  1. Maybe. Or maybe that trend in the orthography was a result of French influence. Wikipedia says "Before a consonant letter the pronunciation is always /k/; word-finally after i it is always /(IPA symbol for "ch", which my computer doesn't like)/. Otherwise a knowledge of the historical linguistics of the word in question is needed to predict which pronunciation is needed." No wonder I could never keep those rules straight. >>;
  2. I've only ever heard it pronounced like "liken". Quote: Originally written by Kelandon: Yes, the etymology is the difference. "Loch" is a borrowing from a Celtic language in which the fricative (like the German CH) existed. "Lich" is from an Old English word "lic" — originally pronounced like "lick" — that was eventually palatalized to "lich." Really? I always thought that "c" was pronounced "ch" in OE, at least in certain positions. At least in that one. (Unless you're talking about something older than OE, and it was palatalized in OE, in which case I wouldn't know. I don't know if I would know anyway. XD)

That's what was confusing me– it depended on what the etymology was. If it were from Greek or something, then the ch would be pronounced /k/, for example… but now that I know it's from Anglo-Saxon, it makes perfect sense.
  4. No, actually it's Exile 1. >>;;; Someone said Patrick knew about Grah-Hoth's fort (?… some fort anyway), and he has the password to get a key to it. He says it's in a hidden bookshelf. (Edit: Ok, found it. Man, this registered half is "secret door in a corner" happy…)
  5. Patrick said something about a password in a "hidden bookshelf". I can't find it… all I found was a switch in a desk that made one of the bookshelves go away, and there wasn't anything behind it. Any hints? (I'm sure I'm going to be kicking myself later. ^^;;; )

  7. I'm in the same situation with Exile 2 and 3, and decided to start a new file so that everything that's going on (and what, precisely, I'm supposed to do– all the games except Exile 1 kind of run together for me ) is fresh in my mind, since I didn't do anything on those games since I finished the demos.

  9. >>;; Yeah, I eventually found them, but then when I got back she was just gone. I guess if she was supposed to help me through Erika's tower, I did it without her. ^^;
  10. How do you pronounce "lich"? I can think of several different ways (/leek/, /lick/, /litch/, /leech/, /like/…) but which is right? I mean, I'd feel a bit silly saying "I just fought a 'leech' for the tip of Demonslayer" if that wasn't right…

Who would do that? *sob* My one problem with the Exile spells, compared to Avernum, is Fireball. Its counterpart, Ice Lances, is way better (it has multiple targets, which is why they're both good, but Ice Lances is also useful when you're fighting an army of fire lizards; also, you can pick the targets to avoid hitting your party members).

  13. So there's that witch who hangs out in the Great Cave and wants you to bring her five pieces of mold… are they all in that general area? I could only find two (one by the water and one right next to her). How far away do you have to look? (And this mold wouldn't be greymold, by any chance, would it? If it is, then that's good, because then she might make the salve for me and I can heal Patrick's wife and make him stop being so depressing! =D)
  14. I typed "f" while I had caps lock on just to see what this was all about, and a little window popped up that asked for a number, specifically that I "set a flag".

  16. There was a Deli Sandwich in Exile 1 already (it's an item in the part of the editor that gives you items), a Potion/Scroll/Wand with effect "Yum!" (or was it "???"?). But since I've never registered, I've never been able find out what it did. ;_;
  17. Well, they're in Exile 1, so most likely so. However, they don't play that big a role: the official Spiderweb Exile FAQ says, "Q: How do I get past the double barrier in the Vahnatai cave? A: Play Exile 2." or something like that.
  18. Totally. What's the point of the Anama Church running around saying "Mage spells are so destructive! Let's stop using them!" if priest spells actually do more damage? Now, Exile 1… the main point of priests was to bless, heal, and cure stuff, while the mages unleashed fireballs and such. Ahhh… all was as it should be. Poor mages, indeed. Spiffy graph.
  19. Spring– maybe, but it would be so much fun to finish. And to actually explore the whole world and find all the stuff that's out there. (P.S. "Abreviation" is an abbreviation for "abbreviation"? Personally, I don't think it's SUCH a waste of time to double-tap the "b" key. =P)
  20. Yeah, I guess if you were a demon, you wouldn't want that. But it would probably hurt regardless, being all ancient and powerful and all.

  23. Ah. Just handy to have around for certain fights, then, and for completion. Thanks, everyone. =D
