    Happy Thanksgiving

Survive for how long? Doing what? Anyway body temperature probably isn't what most people would prefer for a living environment. Room temperature is about 18 deg C lower than that.
  2. For some administrative purposes in Britain, at least, English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish are all nationalities. Quite how a person defines their nationality seems to be entirely subjective: my passport says that my nationality is British Citizen, however when asked my nationality at a government office, I was told that "British" was not valid (nor was "British Citizen"), and I had to choose one of the above.
  3. I'm confused. There are no new screenshots on the Avernum 6 page. I found the world map picture by changing the url/filename of one of the other screenshots, but are there more screenshots that I haven't found the links to? Edit: Never mind, they've magically appeared. I must be in a time warp or something.

    Pet Peeves

The cat thing. My housemate's cat also used to keep me awake by scratching at my door, so I decided to respond to her the way an angry cat would. Every time she did it, I stamped towards the door and hissed as loud as I could. She'd stop, and think for a bit, then carry on. More hissing. Eventually I'd snatch open the door and hiss right at her and she'd run off. She did learn after a few days. I also discovered that she hates being blown in the face, so that was another response to her scratching. Failing that, try a water pistol.
  5. From what I remember, Randomizer enjoys throwing in a load of untruths with his reports on new games. Any other testers want to comment?
  6. Every now and then in A5, always in combat I think, my characters take a huge liking to a particular direction and move as far as they can in that direction, without me doing anything. The arrow keys then won't work, and if I click on a different spot the active character will move there, then use any remaining actions points to move in the preferred direction. This doesn't happen very often but it can cause a big problem when a character walks into a ally, as the "do you really want to attack this ally?" box then pops up, only to reappear as soon as I've clicked cancel. Once it's come up, the problem affects all of my saved games, even after quitting and restarting the game. I've tried reinstalling from my CD, no joy, but it does go away when I restart my computer. Annoying to have to do in the middle of fighting the doomguard. Any ideas on what's causing it? MacBook Pro OS 10.5.5, Avernum 5 v1.0.4
  7. I read an interview somewhere (I'll post a link if I find it) where Stephen King admitted that he's written so much that he can't always remember some of the books he wrote 20 years ago. So every now and then he gets a surprise when he walks into a bookshop, or in the middle of an interview someone mentions a book title and he has to stop and think, "is that one of mine?" Edit: It was in the Onion: http://www.theonion.com/content/node/33676 Now I'm not even sure whether to believe it or not. My memory lends it credibility though... perhaps somewhat worryingly.
  8. If you want another Mac tester... Name: Jo OS: Mac OS 10.5 Previous experience: Exodus. I'm not the most technically-minded tester but I have opinions nonetheless. Email adress: I'll PM it to you.
  9. If I've understood your problem right: all you need to do is defeat the keymaster in all four rooms, and collect the key from him once he's dead. Alternatively, go to all the empty keymaster rooms first and smash the crystals in the corners, then you'll only have to fight him once.
  10. Play the scenario and save under a new name once you're in there, so as not to lose the party you go in with. Since there's a custom singleton it doesn't really matter what sort of party enters the scenario. If you want to get a level 20ish party back, you can make a new party and then run it through the High Level Party Maker (- a utility scenario that will raise a level 1 party to whatever level you like), which you can download here.
  11. CM: Thanks, I did eventually figure this out and found the G904 Lazarus was talking about. It wouldn't paste however so I didn't quite get there. Lazarus: Also thanks. I've finished the scenario now and the graphics didn't bother me, would just have been nice to sort it if there was a quick fix. Good scenario so thanks again, keep them coming!
  12. OK, the G904 that you showed me is nowhere to be found in the scenario files. These are the files I can see. The "Game Graphics" file you told me to copy G904 into wasn't even accessible until I had unzipped the "Original Graphics" file. Even after copying your new G904 into the Game Graphics file, the new graphics still aren't showing up I'm afraid...
  13. Wow, quick response. Yep, I got that you change the appearance and portrait graphics in the same place. The appearance graphics aren't showing up, like you suggested. Originally Posted By: Lazarus. The portraits are in G904, copy them manually from the scenario file to the "Game Graphics" folder in the data folder. The portraits in G904 don't include the custom ones shown in the readme. Is that how it is supposed to be? Also, the Original Graphics folder was a zip file when I downloaded the game; none of the inventory area graphics (not even the original BoA ones) would show up at all until I went digging and unzipped the file. I copied the custom portrait gif files into the Game Graphics folder but no joy so far...
