  1. Quote: But why sunlight burns vampires? Sunlight is natural element. It has nothing to do with gods. I think it's justified by undead being 'night creatures'. Ancient viking mythology had trolls turn to stone in sunlight. Maybe that's where it's derived from. There's also some belief that undead can't cross flowing water. I wonder where that originates.
  2. So how hard would it be for Jeff to include that call in Avernumscript as well? The game itself is based on C, isn't it?

It isn't mentioned in the documentation, so does the scripting engine recognize it if you include that command in a town script?
  4. I think it's like in early roleplay posts by Zephyr. You desperately need a sword to defeat the dragon? No problem, there it is, directly in front of you. You desperately need another woman to marry the guy to so the story makes sense? No problem, there she is. There's a reason why power-gaming in roleplays is also called 'god-playing', you know...
  5. 1.) There isn't. The quickest method is to use the character editor to set the day, or to repeatedly rest in some room (for example in Fort Emergence). 2.) I don't think so. The only way to avoid it is to not take her boon. I did that - it's one hell of a tough battle, but eventually you'll get there. I think she only has energy for 4-5 teleports or so, then you can walk up to the dais and activate the mechanism (assuming you're still in one piece after all that). 3.) That's why I didn't like A3 as much either... I want to have time for exploring. I couldn't have it before the end because of the time pressure, and afterwards it just ends. Mean.
  6. Ugh, I just noticed... one outdoor section is one heck of a small space if you don't surround it with cliff wals to prevent the party from seeing over the edge. You get a little over a quarter inside the section...

  8. What are the 'four aspects'? Did I miss something in this conversation, or is this some sort of external guideline someone laid down for short scenarios in general?
  9. Questions: a) What do you refer to with "structures"? What's a gremlin "still"? c) "One original structure wizards lab, gremlin still, bandit fortress, border outpost, volcano, etc." What all of these? d) Only one town, which is already taken up by the dungeon? Wouldn't that be two towns, or with a 2-level dungeon three towns? Scripting doesn't seem to be a requirement, so I'll get right on it.
  10. Myst? I rarely see that name mentioned anymore... absolutely wonderful game.
  11. I got Exile III first, from a shareware collection CD that's included once a year with a computer magazine. I checked out the site pretty soon after that, but my sanity was too strong for me to comprehend anything that was going on at the boards at that time. Think there was an "Around the Block in However Long it Takes" RP at the time. And there might have been an incarnation of Sliths vs. Nephilim, but I'm not sure.
  12. Mh. Tell me, is there any free program for emulating Mac on a PC?
  13. Quote: "Mom, he's casting speeeeelllls!" Now what book does that remind me of?
  14. Our grammar is said to be the hardest in Europe apart from Finland, and I suppose I agree. Heh, if Jeff ever wanted to have the Exile and Avernum series translated to German, I guess I could do it, but I'm not sure if it'd pay off for him - most German-speakers who download the game did so, after all, from an English site, so most who come here speak English anyway. Edit: Apart from that Japanese fellow who came here a year ago and used an auto-translator for posting. Babelfish and Google translators are a crime against language. On that note... "It is and it is end what but it is."
  15. Well, I always like to keep unique items. Sort of like a souvenir. In BoE, I kept one of the old School Textbooks (or whatever they were called) from VoDT, the axe Asp from Bandits, a firewalk scroll from RotS, and stuff like that. I certainly wouldn't want to sell those.
  16. Magic, Demons and Goblins... I sense a victim of fundamentalism... Didn't Omlette say he has trouble with his parents about these games for the same reason? Oh, and by the way, would Priest spells count as magic? On second thought, they probably would. Heathen sects and all that. ----- HEY! We could make another competition from this. Sort of like 'Don't Fix the Shark', only with restrictions regarding content! Like vegetarian meals for certain religious groups. A scenario without intelligent non-humans. Or without swords or any weapons. Without any religious cults. One that caters to the rules of Born-again Christions. Or Mormons. Or conservative Jews. Or Atheists. Or... the possibilities are endless.
  17. Yup, sorry, the joke got old. I'll change it back when I get home and can access my saved signature.
  18. I name my Thahds after my history teacher. Though 'Dubya' has been a personal favorite for a time now. My fyoras are usually named Mozilla, for reasons I myself don't know (I use Opera ).
  19. I don't think it is, actually. Now if he did 'Drakefyre_', and imitated the signature, it would be another thing...
  20. Dragons are cool! Of course they need to be arrogant, to match up against the egos of adventurers nowadays. If dragons were 20 meters long, ferocious, fire-breathing, deadly, unbelievably powerful, humble little lizards, who would respect them? They need to have an ego to go with all that power...
  21. Doesn't deleting the .dat file unregister the game (assuming the game is registered)? Or am I being stupid?
  22. Aran

    BoA...aagh, slow!

What about sounds? Could the sound for the steps just take half a second to load and play each time...?
  23. I don't think the technical term 'luck', as defined by the BoA editor, was intended here. But hey.
  24. Insane characters can work wonders as comic relief even in serious scenarios (I wonder, can sudden 'bouts' of humor damage an otherwise serious scenario?) Picture this dialogue: Look: At the very end of the precipice of this volcano stands a figure. He is wreathed in the smoke of the fire, but he doesn't seem very clear on where or who he is. Occasionally, he forces out an unnerving giggle. Name: "Well wouldn't you just like to know? Ha! I, the mighty Barnabas, will tell nobody my name!" 'BARN', 'MIGH': "Oh crap." He slaps his forehead, a little too strongly maybe, and staggers back under the jolt. "Well, no matter, you will never know my TRUE name." 'TRUE', 'NAME': "Barnabas, the fools called me. Barnabas the Bungler. Ha! I have forged myself a new name, one fitting my new station as the almighty GOD of this WORLD! Yeeehahaahaaa." 'FORG', 'FITT': "My true name is, henceforth", He stops to take a deep breath, "Arhchdllxylxzahcrgggghh---" he has to clear his throat. He tries again: "Zaraflxylxrhrhhh---" he gets a bad coughing fit. He tries once more, but only gets out a choking noise. He gives up. Ah well, got to work on that pronounciation. It looks great on paper! I'm having more success with my evil cackle..." 'EVIL', 'CACK': "Hahaha." It doesn't sound impressive. "Heeheeheheheeeee." The giggle is slightly unnerving; it reminds you of the nightmares you keep having of cute spiders. "Well, let's try again: YEEEHAAHAHarglks!" The prolonged shout ends in a hickup. 'FIRE', 'VOLC' "I am just trying to test out my new godlike powers! I, the mighty Barnabas, can now swim in lava without so much as a sweat! Ha! Just wait and see!" With that, he steps back a little, then dives straight into the volcano! Before he is gone, you hear a strange shout of glee. It reminds you oddly of 'Precious'. Strange. (Forced conversation end, destroy monster).
