  1. Just look at forges as they are used in the game, Hydromedia. You quite often us a completed object (such as a sword) and add something new to it (such as a golden crystal). The new part gives the weapon new abilities. I imagine it's more like that.
  2. Aw, what's not sane about the Awakened? And the Loyalist only seem sane because since they are in power they get to dictate what is normal. Oppression of other sentient beings is not normal to me, though.

It had lots of factions, and I think you will get more out of it than Geneforge 3. Though if you do indeed prefer not making so many choices and just enjoying a good plot, you might like Geneforge 3.
  4. I think Spiderweb has gotten pretty good at making subclasses of monsters. There were so many skeletons in the last game, yet each group you met was so unique (with different names and powers) that no one would ever complain about something like that. Chitrachs and rockhounds in particular don't bother me so much. I always got the impression that they were supposed to come in annoying swarms. That's part of their character.
  5. Though I can't back this up with facts, I think I've noticed that more monsters seem resistant to arcane blow than to fireblast, primarily the tougher wizards and other spellcasters. So I often find myself using fireblast more often even after I discover arcane blow. Is there any truth in this?
  6. Oh, am I the only one who pronounces the 'a' like in cat? I suppose with Russian pronunciation, you guys would be more accurate. Jeff likes giving shapers Russian sounding names, doesn't he? Litalia, that sounds like it could be a real world name.
  7. I'm pretty sure canisters add DNA, not replace it. I believe every single gene we have now is essential for us staying alive, so you can't just have some of them start to go away, otherwise people would die from canisters, a lot. And I'm pretty sure there's no problem with adding genes, since there are probably animals out there with more chromosomes than we have (I know some have less). The problem would lie in canister construction. If someone makes a bad canister, or the genes that it adds don't line up properly with the genes a specific person has, damage could occur. Also, since there are many canisters made by many different people, it could be that they don't work so well with one another. After all, working with something as important as genes would require immaculate precision, and they seem to let just anybody make canisters these days.
  8. Ah, so Nioca wants swarms of stronger monsters. You all seem to agree, there was just some miscommunication, it seems. I'm all for stronger swarms of monsters, just as long as us poor players can keep turning down the difficulty when it gets too tough.
  9. Using canisters does effect your ending no matter what you do. It probably said something about the Shapers trusting you a bit less because of them. Otherwise, it makes sense that you got the Shaper ending, since to them every single person living in the Valley was technically a traitor to them, even the Loyalists.
  10. That is indeed the case for many people. Master Hodge actually began to fall apart due to canister use. There was also that poor girl that used the geneforge before you in Geneforge 4 that went insane right away. There are certainly hazards to using gene-altering devices. Though it is interesting to note that no one has ever died from it, aside from trying to use a geneforge twice.
  11. I feel like Exile monsters were harder to kill. Even a single rakshasa ot eyebeasts was always a guaranteed tough battle, and the crystal soul fights were some of the longest fights ever. In Avernum, there are less summoned monsters and the enemies, even bosses, seem to die much quicker. Physical damage seems to be more effective Avernum, while in Exile I tried to avoid using it at all costs, which made magically immune enemies the worst. This could just be me having no idea what I was doing, though, as I'm no expert like all you guys all are.
  12. While we're on the topic of difficulty, are the Avernum games much easier than the old Exile games or is it just me? I played both on the same difficulty (normal).

  14. Hmm, I've never tried stealing anything before. I think in the old Exile games you couldn't get away with it, so it's just become habit. I figure if it's marked as not yours, then you really weren't meant to have it anyway.

  16. The happy ending is not canon, so I never really went back for it. It was nice for Spiderweb to include an alternate ending, but kind of uncharacteristic of the Avernum series.
  17. Well, it is asking which one you prefer. And your opinion on which is the best would be more valuable than others since you have actually played multiple classes. Edit: I don't power-game, I play the game for enjoyment, even though I apparently authored a sort of power-gaming thread in Avernum's strategy central. I suppose I am a completionist... is that the same thing?
  18. Click to reveal.. They were created by the lich in the Pit of Abominations, I think. He is pretty old, but I believe it was after they began hibernation. Edit: more stuff after looking it up myself. Click to reveal.. He made them to control the vahnatai population, from wolves, apparently. He says they will not last long, as even altered wolves are not meant to eat rock. This guy is like an amateur shaper it seems.

It may have never been completed (you complete it yourself if you are a Taker) or he may have been to young to use it (he is described as 'growing' in the end of Geneforge 2). Technically, a geneforge is just a formula for a stronger being that rewrites its user to be that being. Ghaldring may have been the same formula they would have used for a geneforge, just created directly... if any of that makes sense to you guys. I love thinking about the science behind these games.
  20. When you reach the Azure caves (with Highground and Muck), there is a wizard living in the region who can undo geases, including the Anama one.
  21. But Barzahl himself had four drayks guarding him in his throne room.
  22. Oh, whew, I thought he was talking about members that support their genocide. The Shapers are the only faction that supports it, I believe. The Barzites would probably like to keep them around for slaves.

Plus every townsperson now seems to be their own monster. Oh, and I seem to remember Rentar-Ihrno being the one unique character that actually did stay in there, though I could be wrong. Edit: Silly tags.
