Yep, you should be able to see the gate closed gate through a window, it's on the floor, but you have to look carefully. If you didn't pass through a temple to get here, you are in the wrong place.
To open those doors you need to kill Rentar-Ihrno. To open the main gate to Rentar, go to the lower level, head south to the barracks, then east, then north through the temple, and then pull the lever on the ground.
Fine, I'll use "most difficult" instead of the more ambiguous "hard". Care to explain why it's the most difficult other than "I don't like it therefore it's hard".

That's nice, but that wasn't the question.
Would you say that beta testing is the hardest part?

Why do I find this statement ironic when we consider your scenario design record?
I think most of the BoX community agrees, redoing Erika, Garzahd, or Rentar is bad. I even felt queasy about it in A4, but it's good to hear that they are dead. To paraphase, it's time for them to fade into the history of Avernum.
I think your break down of work is a little flawed because often designers do not progress linearly; in other words, they don't do towns one at a time as the game would be played.
I would say the hardest part to do would be all the little details, the needed dialogue but ultimately of little impact like the shopkeepers and random townspeople. Doing intermediary dungeons that have a point, but are there not having a very central role to your plot. It's times like these that are the least rewarded and least motivated.
The testing phases are perhaps the most rewarding as people are finally playing your work. The most exciting parts are the plot development and fleshing out the key points. Everything else is just a lot of work.
One of the panels on the lower level frees them, the others make the final battle and passage to it easer. I do not believe you need to free them to win the game, however. If you feel you are strong enough, you can try to go down the main corridor without them.
1) You will get a mission from the Castle when it is time to go here. Do not worry about this until later.
2) Talk to Solberg, kill his demon, and he should give you some info.
3) No.
