Garrulous Glaahk Minion
I'm playing the Avernum 4 demo and just reached the outskirts of Formello. Inside Giscard's estate, I found a trapped box that I was unable to disarm. As I usually do in this kind of situation, I moved the party out of range of the trap and set it off using a single party member in combat mode. The resulting explosion knocked him out and killed the nearby servant, allowing me to plunder the contents of the box without fear of repercussions. Are suicide runs an acceptable method of setting off traps or does being knocked incur some penalty I am not aware of? Being healed for free by passing the city gates makes this a very tempting tactic and as far as I have noticed, no one seems to mind (that is, turn hostile). Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
You might reconsider in other games where the traps cause more than damage. There are a few that summon monsters and not the easy to kill types. Avernum 1 in Formello has a nastier one guarding the treasury and others bring in demons. So save before trying it out. Hatchling Cockatrice Lilith
The only penalty for unconsciousness is that characters don't earn experience and can't learn spells while unconscious, so make sure to bring them back as soon as possible and (if they're a caster) definitely before reading any spellbooks. Garrulous Glaahk Minion
Thank you for clearing that up. While it is very practical not to have to resurrect characters by finding a healer and having to lug their dropped gear around, it does seem easy to abuse this privilege when you're close to a town. Easygoing Eyebeast Jerakeen
There are other ways to abuse it too... not sure about A4, but in A5 you can exploit it to keep some artifacts you would otherwise lose, and in A:EFTP you can temporarily sacrifice a character to get a very nice weapon far earlier than you'd be able to fight the demons that spawn when you take it. Garrulous Glaahk S M Adventurer
Be aware that some traps may set off an alarm and turn the town hostile as well. An example I think is Formello's city treasury in A4. It's best to save the game before triggering any trap in case that happens.
