  1. There's no right or wrong, but there are many ways to get one's ass sued off for libel and/or obscenity.
  2. It's like you said. A "G" scenario of mine can, at times, be at LEAST as bad as a "R" scenario of other people. (Given, an NC-17 scenario is still going to be Really Bad to get such a rating, but that's for sake of overt pornography or other such stupidity.)
  3. .gif works well. .bmp is a bit large (and esoteric for some), .jpg ruinates the quality and .bmp is WAY too large (and isn't even displayed properly on some browsers).
  4. Problem- those trolls make no sense as 2x2 monsters. If you could get 'em into a 28x32 space, it'd be preferable.
  5. Oooooh!!! I love the nebula- and the pillars are fantastic. The green and purple really set one another off. The cobblestone bridge is also preferable to the shoddy-looking wooden one. 5/5 Now finish the damn thing! ;_;

  7. The nebula should be 2x2, just because I can't yet place it without the nomenclature. Meanwhile, I can't say I agree with the use of floors in the second shot- too many colors. The bright R, G and B don't set one another off very well- maybe using a green regal carpet or a darker mosaic tileset would help.
  8. Dahak, do me the honor of letting me bear your children. This is genuinely awesome. I agree with Thuryl, though- something in the space would be nice. Why not make the bush go on the hills, and place something magical (runes, lantern, etc) on the hills instead?
  9. I agree with Ator. Kel, when Ator says "be fair", he's being far gentler than I would. I'm not entirely convinced that you give a damn about the plots of Bahss or LP- it's possible that my perspective is marred by the mishandled gameplay of each, but it seems like those stories are devoid of ambition to the extreme. Eagle, your scenario idea sucks. It sounds terrible and stereotypical, and I feel bored hearing about it. When thinking about a scenario to write, think about what you want to happen first and foremost. Sacrifice your ideas into RPG stereotypes only when needed.

  11. FYI, "searching for clues" is perhaps the worst part of any RPG. A SDF is basically an integer value. The parts A and B are "coordinates", but not really. Here: Code: 0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 Now if you decide to use SDF 2,3 and change it to 4, the grid will look like this: Code: 0000000000000000000000000000000040000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 And then when you ask something about that integer you just changed, you tell it to ask about SDF 2,3.
  12. One possible idea- you could have creatures drop a few "general" types of corpses. Humanoid, Beast, Slime, etc., and whatever else you'd be interested in. Then, make undead types like "Skeleton", "Beast Skeleton", "Undead Slime", etc. (Maybe you can have 'really powerful' varieties for more devious enemies.) Have the call apply to a rectangle (see the Codex for that), and create creatures on those spaces. And hey- you could have it so that it becomes worthwhile for the party to pick up those totally-unwieldy corpses, since they can revive 'em in future battles! Heck, you could even have a mission where you need an attractive date to get into the ball, and one of the town prositutes wouldn't look so bad as a dressed-up zombie... ... Right. Well, take the idea as you will.
  13. Nahh, I'd rather let the humor play on for a little longer. So far: * Thuryl > Creator AND Shyguy * Kel > Tarl AND Measle * Khoth > Yoshiyuki AND Gonzales There are others I think are total BS, but I'm close to being banned as-is, and Drakey's a militant ki-- administrator.
  14. Just out of mild curiosity, which prominent BoX designers would you assign the "sensei" honorific in conversation? (For reference, the designers are those who made any 8.0+ scenario for BoE or BoA. If you don't recognize the name, you probably shouldn't choose 'em.)
  15. "I think that the Exile games were very fun. Everything you were seeing for the first time, and things changed as you went on." Changes? Tell me, who has actually been convinced by those crummy "ruined towns"? Monster levels, I suppose, go up- and hey, you can unlock new dungeons to kill 'em all! Don't get me wrong. The premise of Exile is interesting, the Vahnatai are an interesting invention, and the plagues almost sorta (but not really) had potential. All that SW sales indicate, though, is how good JV is with his "shareware cut-off" points. Beyond that, the gameplay is as rigid as one could wish and as monotonous as one is in bed, except without the entertainment value for the participant. "There is a certain thrill in sanctifying an evil altar of undead to protect Formello, and then going on to beat up a cave of Nephilim." Look, mommy! I'm performing eugenics for god and country! Sheesh- it's like living through every action of every RPG stereotype. If I want to do that, I may as well unzip my pants and watch back-to-back marathons of Conan the Barbarian and Zelda: Warrior Princess. "Especially because you need to change your tactics against them. Not everything needs to be deep and insightful or radically different." So 'Bless + Haste + Repel Spirit' becomes 'Bless + Haste - Repel Spirit'? Admittedly, that's as complex as most BoA scenarios have been, but that's still pretty bad. "I disagree. In Geneforge 2 and 3 and even 1 every day was a new adventure." Ooh! Ooh! Now that the Fyoras are dead, let's kill the Clawbugs! And then Cyroas! And Battle Alphas! Gotta kill rogues! Gotta kill rogues! "Valley of Dying Things was some of the best Avernum gaming out there." ... ... ... ... Next argument. "Did you ahve to diss almost every Spiderweb Software game in existance in a single post?" I didn't. Nethergate is fine stuff (and so is, for that matter, BoE's A Small Rebellion)- which is why I even bother complaining. JV can and has done better. "About plagues: the monster plagues are fine in my opinion, and so is Valley of the Dying Things. They are a bit clichéd (think the Bible), but I wasn't thinking about that while trying to negotiate between the troglodytes and giants." The trogs are probably E3's best plague. But if you'll look at the rest of it, you have the slimes which and roaches which are vaguely interesting, the giants which are one massive (no pun intented) chore and a glorified hackfest, the golems which are genuinely repetetive and include machinery because it's just gotta be there, the alien beasts are worse than the golems since their tactic is "charge and bite you", and then there are the Vahnatai, who are the black men of the Spidweb universe. "What? Your wife was murdered? In her sleep? And there was no break-in?" "Yeah. I saw a Vahnatai next to our bed with a bloody waveblade, muttering something about crystal souls before he teleported away."

