Penalty for switching factions?[G5]

There is some kind of mention of a penalty for switching faction - is there one? Is there a limit to how much you can switch back-and-forth?

You can't return to a faction you've left. Some factions, like Ghaldring, will turn hostile if you leave them. Some later faction quests will also make it impossible to join other factions, because you have to do something that either makes a faction angry or prevents one of its own quests from being completed. It's theoretically possible to join every faction in one game, but you have to do it in the right order and be good at managing your reputation.

I've done it once, I think it was something like Astoria, Trakovites, Alwan, Taygen, Ghaldring. You have to keep a close watch on your reputation and have a calculator and the walkthrough at hand to calculate how it changes. You want to keep it around 90 for the rebel parts and 110 for the shaper parts. (Late game there are two npcs that really help balancing it. You can pretty much stay neutral the whole game until you're left with about ten choices)

 

You start with 100 which is neutral. Rebel choices minus, loyalist adds. Be sure to have come the furthest in each faction before switching without harming another. And don't complete every quest Rawal gives you. Remember to kill Litalia after you've left her to join Alwan/Taygen.

What Rawal quests can't you do? You can't kill Platano until after you're done with Taygen's faction, yes, but can't you kill him once you've joined Ghaldring?

 

Dikiyoba has never tried switching factions, though, so Dikiyoba wouldn't know.

I'm not sure about Ghaldring's, 'cause I quit his by the time I killed Platano, but I'm pretty sure you can kill him while with any other faction (even while with Taygen? That's one thing to try), so long as you have the quest from Rawal.

No, Dikiyoba meant that Dikiyoba doesn't think you can join Taygen if you kill Platano, so you can't complete that quest for Rawal if you want to do that. But after you leave Taygen's faction, it should no longer be an issue.

I thought if you kill Platano and turn in the quest, you get the Rawal not-so-awesome ending? If not then you're free to do it after Taygen.

You only get that if you agree to his offer. You can still finish his quests just fine.

You can kill Plantano and still not get the Rawal ending. The last rewards are pretty sweet.

 

I actually tried something like this in on of my runthroughs. I managed to switch between three factions (Astoria-Ghaldring-Alwan) before I was satisfied.

you can kill platano if you want to join taygens faction, just do it after you do the "Aid platano" quest that you get from taygen
