Garrulous Glaahk jimbob
Alright, so I am playing the Avernum Series on my laptop, so I purchased a USB keypad so that I could use the keypad for moving inside dungeons, since the mouse moves you more steps than you want to go most of the time. However, it appears that the USB keypad can only move you diagonally. Is this a problem with the game, or is it a problem with the keypad? Thanks in advance to everyone who answers! Well-Actually War Trall Ishad Nha
The number pad keys move you in any of eight directions while the arrow keys only move left, right, up and down.
Garrulous Glaahk jimbob
I already know this, and going back and checking confirms it, except that I have to hold down the, say, 7 key to move west. Simply pressing it once does not work. I hold it down for about one second or so, and then the character moves about ten spaces to the west instead of one. Understated Ur-Drakon Celtic Minstrel
If this is a Windows computer, is Num Lock on?
Garrulous Glaahk jimbob
Yes, it is Windows Vista Home Premium. I tried with numlock on and with it off, but no luck.
Well-Actually War Trall Ishad Nha
Try it with other games, non-Spiderweb, see if the problem occurs then. You have not accidentally turned on the Sticky Key accessibility feature?
Garrulous Glaahk jimbob
Other games? The only games I have are Spiderweb games. They're the only ones I like (seriously). I do not have sticky keys turned on either, I already checked. Any other suggestions? Thanks to everyone who has tried to help me out already! Understated Ur-Drakon Celtic Minstrel
Are there settings somewhere for the numeric keypad? Maybe the problem is with the device itself. I've never used a USB keypad, so I couldn't say. Try launching Notepad/Wordpad, enabling Numlock, and typing on the keypad. Does it respond the same way as if you're typing with the primary keyboard? Garrulous Glaahk jimbob
Interesting. I opened up notepad and typed in numbers using the USB keypad, and the keypad works just fine. I guess it must be something with the game. The question now is how to fix it.
Well-Actually War Trall Ishad Nha
I am on Windows XP and I have never had any problems with any Avernum game. It might be a Vista compatilibity issue, see if the Compatibility Wizard helps. Then again it might just be a laptop keyboard issue.
Kyshakk Koan Redstart
I tried reproducing this with a basic USB keypad (lenovo) on a desktop computer running Vista, and on my laptop running XP. Attempted to move in all eight directions in BoA with numlock on. Had no problems.
Garrulous Glaahk jimbob
I just tried Blades of Avernum as well with the USB keypad, except with Blades of Avernum the 2, 4, 6, and 8 keys move the character only north, east, south, and west as compared to only diagonally with Avernum. Any other suggestions? If not, then I guess I will just have to deal with it. Thanks to everyone who tried anyways.
Understated Ur-Drakon Celtic Minstrel
What effect does NumLock have? I think it needs to be on, though you did say that didn't help... Sorry, I just don't have any other ideas...
Garrulous Glaahk jimbob
I tried with numlock and without numlock. When it is off, only the 2, 4, 6, and 8 keys move the character anywhere. When it is on, it does not move the character anywhere. Also, it moves only diagonally in Avernum, but up and down and sideways with Blades of Avernum. Again, thanks to everyone who tried. I am kind of getting used to using the mouse, but if anyone has any suggestions for me to try, they are still welcome.
Magnificent Ornk nikki.
As a semi-related point of interest, whilst using the left mouse button does move you two steps instead of one, the right mouse button will move you one step per click. This will only work in A1, but A1 is the only game that I've had this problem with.
Easygoing Eyebeast The Mystic
From what I can tell, it's just with A1. As I never got a numpad, I get around this by being really, really fast when I click the mouse.
Garrulous Glaahk jimbob
Yeah, I did notice that the right mouse button only moves one step. I guess I will just have to use the mouse. Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions, though!
