Fledgling Fyora ckm
I've been working on a remake of Blades of Exile for a while and I think it's about time to show the world. It's basically a ground-up rewrite of the entire game in C#, with big changes to the graphics and user interface and a brand new scripting system. I've also written a converter program that should take a Blades of Exile scenario and spit out one that's compatible with Swords of Exile off the bat. It's still a work in progress, and probably very buggy, but I welcome anyone to try it out and see what they think. I've set up a basic website for it. The download and more information can be found at swordsofexile.net78.net Tyranicus, Nephil Thief and Lilith
Garrulous Glaahk Nephil Thief
OMG. This is amazing. I don't think I can properly convey how impressive a feat this is. Re Linux, WinForms should work under Mono; though I'm not sure what (if any) changes that might entail. OSX I have no idea about. Edit: oh wait this uses XNA, which I am totally unfamiliar with. I'm guessing it might run under Wine. Probably better to just whip up a virtual machine though.
Fledgling Fyora ckm
Yeah, I really want to get a Mac and Linux version working. I've heard of a thing called MonoGame, which is a cross-platform remake of XNA so that might be the way to go.
Understated Ur-Drakon Celtic Minstrel
While this is certainly nice and amazing, I wonder if this discards the main strength of BoE over BoA when you replace special nodes with Python scripts. Did you rewrite the authoring tools too? BoE's main strength over BoA seems to have been the ease of creating new scenarios, part of which was due to the special node system. Is it my imagination or did you rescale the tile graphics to be 32x32 instead of 28x36? What's the point of that? I kind of hope this will not fully replace the updated Blades of Exile that I have been working on. It's certainly taking it in a completely different direction. Fledgling Fyora ckm
I certainly never intended it to replace the great work you've been doing, Celtic, so I apologise if it's stepping on your toes in any way. My version contains lots of changes that reflect my (possibly quite insular) personal preferences and whims so I can understand having a version that sticks more faithfully to the original BoE, and I hope you carry on with that. The change to square tiles (not the characters, just the scenery) is just because it always bugged me a bit in the Exile games having rectangular tiles. No other reason, and others won't share my view. They're actually 48x48 tiles but the graphics are just crudely resized at the moment - I'm hoping eventually it might have a whole new higher-res graphic set. I get your point about the scripts but I think the Python scripts in this are a lot more straightforward than BoA and there are some advantages over the special nodes such as not having to manually record all the stuff done flags and whatnot. I've not made an editor yet, there's only a program for converting BoE scenarios to the new format. Early days. So, yes, it is a completely different direction and I hope BoE and SoE can co-exist in harmony. I'd certainly hate for it to take anything away from other people's hard work with BoE. Garrulous Glaahk Nephil Thief
FYI, as far as I'm concerned the special node system has always been a major barrier. It's easy to pick up, but actually doing anything complex with it is nigh impossible - at least for people like me who have poor spatial and/or organizational skills. Magnificent Ornk Kelandon
The download and more information can be found at swordsofexile.net78.net For reasons I cannot fathom, I can't get this link to load. I've tried on two devices, two networks, two browsers... nothing works. Thoughts?
Hatchling Cockatrice Lilith
For reasons I cannot fathom, I can't get this link to load. I've tried on two devices, two networks, two browsers... nothing works. Thoughts? Works fine for me. What goes wrong when you try it? Is there an error message or does it just sit around loading forever or what?
Magnificent Ornk Kelandon
The latter. Times out.
Fledgling Fyora ckm
Not sure why that would be Kelandon, is it something to do with the crappy free web hosting I've used? I could try to sort out a separate download link for you if you want.
Magnificent Ornk Kelandon
Not sure why that would be Kelandon, is it something to do with the crappy free web hosting I've used? Not a clue. I'm on a Mac anyway, so the download isn't really an issue, but I was curious about whatever additional information you might have on the site. Well-Actually War Trall BainIhrno
Will it run on CrossOver? I can't seem to get it to work.
Garrulous Glaahk Nephil Thief
@BainIhrno Nope, unfortunately not; at least not without a lot of setup. It needs .NET 4.0 and a library called XNA. Edit: .NET 4 should run under Wine but might have problems. Not really sure. XNA I have no idea.
Fledgling Fyora Lagi
ckm, what's up with Swords of Exile? Work's over? User interface in your port is brilliant (scaling, screen size, more eye friendly colors). Thanks to your work I enjoy the Exile again (I like the original game series, more than the new one). I have send you 4 mails of feedback months ago, but get no answer. If you abandon it, please at least release source code (i would like to look into it). Tenderfoot Thahd Fenix Wulfheart
I also would like to know what happened to this game. I have a minor bug in it to report. When attempting to save a customized party before entering a scenario with it, the game crashes instead of saving.
