Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
For those who missed it. A Florida man trying to quit smoking using an electric cigarette had the battery explode causing him to lose some teeth, part of his tongue, and burn his face. It's believed that the lithium rechargeable battery exploded. No reports from the tobacco industry citing the safety of their products compared to electronic ones. Understated Ur-Drakon Callie
That title is rather misleading.
Easygoing Eyebeast Enraged Slith
I don't see what's so surprising; Lithium is extremely toxic.
Understated Ur-Drakon Callie
And more importantly: extremely flammable. This can happen with laptop or cell phone batteries even. Lithium fires cannot be extinguished by normal means.
Hatchling Cockatrice Alorael at Large
As ways to quit smoking, electronic cigarettes might be great. As ways to stop using cancer-causing, addictive, tobacco-based products, they're an obvious non-starter. —Alorael, who finds the article more interesting for it's blasé violation of privacy. It's not at all clear that the unfortunate smoker was being particularly intending to stay private, but he was outed in short order by Facebook. Easygoing Eyebeast The Mystic
I always knew smoking was bad for you, but...wow. I guess it's a good thing I never used an electric cigarette--or a real one, for that matter. Or used tobacco in any form.
Ineffable Wingbolt aka Ravenwing
Kind of ironic, actually. He intended to stop smoking, and only then did he really start. (I'm sorry. Bad taste. No pun intended.)

Modern journalists seem to be under the impression that invasion of privacy is their job, whether it's relevant to the story our not. But we already had a thread on the media. Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
It's almost as bad as finding out Google has been bypassing Apple's security feature in Safari to trick the browser into thinking the user had authorized a cookie. Since Apple had set default to be no, this was a way to get past it without users knowing that they were being tracked.

Of course this would be covered by the Huffington Post.
Ineffable Wingbolt Necris Omega
Oh, it's covered by a lot of news outlets, but I just can't resist a low hanging fruit like that. ... Sorry.
Well-Actually War Trall Harehunter
Heavy sigh. And to think I cut back from a pot of coffee per day to a single cup.
