  1. I know this doesn't answer the original question, but if a person plans to play all three games, I recommend playing in order. Otherwise, skip G2; get G1 and G3.
  2. I started at the bottom of the thread and read upwards...
  3. Mr. Snuffy, just an FYI: starting a thread whose general gist is "Hey, I'm new! I'm having a lot of fun!" is, around here, like an invitation to some people to post an insufferable and unfunny meme. So watch out. Sorry to ruin the thread, but I want to get in before they can strike again. It's not that starting a thread like this is intrinsically bad. Others just make it that way.

Are the vahnatai truly the logn lost shapers? Yes, and they became twisted and deformed into Vahnatai after an accident with asbestos. Just for clarity - no. No they are not Shapers. They will never be Shapers, and they never been Shapers. But what if they were Shapers?
  5. Quote: Originally written by Excalibur: Well, I suppose someone who has the capability of reading computer script can. Otherwise everyone should cope just fine. As far as I know, there is no way to directly view the game formulas without the source code. The only Spiderweb Software game whose source code is accessible is Blades of Exile. There have been significant engine changes between Blades of Exile and Avernum 5. However, as the original poster wrote, people may have already determined the formulas by changing their stats and examining the resulting changes.

  7. Luckily, the game has a built-in alarm system: dying.

In addition to the Butterfly Effect, there are a variety of famous paradoxes associated with time travel. Luckily, we currently have no way of successfully doing so. And you believe that we don't have time machines? I guess you have been told the truth. We alter time all the time, it's just that reality alters so only those that alter it know what changed. So that, for the vast majority of people, time hasn't been altered at all.

If you actually read this, please make sure you are aware of the future consequences.

  12. Didn't Divine Retribution give out enfeebling/cursing/other-bad-thing back in the days of A1/A2 at level three? Does it still do that in A3? Whichever game(s), that's the version I like the most.
  13. Litalia was a minor stooge, and most people ended up killing her. Also, she had doubts about what she was doing. Tullegolar, you seem to have everything figured out. How do you plan to deal with the inevitable dissentious apprentice of G1-3 fame? What happens when some young canister-popping punk strolls in and tries to destroy your entire army? How will you stop him?
  14. Yes, she does. I believe her room is in the northwest corner, where you originally made a copy of the scrolls.

  16. On a somewhat related note and also probably relating to the topic, I couldn't stand the multiple levels of A4. In previous Spiderweb games I just found a wall, walked along it, and traced out the outline of whatever region I was in; then I worked my way inwards, entered any towns, and thoroughly explored them as well. With A4 this is mostly impossible for several reasons: 1) You don't heal at the earlier rate while "outdoors", meaning you have to trek back to town every other time you fight a pack of bats 2) Multiple levels mean you (or at least I) have to backtrack, take every staircase down or up, and explore those tunnels 3) In the small section that I played, there were very few actual limits on how far I could move; my system completely failed when I had to cover so much territory at a time Chances are I just didn't play enough to let A4 grow on me. But the fact is that whether or not I have an uninformed opinion, that initial perception cost Spiderweb money.

    G4 Preview

Yes, it gives away much more than was previously common knowledge. So if you haven't read the article yet, consider yourself spoiler-warned.

Just for posterity: Alorael's mother is expensive, heavy, and ineffective. God forbid there should be a single generation that doesn't know who TM is, because they'll be blindsided. But just in case...
  19. Quote: Originally written by Kennedy: Well, my thought was it would be a reward for finishing the game, and also since the previous Geneforges didn't come with a character editor it would be nice. Perhaps the editor should only be accessible as an egg of some sort or require the player to enter a cheat code after they've reached the Geneforge and won. Type "forgemygenes" or something like that. Does the scripting allow modifications of creations though? A reward like that is only interesting if you leave alive someone to use it on... I think that scripting would let you give bonuses to different creatures depending on their slot, but that means that a Fyora in slot 1 would get the same bonus as a Battle Alpha in slot 1. So it could be done through scripting, but it would be ugly. If this idea is implemented, it would probably work out better if it was done through the game's engine.
  20. And no one expects a supposedly loyal servile to be infiltrating their citadel of top-secret research.
  21. But hopefully, she/he can appear as a ghost seeking revenge. And I think I remember hearing that Geneforge will have a plot which goes in a different direction. And it's great to say so, but it's even better to give us examples. Please?
  22. I'm guessing crossmr wants to put his/her best equipment on their lead character. Since DEX doesn't factor into armor (unless Jeff's been fooling around with the formulae again) you can't tell which would be better by using prevention totals. The change between 6% and 2% +1 DEX is probably going to go unnoticed. Overall, they'll prevent about the same amount of damage. Some of it will be in hits missed and some of it will be in damage blocked though. If you had equipment with, say, 50% armor versus +X DEX, where X = prevents an equal amount of damage, I'd say that you should go with the DEX because that's probably enough to make your character a good shot without even training, whereas armor only blocks damage.

We can see what kind of graphics the new PCs will have. It doesn't matter how early we get the graphics. You might as well ask us why we speculate at all.
