What gender is Sulfras?

Forgive me if this question has been resolved before. I'm not sure about the sequels, but in the first Avernum game there seems to be some doubt as to whether Sulfras is male or female. I haven't found all the references, but two I have in my journal are from Khoth and the Slith Merchant:

I'm pretty sure Sulfras is a SHE but I'm not positive.

I think the dragons are hermaphroditic. That's the only way to explain the gender-bending that they do.

 

Sulfras normally is a female. For instance, when you approach her and talk to her in A1, she is referred to as "she."

Sulfras was male in Exile 1, as I recall, but was referred to as female in E2 and 3. The confusion in the Avernum series probably result froms Jeff porting some of his text directly from Exile and writing some of it from scratch.

Yes, I also recall her being male in an early game, only to change in a later game. I think the consensus is that she is female.

Yes, regardless what the few erroneus texts say, she is a female.

It's a giant, fire-breathing lizard. It has no children and no apparent desire for them. As far as I'm concerned, it can change its gender all it wants as long as it gives me the Onyx Scepter on request.

Hey, don't some amphibians do that? Maybe dragons are closer to amphibians than we previously thought. Or something.

All five dragons are referred to primarily as "he" in Exile 1 -- not sure to what extent Avernum 1 fixes this. In Exile 2, Athron and Sulfras are mostly female and the others are mostly male (except Pyrog, who's dead and thus doesn't get mentioned much one way or the other.

 

As for the amphibian thing, yes, I think we've all seen Jurassic Park.

 

(Actually, changing sex isn't all that uncommon. Lots of fish can do it too.)

Oysters change genders several times in their lifetime, and a crab was recently found that was both male and female at the same time.

i've always thought of sulfras as female. i get the idea that she closely resembles a female red dragon from d&d
