Stealth in G4?

I just got the Clover boots in G4, and I was surprised to find that in addition to the +3 luck bonus, they add +1 to Stealth.

 

I take it that Stealth is a hidden skill, which presumably lets you sneak a bit closer to hostiles than you'd otherwise get away with. Does anybody know if it has a base value, based on Dex perhaps, or if it's possible to train in it, or whether it will ever appear in the character info screen?

I think that, like you said, it's hidden, and is not affected by anything other than stealth and won't ever appear on character info. I'm not 100% positive though.

Go to the first zone outside Southforge. There is a lady hiding there that explains stelth and gives you an example of how to use it.

Yes, I remember her. I just didn't realize that it was an actual in-game skill to which bonuses could be applied.

 

It makes me wonder if there are any other hidden skills.

Vampiric touch, radiance, and stealth are a few that only appear as bonuses on items.

 

Stealth is really useful in avoiding detection by monsters and triggering mines.

So the only way to increase this skill is to acquire more boosting items, assuming they exist. OK, cool.

Does stealth work for mines? I never tested it; I preferred just blasting through ever. What games does stealth appear in, and which ones let stealth affect mine detection.

You can sneak past things in all 5 games. Stealth can be increased in G4-G5. Possibly the others but I'm not sure. Only in G4 does it effect mines.

Just found a canister of Speed, another hidden skill, I guess.

Speed is a spell, casting it multiplies your action points by 1.5.

There is a stat for speed, and I guess you could call it a hidden stat. Different creatures walk at different speeds (orks, for example, are very slow). Sadly, you can't change this "stat" without altering the character stats.

But we're not talking about other games, we're talking about G4. Hence "Stealth in G4?". Therefore, the canister of speed would have been found in G4, before it was nerfed.

 

Also, movement speed outside of combat means almost nothing- things generally (couple of exceptions) get the same number of action points.

GF4 was the first game where you no longer needed the minimum of 5 action points left to do an action other than drop items.

It seems that Energy Preservation is another hidden skill, though. I suppose it's similar to Magical Efficiency from Avernum.

 

But unlike the Avernum games, there seems to be no way to unlock the hidden skills so that they can be trained. Correct?

Correct. I'm not familiar enough with Avernum to understand exactly what you're talking about, but you can't train hidden skills; they can only be boosted by items.

In Avernum, if you got enough of two normal skills, you could train in the hidden skills. For example, if you got 8 Intelligence and 8 Spellcraft, you could train Magery. If you got 8 Magery and 8 Endurance, you could train Magical Efficiency, and so on. Geneforge didn't have this, much to its benefit.
