneforge, buying weapons and armor was a waste, as the money was better spent on spells and stat boosts. Since Avadon doesn't seem to have those at the beginning (no spoilers, please), what in general is worth buying in the demo and the first couple quests after that? I haven't bought anything yet.

  6. I killed him, but the gate didn't open. Is this normal? If not, does anyone know the SDF to get it to open? EDIT: nevermind. I noticed the other gate.
  7. I race to the top-tier creations (i.e. ones I keep through the endgame) with disposables, then keep the ones I create. For G5, that means 2 rotdhizons, 2 war tralls, and 1-2 gazers. That pretty much exhausts my essence pool.
  8. I had this problem, and that version seems to fix it.
  9. 5, 2, 4, 3 -- I'm not sure about 1. G3 was just painful, with its island-schlepping and forced faction choice. I bought the full version of G2 first, and the G1 UI felt too clunky after getting used to G2's improvements. If G1-G4 were ported to G5's engine as someone above suggested, I would probably buy the set to finally play G1 through. One thing I liked best about G5 and G2 was the freedom to sneak ahead into areas that would totally destroy you to either grab stuff or just see what lay ahead. I hate getting somewhere only to find that long ago I should have kept item X or not killed enemy Y. This kind of scout-then-return-in-force gameplay prevents a lot of that.
  10. So it sounds like you should be able to do Alwan then Taygen. Then, if you've carefully saved up pro-rebel conversation options and quests, you might be able to go back for Astoria and the Trakovites, then finally kill everyone for Ghaldring. I haven't done the numbers, and I don't think I have any saves from which I could conveniently try this, but it seems at least possible.
  11. Thanks -- I didn't think that daze would prevent the "anger Taygen" effect. /me goes off to find a source of strong daze.
  12. Has anyone managed to get the second access crystal without angering Kayar's Spire (or joining Taygen's faction)? I'd like to do the challenge area while keeping my options open for the ending, but I haven't found a stealthy way to get the crystal.
  13. Thanks. I had tried that, and the "Agent So-and-so slaps your hand away" message somehow didn't clue me in. I just killed that room of people this time (and got some decent greaves for it).
  14. I'm currently stuck trying to do Astoria's quest to sabotage Kazar's Spire. I first found and disabled the alarm device near the center, then unlocked the power crystal near the North entrance. But when I try to send a power surge, it says there are safety mechanisms in place. I stealthed around pretty much the whole place and the only other interesting thing I saw was the powered-down servant mind in the NW corner. Am I missing something obvious? Am I supposed to be able to do something with one of the devices in the vat room? (I have leadership 10, mechanics 16.) Thanks.
  15. I forget what level I was (on Normal), but I did it with a solo Agent, and the key was to avoid its area spell, and only get hit by its breath. It took a bit of luck, but I first shackled it (also wracked, I think), then set acid and energy status, then ran like mad. Poison, acid, and energy feel way more powerful than in previous games, especially combined with regeneration. I got through a lot of potentially maddening stun-locks by buffing up, running in and casting acid shower, then hunkering down and letting the enemies slowly die. This worked even better on non-stunning enemies, since you could afflict them with all 3 ailments.
