Well-Actually War Trall Chessrook44
Avernum is finished, and now it's time for me to play through Avernum 2! If you want to see the previous game, you can take a look right here! That said, here's the first episode!
Well-Actually War Trall Ishad Nha
If you use a Custom Priest you can start the game with Safe Travel and Unshackle Mind, two spells you won't otherwise get until much later in the game. Custom Mages can start the game with Ice Lances and Unlock Doors, spells they otherwise have to save up for.
Understated Ur-Drakon Earth
also get cloud of blades as soon as possible.
Well-Actually War Trall Ishad Nha
If monsters are confined in a space you can just "set and forget" Cloud of Blades, walk away and let them suffer.
Well-Actually War Trall Chessrook44
Didn't even realize Cloud of Blades was still an option here... I'll keep my eye open for it. Either way, instead of going right to the fort we take a quick trip to the first place we revisit from Avernum 1! Plenty happening in this place, enough for a two-parter! Understated Ur-Drakon Earth
it is in 1st trilogy.
Well-Actually War Trall Ishad Nha
But not in A1, ditto Move Moutains. You will be making occasional use of the latter in A2.
Well-Actually War Trall Chessrook44
As Ishad said above, neither of those spells were available in A1. I had forgotten about Wall of Blades, but not Move Mountains. For now, we'll check out a little farmhouse before we go into the fort. Because reasons. Well-Actually War Trall Ishad Nha
ID is done at other towns, places. (Formello had that service in A1.) Money limit is 15,000. If someone is getting fewer Action Points they have the Sluggish trait or they are overloaded with gear?
Understated Ur-Drakon Earth
too much armor, magical (spell) effect, magical item or trait.
Well-Actually War Trall Chessrook44
Thanks for the gold information. And considering the moving less part, I imagine it's probably armor. After all, it's the mage who's moving sluggishly. That said, onwards into the feline fortress!
Well-Actually War Trall Ishad Nha
You need a password to open the gate linking the cave at the rear with the main fort. This is obtained after a fight breaks out at Fort Ganrick. (Leaving via a side entrance may cause you to miss the fight!) Travel between Fort Draco and Formello is quite safe if you buy a boat... Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
... but then you miss out on the experience.
Understated Ur-Drakon Earth
And considering the moving less part, I imagine it's probably armor.
Well-Actually War Trall Ishad Nha
A Robe is armor enough. If the armor encumbers the Mage, he/she won't be able to cast any Mage spell beyond Slow! (Unless the Mage has the Natural Mage trait.) As for experience found between Fort Draco and Formello, Chessrook is not using a party of Custom characters... Nor has he bought any spells or spell levels yet. Well-Actually War Trall Chessrook44
Ishad is correct. And my mage DOES have the Natural Mage trait. Each member has a trait in fact (Though Talia has two, one being a penalty trait, and Recksss has none, being a Slith). So that said, it is probably just too much armor since I'm trying to protect her. ANd as for missing the experience... I'd never miss the experience! I want ALL the experience! That said again, let's wrap up a little cleanup and prepare for more exploration.
Well-Actually War Trall Ishad Nha
ID, identification of items can be done at Formello. Ditto another place you will find elsewhere in the demo, it is a small town consisting of a shop. Well-Actually War Trall Chessrook44
Wandering to another place in this region, and either this game has a difficulty spike or I came here when I shouldn't have.
Well-Actually War Trall Ishad Nha
Today I finished A2 and I feel that A2 is tougher than A1. You will sometimes need Control Foes to get the monsters at each other's throats. Bind Foe is needed a lot. Cave Slime can be beaten with a party full of level 8 Custom characters. Start the fight as soon as you see the Slime, Haste the Mage, Slow the Slime and use ranged weapons. It probably won't get acid on anyone. Well-Actually War Trall Chessrook44
Well it's a good thing I've gained such a new appreciation for the less damagy spells now. Otherwise this would be SO much more painful. Onwards to exploring a few spiders, a few bandits, and some fiery pit place.
Well-Actually War Trall Ishad Nha
You won't get Level 3 Curing for some time, hence it is a good idea to bring down Cave Slimes before they hit you with the acid. Said acid takes a while to wear off. Healers can tell you if an item is cursed, you will see the Uncurse Item entry for a given PC's healing-required screen. Apart from cursing, no item ever has any negative effects so you can wear it immediately.
Well-Actually War Trall Chessrook44
Ah, but then how would I know the item is more effective than what I already have, eh? Still, I like being careful and cautious. Ya never know. That said, it's these guys again. Time to blow out some eardrums...
Understated Ur-Drakon Earth
I think by that time you find cursed item x you have same item x non-cursed version and cursed rings/other "jewelry" are just bad, some items can be un-cursed (don't remember how much it costs and if its worth it).
Well-Actually War Trall Ishad Nha
Uncursed never did anything to make the item useful when I tried it in A1, it does enable the item to be dropped. Chapter 1 takes place in an area that is roughly 2x2 outdoor sections in size. Hence Chessrook can walk or boat to Formello right now, when he wants new spells or Identification of items. Walking or boating will also restore health and spell energy. (If he has not played Exile 2 or Avernum 2 before, the Chapter 1 area is bounded by those cubic magic barriers.) Well-Actually War Trall Chessrook44
A two-parter today, as I deal with what has become my most HATED spell in ALL of the Spiderweb Software games by now.
Well-Actually War Trall Ishad Nha
Go to Formello, get Bind Foe at level 2, that should make a lot of battles much easier.
Understated Ur-Drakon Earth
in Exile fully identified cursed item's value was 0 and in A2 (according to walkthrough) un-cursed items can be sold.
Well-Actually War Trall Ishad Nha
I did not find the Aranea Cave to be as bad as all that, granted you had to keep alert at all times. Difficulty of game is presumably based upon you going to Formello and upgrading your spells as soon as you can.
Well-Actually War Trall Chessrook44
Having FINALLY finished the first region, we move on towards Formello, heading east through lands belonging to Mortax... hmm, I wonder how he's doing... Well-Actually War Trall Ishad Nha
Spellbook you can't read, you need an item that you won't get till Chapter 4. Ent Bel Tor, you will learn what this means later on. Alice mentioned other libraries, check all unexplored edges of the map, you will find a concealed room... The Clearing that Rose mentioned, you would call it a "difficulty spike", I would call it a death trap. Well-Actually War Trall Chessrook44
easy? keep dreaming. when I played A2 I needed to do those even I had done preliminaries (probably). Well two out of three of them were easy. The Test of Battle? The problem there is my characters are either focused on melee combat and do lots of damage there, or focused on ranged combat and powerful there but limited on amount of attacks. Either way, this time we check out another town, then another Vahnatai resting facility.

Magnificent Ornk nikki.
Which one is the quickfire one? I think I usually have to do one, and I always chose that one. Send a mage in, haste her, and leg it.
Well-Actually War Trall Ishad Nha
That is the Test of Speed for sure... You can always come back later to do the Test of Battle, you are doing it voluntarily not because you need to. Other two tests are easy enough. Test of Battle can be passed without hassles if you use wise tactics. Stockpile wands, scrolls and potions. Make sure only one opponent can attack you at any one time. Bless, Haste and Shield yourself, if you can. Use healing pools. (You can flee at least some of the fights and still pass the test.) Well-Actually War Trall Chessrook44
Aye, I'll be taking care of the Test of Battle sometime in the future. Eventually. For now though, time to explain ourselves to the Vahnatai council.
