How do you say it?

Recommended Posts

I often wonder how certain names are pronouced in Nethergate. I have my own ways of saying things, but that of course does not make them correct. So what would be the correct way?

1. Annwn (Never been able to come up with one)

2. Aethdoc ( eth-a-dock )

3. Goagh-Nar ( gog-na-vor )

They may seem strange, but that is how I say them because I could never figure out their proper forms.

I say AN-win, for Annwn although I've heard from a friend who knows a thing or two (but no more than two) about Gaelic that it should be Anoon. It's also commonly written with an F and/or a Y in there either instead of or along with the W. Make of it what you will.

[Edit: The word is Welsh, though. Now I must even further question the authority of my friend on the subject.]

Aethdoc is AITH-dock to me, or sometimes ATH-dock when I'm in an Old English mood. According to Irish Gaelic, "ae" should be a long A sound, I think.

[Edit: I have no idea what language Jeff was channeling on that one, though. I'm fairly certain not everything comes from Welsh. Shadowvale is a mishmash of cultures, which makes some sense if the magical folks from all over the world are arriving.]

I pronounce Goagh-Nar as GO-ag NAR on absolutely no authority.

—Alorael, who is positive that there is a right way, or maybe several right ways, of pronouncing Annwn. The rest may have come straight from the mind of Jeff Vogel, so you can pronounce them however you want and declare yourself to be the one true authority.

im pretty sure that jeff pulled Goagh-Nar right from an eppisode of Star Trek, as im positive its Klingon.

Annwn - ive always thoghut to be Ann-wyren, thsi is actually Celtic, and used correctly, and i have read the proper prounceation in a book in my local library.

Aethdoc - i prounconce it Ath-A-dock. im prolly doign ti wrong, but how m,any ppl actually talk about NGate out loud? think onti, d we really need correct prounceations?

edit: RealPlease prounoucnes Goagh-Nar as Goag-nar
