Setting off traps OK?

I'm playing the Avernum 4 demo and just reached the outskirts of Formello. Inside Giscard's estate, I found a trapped box that I was unable to disarm. As I usually do in this kind of situation, I moved the party out of range of the trap and set it off using a single party member in combat mode. The resulting explosion knocked him out and killed the nearby servant, allowing me to plunder the contents of the box without fear of repercussions.

Are suicide runs an acceptable method of setting off traps or does being knocked incur some penalty I am not aware of? Being healed for free by passing the city gates makes this a very tempting tactic and as far as I have noticed, no one seems to mind (that is, turn hostile).

There are other ways to abuse it too... not sure about A4, but in A5 you can exploit it to keep some artifacts you would otherwise lose, and in A:EFTP you can temporarily sacrifice a character to get a very nice weapon far earlier than you'd be able to fight the demons that spawn when you take it.
