  1. Probably because most SW members are sleep-deprived students and not employees in businesses that benefit from DST. So yes, ignorance. Dikiyoba.
  2. I have a minigame on the Sopris server that's ready for a couple trial runs. It's a Capture the Flag game called Creepers vs. Skeletons. It requires 5 or 6 people to play, so let me know when you are available if you want to play. Dikiyoba also has a 8-player PvP deathmatch called SkyWars or Skyblock Warriors that is ready to play as soon as Sylae imports it into Sopris, so if you like minigames in Minecraft, be sure to bug her (politely!) about it.
  3. Time zones and daylight savings at least attempts to match local day and night cycles, which is pretty important for outdoor work and activities and for maintaining circadian rhythms. Daylight savings does a bit to keep the workday in sync with day and night cycles, though I have no idea whether it does enough to be worth the confusion of keeping it around. Time zones seem a lot less useful than they could be since they don't take latitude into account. They should probably be squareish, rather than a giant longitudinal stripe, perhaps with some additional adjustments for major mountain ranges or climate. That said, having a standard time system like the UTC for comparison and synchronizing activities with participants from multiple time zones is important too. Probably what we need to do is just get used to using a local time and UTC together. Need to know the time related to a local activity or when outside? Local time. Travel a lot, or online, or recording data? UTC. Dikiyoba.
  4. Debate threads certainly weren't the only active threads, because I know I rarely posted in the debates at that time yet still had a high post rate. The debate threads certainly helped keep General active, but they weren't the only threads responsible for it. Socializing and weird spam and games were part of it too. --- There have always been satellite forums, and there were fairly frequent chats (mostly on AIM) 6-8 years ago when forum activity was high. Maybe CalRef is different from those things, or maybe not. To me, it originally attracted people who continued to post on SW or who weren't very active on SW in the first place. The chat only attracted a bunch of long-time Spiderweb regulars after Spiderweb forum activity had been low for a long time. Dikiyoba could be missing something, though, since Dikiyoba knows very little about CalRef's early days.

    Bundle?

You can get the games at a significant discount by using this order form to buy the game series sets. If that is still too much for you, you will have to wait for Spiderweb's annual sale in the fall, or a third-party sale. You certainly don't have to buy all the games, though. Try out the demos first. Spiderweb's earlier games use a different engine or are less polished than the Avadons, or you might not be as interested in a particular series as you are in others. In particular, note that the first three Avernums are comparatively old and currently being remade. The remake for Avernum 1, Avernum: Escape from the Pit, is already released. It's the same story but on a different engine, so there's not a whole lot of point to buying both games. Dikiyoba is always glad to see another Spiderweb fan. Welcome to the forums! (Please leave your sanity at the door.)
  6. English majors aren't really about training people to enjoy certain forms of literature, though. It's not about liking or not liking. English majors are about learning to understand and analyze literature. Often times that means reading and analyzing literature you don't care for or actively despise because you will learn something from it. Sometimes it means rereading an old favorite and discovering that it's actually terribly written and/or full of unfortunate tropes and reduces the amount of enjoyment you get from certain literature. Why do we need people who can understand literature? Because stories are one way to spread and debate ideas, usually subconsciously and often in ways the author never intended. We need people who can communicate these ideas clearly and intentionally. We need people who can figure out what ideas are being spread and how stories spread them. We need to document the impact these ideas have on people and society. We need people to create new stories, to update the ideas that are good for people and society and debunk the ideas that are bad for people and society. (Usually, though, no one is sure which ideas are good or bad, or disagree about which category an idea falls into.) Each story is another rejoinder in the debate about human nature and society that's been under way for thousands and thousands of years and inspiration for its readers in how to create the best possible future. That's an awfully vague and grandiose reason, Dikiyoba knows, but it is undeniable that literature (and other forms of fiction) changes society and how people perceive the world. The Jungle led to the creation of the US FDA. The western genre obscures the actual history of the American West and cowboys. Stories are powerful, so it's worth being able to understand them.
  7. No. Do not under any circumstances do this. It makes you a very bad person and it doesn't work at all. Dikiyoba urges you to go home and rethink your life.
  8. Probably because the works considered typically fine art and classic literature tend to be most relevant to the wealthy. Most people tend to read popular literature like The Hunger Games, or watch TV, or play video games, which is considered inferior (sometimes a deserved reputation, but just as often an undeserved one). Which makes studying English all the more important, because the skills you learn in English is transferable to popular literature and TV shows and video games, and that is far more meaningful than having read the classics. Dikiyoba is tired too. Sleepy logic, go!
  9. Happy 10th SW anniversary, Kelandon. Dikiyoba's +1 is not nearly as fancy as some, alas.
  10. Out of curiosity, why did you put the word science in quotes? And don't worry; being pedantic has a long and venerable tradition on SW. There's no need to apologize for it. --- Dikiyoba has found that the quality of English classes is determined by the teacher, which is not the case in science classes. You learn about the same in science classes whether you have a good teacher or a bad one. In English, you learn a lot from classes with good teachers or practically nothing at all (or worse, incorrect information) from classes with bad teachers. Other people might have different experiences, though.
  11. Get a double major or major/minor in science and humanities? Dikiyoba.
  12. Most people don't go into careers that require advanced math, though. Most people will never need calculus or advanced algebra or whatever. Most people would be better served with more emphasis on the basics. (And statistics, if you are planning to go into any kind of science or research.) Dikiyoba.

