Fledgling Fyora The Specialist
Not to criticize Avernum: Escape from the Pit but as the avernum before it contained the usage of crossbows, i was a little dissapointed not to see them reinvented in the newer graphics set, i needed to get that off my chest. Hatchling Cockatrice Lilith
You're allowed to criticise the games here. We don't ban people just for that, I promise. But seriously, crossbows have been absent from SW's games from Avernum 4 onwards. I guess Jeff decided they were redundant, since the main difference between bows and crossbows in earlier games was what kind of ammo they used, and bows no longer use ammo. Understated Ur-Drakon Earth
crossbow deals more damage but pure archer hasn't been most usable character since ..........
Fledgling Fyora juckto
Usable? I made a no-mage party and im finding the archer to be the most useful character. Highest damage output and most likely to survive. That's remix, though. Around level ten on torment.
Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
Archers are not that usable on torment in Jeff's version. Slarty did a lot of work to upgrade them in his Remix.
Hatchling Cockatrice Lilith
They're totally usable, but they'll do noticeably less damage than a dual-wielder.
Seasoned Roamer Aleric
I started out attempting an archer but ended up giving up about lvl 10 or so and started ti train her in dual wield. She quickly became the MVP of the party, especially against bosses. I gave her the oozing sword and flaming sword so she could do heavy damage to *almost* anyone she came across. Magnificent Ornk nikki.
I *always* include an archer character in these games (even without Slarty's Remix), and they're always usable right through til the end of the game. Sure, their damage output never really competes later on, but it's really helpful early on, when your melee specialist might be missing more than she hits. Plus, in A:EftP (and Avadon), the ridiculous amount of dexterity your archer should have will make them ideal for plonking in front of tough enemy melee fighters to draw attacks. EVERYBODY does noticeably less damage than a dual wielder, with the exception of magic, and even then only in terms of total damage across several targets. Understated Ur-Drakon Earth
I said most usable not useless but still I prefer hard cold steel.