  14. Sorry to perpetuate discussion, I know this ought to be quite simple. (I have read the other thread about this.) I've just begun playing Tales from the Tabard Inn, I'm a mac user, and I've read the readme. The custom appearance graphics are showing up fine and I can switch between them as directed, but not the portrait graphics. They only appear when I'm talking to one of the characters (eg when I'm the bard talking to the priestess, the priestess portrait graphic will appear next to her). What do I need to do to make the portrait graphics show up? Cheers.
  15. Knew it would be blindingly simple. Cheers.
  16. I've just started a new game in Avernum 2, and the game forgets the preference settings every time I start it up. Screen resolution is also forgotten, so I have to tell it to change every time. I've tried reinstalling (from CD) but no change. However when I uninstalled I couldn't throw away the A2 preferences folder, as it was locked. I don't know much about that sort of thing so I'm not sure why it's locked, or how to unlock it. None of the preferences folders for other Spidweb games were locked. I'm on a Powerbook G4, OS 10.4.9, Avernum 2 v2.0. Any thoughts?
  17. In A4, all monsters are already shown as red dots on the automap, so it's easy to see whether you've killed them all or not. I'm guessing this will be the same in A5. I find see-through walls in games confusing.
  18. So how would you all pronounce "lichen"? I was taught two different ways.
  19. Oh. I would have pronounced the -ch as in the Scottish 'loch', or similar to the -ch sound in German.
  20. I found Spidweb's website when I inherited an old mac from a family member, hooked it up to the internet (my first computer - freedom was MINE) and googled something like "download free games mac". So then I got the A1 demo, and played it ad nauseum. A while later the A2 demo came out, so I played that to death too. Then I explored the website more carefully and played more or less all the demos, including E1-3 and BoE, and after about a year I managed to persuade someone to let me use their credit card (didn't have my own one then) to register A1 and A2. I've also got A3, BoA and Nethergate now. I don't know which game is my favourite, but I think I enjoyed playing A1 and A2 best, since I'd played the demos for so long that it was a huge relief once I finally got past the registration barriers. Haven't played any other computer games in the last ten years or so except for Myst and Riven.
  21. I seem to remember Erica scrying in A1 or A2 (seems like the sort of thing she'd do), and Aimee and probably some of the dragons (Khoth/Sulfras?). If so then it's perfectly possible that they all knew about plenty of other caves that were undiscovered by the rest of Avernum, including the Triad mages. The dragons at least knew about the vahnatai lands, and Erica wouldn't necessarily have any reason to let on about all the other stuff she knows. I got the feeling she likes to keep an air of mystery.
  22. Having only played the demo: Like - having a new game to play - seems like a big world... Sorry, can't really be much more specific... Dislike - No secret passages! I loved those in the Exile and Avernum trilogies. - Prefer the Avernum trilogy graphics in general. It was cool that on the automap a wall was just a line, and you could walk right up to the wall and start bashing into it to find passages. In A4, there's always space between you and the wall and it's a lot less clear on the map what is a space to walk on, and what is just a space between spaces.
  23. Quote: Originally written by Tyranicus: For the most part, however, moving two spaces with a mouse click isn't a huge issue. It is when you're trying to walk through a door, not step on a swamp square, look at something, and especially when counting your moves and trying to hit the right thing in combat. Is this just some weird way in which the Windows and Mac versions differ then? Something which untechnological people like myself don't understand. Anyway, as predicted, I'm getting used to it now. Hey ho!
  24. Apologies if this has been asked before. I did a search and couldn't find anything. I've just downloaded the Windows A1 demo to mess around with at work. I played the whole game a few years ago on my mac at home. On the mac I move around with the arrow keys and that works fine, but in the version I've just downloaded the arrow keys make me move diagonally, ie the 'up' key sends me northwest instead of north, which is really annoying. If I use the number pad with numlock on then 7, 9, 1 and 3 will send me W, N, E and S respectively, but that's quite hard to use. The mouse is no good either as one click moves me two spaces. Is there any way I can change the directions of the arrow keys? Edit: Also, there's some very weird stuff going on when I look in a character's inventory. I try to 'pick up' something in the inventory by left-clicking on it, but it just flashes and stays there. Then for some reason it works with the right mouse button. ???
