  1. BoN doesn't even make any sense. I can see wanting BoG for the real time out of combat movement and creation stuff, even though it isn't going to happen, but what need would we have for a BoN? My memory of it may be rusty, but I'm fairly certain N:R has pretty much the same engine as BoA, and anything missing that you strictly need for a scenario can be done with some creative coding with custom abilities or items and whatnot. Yes, even the differentiation between Roman/Celts ablities or whatever else Nethergate had.

    I'm not sure where the practical idea is, here. It'd be difficult just getting something like BoA's source code from Jeff, let alone getting him to throw random geneforge editing stuff at us, if that's what you're suggesting.

  2. No.

    Truly awful things have happened and continue to happen. Not saying it doesn't happen. People reach a point to where they can't return from doing truly awful things and they can't be (realistically) helped. Not saying it doesn't happen. What I'm saying is that the concept of evil is thrown around, but I've never seen a solid definition on it. Sometimes it's tagged onto anything awful, sometimes it's described as an ultimatum, that something or something is purely evil or not (which I don't think is correct, since there's a lot of factors going into what someone does). From what I've observed, debating the concept of evil would be like debating perfection—it's hard to do since no one defines it the same way.

    (Though then, I made the comment since I thought the thread was going in a completely different direction than it is now. D&D is a bit different since it's more defined, plus it's fantasy.)

  3. Exile 1-3 and BoE are the original games that are now known as the Avernum series. Avernum 1-3 and BoA are remakes, while Avernum 4-6 continue the story. Avernum: Escape from the pit is another remake of the first.

    Exile is quite aged by now. If you don't mind the old style of it, I'd say go for it, or you can just jump on to Avernum 1-3. They're also a bit aged, but not quite as so. The new remake is about on par with Avernum 4-6 in terms of shinyness, but re-remakes 2 and 3 have yet to be made, and probably won't be for quite a few years.

    It's a matter of preference, really. You could also ignore 1-3 in all incarnations and go for 4-6, but I like chronological order, personally.

  4. I find it completely possible to do a playthrough of Geneforge 4 primarily using a sword and dealing out over 120 damage in a single hit with enough quick action. Mind you, I'm never a pure swordfighter, but I always default to my sword in those cases when I am playing that way.

    You don't even have to deal a single bit of damage yourself (including your own creations) in G4 to beat the game, actually.

  5. I'd love to, but I don't know if it'll be playable on either of my computers. It's hard enough to get the native version of TF2 to run...

    You'll probably be able to play it. And even if you can't, it's not like Sy is losing anything by sending you a key. They have seriously been sent out like candy on halloween.

  6. It really doesn't matter which world I, and a number of other people, would go. With no time to prepare, you would be out in a very hostile world, out on your own, with no identity, insufficient knowledge of the surrounding area, foreign plantlife and bacteria, and even if there were people around for when you inexplicably show up, there would be a language barrier, the fact that you are a nobody, and that most of us are far too used to vastly superior technology, all in nothing but the clothes you brought in and whatever else happened to be on you.

    In other words, have fun dying, unless you want to cheat and say that there's no language barrier and that you wouldn't get horribly sick if you lived past the first couple days. The truth is, while some of us have the know-how to survive being plopped inexplicably in some random part of this world, none of us would actually know how to survive in the worlds of Avernum, Geneforge, or Avadon. It would require quite the stroke of luck.

    Now, pretending like everyone else that I could survive, I would say that I'd go to Geneforge, become a shaper, shape a kitty army, and establish the Realm of Kittens.

  7. Escape from the Pit takes place at the start of all this.

    Uh, not really. A fair amount had been established by the time Hawthrone's Assassins came about. They were very undeveloped and had a ways to go, true, considering their use of stone weapons, but all the towns were there, amount other details.

    Also, the war between Avernum and the Empire was never even before the vahnatai came about. No matter how well they had fought, the Empire was only slowed due to lack of geographical knowledge and that a tiny trickle, barely a stream, of a river of soldiers was going in, with a large portal planned. The Avernites were practically doomed from the start had it not been for their extreme stroke of luck that the Empire happened to be stupid enough to piss off a powerful race they knew nothing about.

  8. I might be in the minority in that I don't listen to music very often. It's distracting for classwork, and for games, I prefer to not overwrite the sounds and music from them--no matter what game, with rare exceptions, but even then it's not done with music. There's very few moments where I'll actually sit down and listen to music specifically, so most of it then comes from game music in the background as I play.

    That being said, when I do listen to music by itself, my tastes vary between genres, although the pool is shallow and constantly shifting--I don't partake much, so there's little reason not to be picky. In that pool has contained music from most genres--just not rap and country. Rock and some metal is a personal favorite, or was. I'm not quite sure anymore.

  9. You would have to level up a creation a lot to reach the power of a higher tiere. Clawbugs are, as I recall, great for their level, and last a long time, but ultimately when you get access to the rotgroth, rotdhizon, and war trall, you'll want to disolve the lower ones. So, to answer your question, use and abuse to your uses.

  10. There is also tasteful spam and not so tasteful spam. They both still have way more salt than you need, but the former doesn't leave a sour taste in your mouth.

  11. I've started alpha-testing the scenario now, and this is the configuration I used to check the crime level

    beginstate START_STATE;

    if (get_crime_level(ME) > 0 && < 5)

    set_state_continue(53);

    if (get_crime_level(ME) >= 5)

    set_state_continue(54);

    State 53 will decrease the party's reputation via SDF by 1.

    State 54 will kill the party.

    However, right now the scenario is calling state 53 on every turn in the town, and attacking the town doesn't call 54. What am I doing wrong?

    START_STATE get's called every turn, so every turn it checks with the if statement. That's why it's calling 53 every turn. If you want 53 to only be called once the first time the party does something to raise the crime level and no more, then you'll need to add a flag condition. And my memory may be a bit fuzzy on this, but I think killing someone simply raises the crime level by 3. Though more importantly, there's a mistake in the syntax:

    if (get_crime_level(ME) > 0 && < 5)

    I believe should be

    if (get_crime_level(ME) > 0 && get_crime_level(ME) < 5)

  12. I see I'm not alone in not caring much for bacon, except that it is excellent on burgers. Plain or on anything else, and bacon doesn't work.

    I like meat, and would prefer not giving it up.

    Giving up bread would be giving out a hell of a lot, including those delicious cresants.

    I assume sugar refers to processed sugar, and not natural like those in fruits. If it weren't for the fact that I use it to counter the bitterness in coffee, I'd be perfectly fine giving it up. Even then I'd still be alright, as bitter coffee is still nice, but coffee that is neither sweet nor bitter is just perfect.

    Fruit is nice, though I don't find myself eating much of it. Watermelon is a personal favorite, though, and not just for nostalgic reasons.

    I can't see myself getting rid of vegetables. Excellent in stir fry among other things, and are healthy as well.

    I think giving up fruit would hurt the least, all things considered.