Quote: Originally written by Drakefyre: I think that increasingly similar encounters with rogues in Geneforge is definitely heading towards monotony, but in the Exile and Avernum games, there is such a large variety of everything that things never get boring. Need I sum up Exile/Avernum 1? "Oh, look! There's a cave/tower/fort of bandits!" *hack, slash* "Oh, look! There's a cave/tower/fort of goblins!" *hack, slash* "Oh, look! There's a cave/tower/fort of nephils!" *hack, slash* "Oh, look! There's a cave/tower/fort of bats!" *hack, slash* "Oh, look! There's a cave/tower/fort of aranea!" *hack, slash* "Oh, look! Exile 2 offers something interesting until you hit Vahnatai homeland- then it's just more of the same, except you add more soldiers, hydras and some chitraches to the mix. Exile 3 has plagues. Do you even know why this sort of thing is shouted down in BoX scenarios? And saying that Geneforge is "nearing" monotony is like saying that our president is "nearing" conservatism. Geneforge is as monotonous as being damned to the level of hell where you are alone in a room and push a red button for the rest of eternity. Jeff needs more spice in his games. He managed to design well until after Anwnn in Nethergate- it's not like he can't possibly do this and still make a game that sells.
  17. Quote: Originally written by Manhood Typing Kelandon: Perhaps you still need to be acquainted with Jeff's stated design philosophy: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." You've got that all wrong. His design philosophy is more like: "If it's broke, then it ain't broke."
  18. If you set a character to die for any types above 4, the character suffers a "fled" type death. A death type of 0 is the same as erase_char to a PC, which actually works as a call! Unfortunately, there is no way to revive a lost character. Kill type 1, as many of you know, makes the character fall down and drop some blood, but the character is still alive, suffers no HP loss, and keeps all items sometimes. (Other times, the item is successfully dropped. Other times yet, the items go to another PC.)
  19. I have, in fact, played through Mr. Maddock's works, but I do not have them off-hand. (They were also, surprisingly enough, flat-out rejected from the SW tables on account of getting sub-2.0 scores.)
  20. FYI, the Adventurer's Club scenarios don't have a "series" page. The Demon Island, Doom Moon and Grich!!! scenarios are, inarguably, "related". Perhaps, in order not to confuse noobies, you could add astericks to note which scenarios are terrible or untried? And what about design utilities? Anywho! There are 286 scenarios for Blades of Exile, and I have designed 18 (6.3%). That's less than I remember, but so be it.

  22. Bandits II. (And, to a lesser extent, Mad Ambition.) Their culture? Well, the only ones you'll find on Ermarian are the evil, banditry-practicing types, since they were booted off of the planet by a ginormous demigod-dragon millenia ago. They now have a utopian system in a cave-dimension somewhat like Exile but more hostile. They have an intensely long history I won't bother writing down.
  23. Why not just find the etymology of a devious-sounding word and make a name out of it? For instance, Ubilus. Can't be corrupted, and it doesn't sound TOO bad.