    *yawns*

It's a Scorp thread. A very bad Scorp thread. Dikiyoba has nothing witty to say.
  14. Black pepper or chili peppers? (Both can cause childhood horrors, but chili peppers are more likely to do so.) On the topic of sweets, Dikiyoba had just learned the hard way that any chocolate cheesecake recipe that calls for cinnamon was written by someone who secretly hates people and delights in their disappointment. It's not really bad, per se, but it's definitely not right.
  15. If you don't get a reference (except for Dintiradan being named Tony; that's from CalRef), it's probably because it's a stupid reference I came up with because I couldn't think of anything else and wanted to get on with the game. Therefore, you should suggest a better one. And if you have no presence in SW lore, whose fault is that? Get out there and make yourself some! (Dikiyoba actually has a really good one for you now, Triumph, but you cannot have too much presence in Spiderweb lore.)
  16. Strictly sodium chloride (allowing impurities), or all chemical salts? The latter would be a varied diet, at least. Dikiyoba has not just one but multiple sweet teeth, somewhat unfortunately.
  17. I recently started playing XCOM: Enemy Unknown, and since it allows for a large roster with a fair amount of customization, I decided to do a Spiderweb forums party. Here's the roster I had at the point I sequence broke the game and so decided to start over. If you have any suggestions for better names or additional members, post them and I'll probably use them in the next game. Some of them right now are decidedly... mediocre. The color or color combination you most associate with people would be helpful too. Roster: Arancaytar 'Kitten' Ilyaran-Belyen Tony 'Evil Eye' Dintiradan (Nickname because he is a sniper) Lilith 'Pun & Gun' Nocaps: (Run & Gun is a skill) Ephesos 'Camel Racer' Crickets: Support (heals) Saunders 'Friendly Fire' Fluffy-Doom (Nickname because she injured Arancaytar twice in a single mission) Tyranicus 'Tombstone' Nethergate (Auto-assigned nickname) Iffy 'Top Muffin' Flamming Sylae 'Rainbow Dashing' Corell (Dashing is a ability) Jumpin 'Redskirt' Salmon Dikiyoba 'Frank' Dikiyora Trenton 'Pest Control' Grunt Jera 'Commander' Keen Stareye Boot Neb Neboo Deceased: Arctic 'Skinner' Wolf (Auto-assigned nickname) Al O'Rael Nikki Supanik Slartifer M. Tuckersworth Dikiyoba knows it's not the longest or greatest list, but hopefully it provided you with a moment or two of amusement (or at least confusion).

    Direct Democracy

Presumably changing US laws to limit the amount any person, corporation, organization, or special interest can donate to a campaign and to limit the methods and amount of advertising political parties, organizations, and candidates can do is far easier and less risky than a full-scale revolution, though. Dikiyoba.
  19. Dikiyoba is making this post to [Dec] inform you that [30] "I don't mean any harm" isn't an excuse [green] to make offensive (and tasteless) topics.
  20. Well, for starters, no one knew exactly what they were. I know that army sizes were significantly smaller during the medieval era than they were in the time of the Roman Empire. I don't know how plausible it is, but maybe legions were only effective past a certain army size, and medieval armies didn't reach that size on a regular basis. Dikiyoba has now entirely exhausted Dikiyoba's deep pool of knowledge on the subject of Roman and medieval armies.
  21. English longbows needed a ridiculous amount of training. Plus, they weren't very accurate at long range, so you needed a lot of archers firing upon a massed enemy to be effective. And the archers needed to be kept supplied with lots of arrows. Longbows were absolutely lethal when the right conditions were meant, but not particularly effective otherwise. Dikiyoba.
  22. "Lambda Closure likes this" That'll be €70.61, or half an hour of SW community service. Please send payment to: Dikiyoba "the Great" Dikiyora Dikiyobia City Court 4222 Spiderweb Avenue Dikiyobia, Internet Failure to pay may result in additional fines, arrest, and/or disembowelment by Velociraptors. Please don't make Dikiyoba use the Velociraptors!
  23. People have been suggesting SW MMORPGs for years. Usually Geneforge, but Avernum comes up as well. How is it "suddenly" an inappropriate name? Also, Dikiyoba is revoking Arancaytar's license to like posts.
  24. The idea of a turtle holding up the world is somewhat common in mythology. In fairness, it's a really, really awful pun. (Or maybe Dikiyoba pronounces A'Tuin and therefore B'Tuin differently than the rest of you: Ah-two-in.)
  25. I know. It's been tough ever since everyone learned that dinosaurs had feathers and are the ancestors of birds. Somehow, the fact that T. rex likely had some feathers completely negates the fact that had teeth up to 12 inches long, the strongest bite force of any terrestrial animal ever, got into vicious fights with each other, and killed other huge, well-armed (meaning weaponry, not forelimbs, though most other dinosaurs were well-armed in comparison to Tyrannosaurus in that sense too) dinos r a living. Dikiyoba may have to branch out into archosaurs in general. Modern crocodiles are terrifying, and they're only the beginning.
