Rache's Avernum Site?

... Yes, I do, but as Dire Hobbit observed, the reference stems from the very first book by Conan Doyle (although the Rache/Rachel element is inverted). You might also check out that speech Sherlock gives Watson about a mobile phone and compare it to one about a pocket watch in "The Sign of Four". Moffat is a master of subtle (and not so subtle) references, in addition to being a brilliant screenwriter in general.

I do not watch Sherlock, but you know, there's this funny, archaic medium called 'print'. Believe it or not, it was all text. Like Zork, if you can imagine, only not interactive. At all. But people used to do this thing called 'reading'. And, sometimes, they'd remember what they'd read.

A Study in Scarlet couldn't make up its mind about Holmes. On the one hand, he was proudly ignorant of the Copernican solar system. On the other hand, he knew enough German to recognize a random noun, and claim familiarity with typical German handwriting styles. Obviously this just didn't make sense. It was all very well to say that Holmes didn't want to know anything that wasn't relevant to his profession, but in fact any random obscure fact might turn out to be relevant to that profession. And given Conan Doyle's need for publications, it probably would. So by the next installment, Holmes had entirely abandoned his anti-intellectualism, and was a thoroughgoing polymath quoting Goethe at every opportunity.
